  1. Not the scariest but the worst. Worked on a whippy poplar in high winds with a head torch (so no peripheral vision). By the time I came down, I was sea-sick beyond belief. Couldn't close my eyes for the rest of the night for fear of falling off the floor!
  2. And I do the same, (it's correct) But it's the 'additional' common names for Sequoiadendron giganteum that muddy the water.
  3. Another well-known English word of exclamation.
  4. Well then Owen Johnson and David Moore have also got it wrong. As they've been compiling the Collins Tree Guide, they've mistakenly classified the Coast Redwood and the Giant Sequoia as two different species.
  5. A fair point. I turned to Collins Tree Guide for reference, as the OP's question made me wonder.
  6. Coast Redwoods and Giant Sequoias are two different species. Are we talking about the same trees?
  7. George Bernard Shaw suggested that fish be spelt 'ghoti'. gh as is laugh, o as is in women, and ti as in station.
  8. Do you mean one is mistaken for the other, or that the names are interchangeable?
  9. Yes, Sir David Attenborough did a wee piece on them surviving fires.
  10. Agreed, but the Wellingtonia is also known as the giant sequoia.
  11. I thought so, but stand eager to hear otherwise.
  12. When our eldest was wee, she was bathed in a Pelicase when we were out and about.
  13. Or air holes punched with a pen, Ted.
  14. Nothing that Duct tape couldn't already do ........
  15. Spiders are very good at sizing other things up according to the twangs on their web or the first touch at close range. I reckon any native spider would offer to hold the woodlouse's coat in a fight with 'Ned'.
  16. They tend to stand alert with the abdomen arched up waiting for trouble. They don't initiate an attack - more of a counter-puncher. When two of them meet, they usually just scuttle over each other and head for cover. When you pick one up, you can feel that they're strong - and they really can nip.
  17. Yes - and bulbous thumbs were referred to as 'murderer's thumbs'.
  18. Yeah - but I'd probably come off worse!
  19. I've got LOADS around the yard. They're always up for a fight!
  20. It's not big enough to charge. Look on it as an investment - they'll do you a good turn in the future.
  21. I have no preference (equally useless). It's the same with archery or catching a ball or picking my nose - often it's the side nearest to the activity that gets used.
  22. I am ambidextrous (right down to having the same signature on both hands) and have a left-handed brother, but learning to hold a saw right-handed hasn't been a problem for him.
  23. It's hardly a fine-motor skill, just hold it like a right-hander.
