  1. When I last booked tickets to fly with one of the budget airlines, I chose to read every last word of the (many pages of) terms & conditions. One section covered what could & could not be carried & I was surprised to read that "petrol, in reasonable quantities" could be carried. But not my deodorant spray; that was confiscated!
  2. I save up some jobs which are either best done in the winter or convenient to save to then;...tree & hedge planting, garden clearance, trimming base & side growth from limes, renovating bench seats for parish council etc. Increasingly though, I've got into logs & kindling as a means of keeping busy & bringing in funds during the worst of the weather.
  3. If you'll have me, I'd like to tag along & ask silly questions of you 'experts'.
  4. For free, I picked up an old tin trunk, the sort our forebears would have used to pack their gear before setting off for the colonies. Perfectly acceptable to our council inspector as a bunded container. Holds 2 x 20L & 6 x 5L cans.
  5. Seven nests in garden hedges this season. They've all been what I believe to be the 'German' wasp; bit smaller than 'our' wasp & very aggressive. I blame the EU for letting 'em across here. My little cocker 'Jess' was attacked by a swarm, probably more than a hundred on her. She moaned a bit less about the stings than I do!
  6. One of my annual jobs is to trim the base & side growth from an avenue of limes at the local cemetery. 24 trees, all planted at the same time, from the same stock. Some, lots of base growth, others none! Silky & Felco's for me. When I used a chainsaw a couple of years ago I was taken to task by the tree man who had 'topped' them in earlier years.
  7. Stereo, there's more truth in your verses than all the old firewood poems.
  8. Excuse me being picky but, as it's annoying me, I have to mention...........INPUT
  9. You lot living in the Arctic? Down here it's warm enough to still need a cooling fan going in the bedroom, just so we can get to sleep. Can't imagine having to put heat into the house until mid October ish.
  10. No Mick, definately not an insult. But, on re-reading I can see how it could be taken..Sorry.
  11. Spores, of all sorts, are in the air around us all. Could it just be that moist chip provides an ideal host? I spread a load of small thuja hedge trimmings in my yard a couple of months ago & last week a veritable mini forest of 'shrooms came through.
  12. After being 'fined' for damaging an electricity supply cable, just 5 inches below ground!! I did a lot of research which I can't presently lay my hands on but, I'm pretty sure that all service providers are obliged to tell you where their service pipes/cables run if you are planning work that could, potentially damage them. Needs a few days lead time though.

    Larch

Larch, easy to work with & in terms of calorific value, every bit as good as sycamore & elm. I'm hoping to be logging a lot more larch.
  14. Lady rang for a 'load' of logs, new customer. She lives just a couple hundred yards from the BIG local supplier but 3 miles from me. "your logs are cheaper" she said. Me, trying to talk myself out of a sale says "but his truck is bigger, you'll get more logs for your money" "huh?" she says. I explained about his 2m3 capacity & my 1.4m3. From him she'd get 35% more logs for just an extra £20. Long pause, then: "but you're still cheaper so I'd like yours please".
  15. Be able to convince the missus it's an alternative to the tumble dryer.

    What a con!

Show 'em the blank space in the audio handbook where the dealer should have entered the radio code. Worked for me...no charge.
  17. ......."probably the most amazing penis of the animal world" Were they talking about Mick then?
  18. And when it's needed, you can get the Felco's serviced at Burton McCall Ltd, minimal cost. They'll come back like new.
  19. I too only sell dry wood, mixed loads of whatever I've got. This coming winter will be predominantly what Linnaeus classified as 'hardwoods' but in winter 2012/13 will include a lot of larch, if the artics eventually arrive!
  20. Quite apart from the need to sometimes use botanical names, isn't it an absolute joy to roll some off the tongue? The first I learned & still my favourite is acer palmatum atropurpureum. My other favourite is metasequoia glyptostroboides. Two words capturing the history of this lovely tree, the common name for which has just three syllables.
  21. I generally apply Glyphosate ( the active ingredient in Roundup & manufactured under licence by over 40 companies) at the mixed rate of 100ml to 5L water, so 320ml in a 16L knapsack. Applying stronger has a negative effect in that it can scorch the leaves before the chemical is properly absorbed by the plant. When my neighbour (who believes in more than doubling the dose) treats the weeds on his drive, they turn yellow within 24 hours & then, because the roots aren't dead, re-grow in a couple of weeks. Re-application should not take place until fresh growth is seen. Most sites I look after are sprayed about 3 times a year, more if it's wet & warm, less if it's very dry like this year.
  22. He's got other wood for sale. See Woodlots You'll spot his ad's by the phone no.
  23. Question. How does the driver & the timber seller know what weight is on the loaded timber wagon? Does he have to drive to a weighbridge or is there a device on timber wagons which indicates the load weight?

    husqvarna 61

My first saw, & still going very well, was/is a '92 Husky 61. Runs with a 20" bar. A bit heavy but has plenty of power & is also very good when ripping. Took me quite a while to master starting from warm & hot when it needs one pull with choke & then it will go without. From cold it needs throttle lock & choke & a good bit of holding! I've always run it on 25:1 although the advice from many on here is that with modern oils, it would happily run at 50:1. The original chain was Husky 'H42' (although I now only use Stihl chains). 3/8" 9.32mm pitch. .058" 1.5mm gauge. 7/32" 5.5mm file. & on the 20" bar there are 72 drive links. Maybe something in there that helps. Chris.
