  1. My local Stihl dealer was cleaned out a couple of months back. This week, one of the knicked saws was brought in for repair by some of our 'itinerant' friends. Despite the evidence, cctv pictures, reg. numbers etc, the old bill wont take any action. Too afraid to go onto the travellers site.
  2. I do a fair bit of grass cutting including the local pub where there are two dogs. The owners became quite good at clearing up after I let it be known that I charged an extra quid for every turd I came across.
  3. One of my customers installed a log burner, plumbed in to supplement his oil fired central heating, 3 years ago. He reckons he has saved £800 a year on oil from just "half a load" of my logs. A "full load" (loose stacked, level to the sides) in my Ranger pick up, ply lined load bay, taking account of the intruding wheel arches is 1.4M3. So, if he is correct, he is getting an excellent deal.
  4. Anyone going to Saas Fe, Switzerland? Look out for my daughter Jo. Has a job as a ski nanny from Nov' through to April.
  5. The Collins Tree Guide for me too. The full size book (slightly bigger than A4 & 1 1/2" thick) in the 'office' & the half size book (identical content) travels with me.
  6. Matt, sorry I didn't get to reply before you went to the bank. The stamped counterfoils in your paying in book or the counterfoils from paying in slips are yours & you have no reason to show them to anyone else. They are simply your receipt (not his) for monies you have paid in to your account. If he paid you by cheque then the 'paid' or 'cleared' cheques, available to him from his bank will be quite sufficient for his books. If he paid you cash then he is required to make a note in his books that he has made a cash payment. This will be acceptable to the Revenue. The ball is in his court & he should not be causing you this aggravation. He is a bully & most bullies are cowards. Let 'the old dot' do the talking, tell her to repeat what I say above if he presses, If she shows that you wont back down then I feel that he will go away. Good luck to you.
  7. Not seen it at all on thuja but plenty of brown patches on leylandii round my way (mid Anglia). A couple of my customers have bought a chemical from the garden centre to spray on the hedge but my theory is that by the time you see the brown patches, any treatment is too late. As an aside, I have recognised that leylandii's trimmed more than just once a year are more prone to browning/die back.
  8. My understanding of 'moisture content' follows Quickthorns 'dry' basis. Therefore, if say, a lump of fresh cut willow has a moisture content of 120%, then the weight of water is 1.2 X the weight of the wood in the completely dry piece. If air drying reduces the moisture content to 20% then the piece will weigh just 54.5% of it's original weight.

Do any of you guys talk of "feathering the throttle" as opposed to running full bore?
  10. When I was starting out on plant i/d, I carried a little pocket notebook & jotted down a note or drawing of some detail that would help me remember the tree/plant; leaf, flower, fruit or bark together with common & latin name. It seemed that the act of making a note caused the detail to stick in the grey matter & I rarely had to refer back to the little notebook.
  11. My Echo HC30-ES is in it's third season. Starts, runs & cuts beautifully. Best hedge trimmer I've ever had. Not keen on the feel of the newer version; too much plastic anti vibration gear on it.
  12. I do a lot of hedge trimming and as with all kit, I find it rewards a little tlc. Spray lube at the start of each job, at refuelling & at the end of the day combined with correct blade tensioning = clean cut & no resin build up. I never put the scabbard on.
  13. I'm about 3 miles NE from Royston along the A505 and although the postal address is Herts we are actually over the border in S.Cambs. pm me if you're working in North Herts. I'm happy to take arb waste.
  14. Hi guys, my first post. Just returned from a holiday touring in Scotland. Stood watching one of these machines alongside the road between Lochgilphead & Inverary until the missus got fed up & dragged me away. One question for you in the know; does the machine determine when the remaining trunk width is not usable or does the operator do it by sight. The one I watched almost made me cry at the amount of good wood being jettisoned.
