  1. That guy seems to have sold a lot of Stihl Tools, especially 200T's. Do you think he buys them broken/spares repairs and fixes them?
  2. Just ask them to hold and put the phone next to a stereo playing Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" on a continuous loop.

It was clearly faking it to score some sympathy breadcrumbs.
  4. Zubat, but mine's an un-compensating () 270mm, because I went to an event at a garden machinery shop near me and only took £100, with that I could just about afford the 270mm and a Vertex helmet set You lefty's should get gomtaro's, you can put it into the scabbard the with the handle sticking out either way. I'm sure curved blades are just a gimmick anyway
  5. Good job. I hope the results are everything you'd hoped for. I'm looking into doing the Tech Cert this september, I had a chat with the kind people at the Tree Life tent at the Arb show last week. I'm lucky because I live closest (45 minute drive) from Westonbirt, and entry/parking is free on the days you do your course which starts at 1pm, so time to wander beforehand. It's a sign, I definitely should do it haha.
  6. The saw chucking out lots of smoke is due to many pulls without it starting which floods the engine. So you say it starts fine first thing (when it's cold) then dies and doesn't really start until it's gone cold again? Check under the air filter cover to see if the winter-start cover is opened, failing that, I can imagine it's either an issue with the carb or the fuel breather. Does the fuel cap hiss when you open it after the saw dies?
  7. I use those caritools too, really useful for keeping the saw closeby and saves the ball-ache of turning around to pull it through crotches and whatnot. My small Caritool is still in one piece despite having a lower SWL
  8. The main question is will their wives believe the story when they come home the next day!
  9. They've got metal ones now that look pretty similar, why not try one of those? Clicky
  10. We should just all wear viking helmets to the arb show. No dodgy secret handshakes needed.
  11. I've got some OP, Conveniently the place I ordered it accidentally sent me 2, so I guess it's no loss if i don't like it as I can sell the other. I run a VT and had to put a Knut in the bottom to help it grip, but sometimes it's a nightmare to pull through. Maybe now it's worn in a bit I can remove the knut and it'll be fine.
  12. Pretty sure of it.
  13. I believe you need to have passed the level 2 National Certificate in Arboriculture before you can go on to the level 3 Technician's Certificate. My tutor also recommended that 2-3 years in the field before the level 3 is a really big help.

Ahh it's fine! Them huskys are all domestic jobbies anyway; so light and girly, you couldn't cause a kickback if you tried!
  15. I suppose now it's summer you can comfortably work up until like 9 o'clock, before it gets too dark and you inevitably leave stuff behind. It's also cooler during the evening which is a bonus.

Come to think of it, When I did my course 2 years ago we were also using groundie helmets when we started climbing. None of us were any the wiser. Fortunately, I got a good deal on a Peztl Vertex vent before we got onto the chainsaw up a tree stuff.
  17. Didn't they kind of halt any important technological changes on the 260 due to people just wanting a saw that was simple? That's what made the 260 great! The fact that it stayed pretty much the same inside every year while the other saws got stratified engine doohickeys and all the fancy little bits and pieces that people thought were witchcraft (not really, people just thought it's more things to go wrong.) Now Stihl have given up and thought they'd release one with all the tech their other saws have, which as you can see, is also heavier. At least they've given it a new model name. The loveable barn-door tech 260 will live on I assume.
  18. Hey guys. It's very apparent that micro-chipping is all the rage right now, with almost every client we have wanting any wood over 3' wide as logs anyway. Me, I'm just starting out, doing mostly garden work and don't know much about these mini chippers. Could someone enlighten me on a nice one to buy? I'm looking at a cheap and cheerful van, chipper and wheelie bin/dumpy bag setup to get me on my way. But not too cheap, I'd probably settle for entry-level professional to begin with. Here's one I pulled out of a random site as a starting point. The price looks pretty good for the diameter it can take. What do you think? WOODSMAN Pro Petrol Engine Shredder
  19. that's got to be the neatest hinge i've ever seen! Did you do that with a spirit level and a chisel? Good pics.
  20. The 441C/M is about £50 more expensive than a regular 441, and to me it looks like the only difference is the fancy on board computer with a self-tuning carburettor and ignition timing. It constantly adjusts the fuel/air mix depending on your altitude, outside temperature, air filter cleanliness, whether the engine is hot or cold (means no choke lever I believe, just an on/off switch) Sounds really good, but I think as far as chainsaws are concerned it's just another thing to go wrong.
  21. Isn't there a US equivalent of the CE mark that you'll need on kit to use over there? Also, isn't all kit in this country ridiculously expensive compared to other countries?
  22. I agree, I doubt they could have grown that way from the beginning. The shoots tell a tale with their sudden 'whoops, it's getting a bit wobbly out here lads, let's go back' upward and inward turning.
  23. What about those road-going trains that you sometimes see near the coast? I swear I've seen one with like 3 carriages on them, all loaded with people. I wonder what licenses they need..
  24. Yep, just another day in the life of a tree surgeon. Avoiding a few beehives and giant ants (?), lopping off branches, digging huge holes to do some root pruning and not filling the hole back in afterwards, before driving off to our secret underground brash-dumping cave to dispose of the evidence. £1200 please.
  25. My tutor mentioned this, he called it 'canopy creep'. I'm not sure how it happened initially, but since those few branches have left the main canopy I assume they've been able to do much more photosynthesis than the others; which remain 'competing' in the tightly packed crown. Possibly leading to the tree investing more energy into the stray branch's individual success I.e more growth, which in turn looks like they're going to continue creeping outwards and downwards due to the extra weight and the reaction wood not being laid down fast enough. It sounded better in my head You can also see the tips of the branches growing back in toward the centre of the tree, axiom of uniform stress?
