  1. Have you noticed the demand for kindling has dropped in the last two years ? . Do you think the discounters have killed it more than the weather. I never really considered this idea as I didn't think the public really shopped around for the best price on sticks as it's not a weekly purchase. I would imagine most of my bags get purchased with a delivery of logs as it's convenient and saves carrying home. I noticed years ago aldi etc have a flurry of kindling in October then it dries up and sells out so may be they got stuck with it this year.
  2. If it is cold I think the whole trade will be caught with trousers down again like in 2010 do you remember the anyone know where I can get some cord ? Threads. Some of my generator customers think we will have a cold one. I think it will be the same as the other years if it's cold we will sell out if it's not we wont
  3. Yes I think your right about more machines fuelwood said they have made hundreds. Also I think clean timber was in short supply while the government was paying a subsidy to burn it in power stations. So any nice stuff we had was in high demand. Difficult to know how much to stockpile for the winter. We used to make it to order through the summer but seem to be storing more than ever.
  4. The forum seems very quiet regards kindling over the past year. A few years ago it was buzzing and we could never keep up. We have been ticking over nicely but wondered if the weather has slowed things recently or is their another reason.
  5. That tele would be perfect in our yard and the amount of work I have for it I could justify it but we also need to pick up 2500kg regularly. Have thought about a big old 5 tonne forklift to run along side.
  6. No need to rub it in because people love them so much the lack of depreciation after a year made up for the cost of repairs. It was one of those vehicles that was on the edge of a cliff sorry to see yours has toppled global but you should get your 2.7 litre cheaper than trying to find a 3 LR. I have looked at all the options and my conclusion is just buy the 3 litre hilux and gloss over the towing limit.
  7. I tried a 3 year old diesel cayenne it's about 20 years out of date. Amarok is good but it's still a pick up and very expensive.
  8. That's what I thought especially having 9 discos over 20 years. As one motor trader said their crap but you got to have one. The compressor is a very good example of a poorly made component but that will be the least of your problems I did 10,000 miles in mine with about 2,000 miles towing 3500kg and it just fell around our ears I spent more time in our 16 year old landcruiser which never misses a beat. I can't name one component on the disco 4 that does not have known problems. I won't list the faults again and I hope anyone buying one loves it and has better luck than we did but it's best to know up front it could just be the later disco 4 is more electronic.
  9. Your fine for three years then if it's been good you could chance your arm for a few more years. I think best 4x4 to drive on the market but money pit when they go wrong. Get a bad one and you can kiss good bye to 20 k in a year.
  10. If it smokes heavily as it dies it's more likely air starved ie blocked air filter or collapsed hose. Seized turbo check the rotor spins if fitted. If there is very little smoke it's more likely fuel starved check the route from tank to injector. Diesel has a lot more solvent now and will kill cheap rubber fuel lines
  11. I think there is a small gauze under a cover on the lift pump 10mm spanner. They block all the time if there is any muck in the tank. My old 1984 525 is terrible for getting pints of dirty water in the funl tank every few years. I think it must puddle on the top and leak in or gets in through the lock on the fuel cap must sort it one day. I would loosen the pipe on the fuel filter and pump the lift pump to make sure you have a good flow. If it has a turbo have a look there next.
  12. I changed my bridgestones for bfg years ago much better off road but ruined the on road. When I looked into it the proper off road tyres were much heavier so upset the un sprung weight on a Nissan navara. For an extra tenner I would go bfg if you really need the off road grip they are owned my Michelin who probably have the best quality they last forever handle well and have a seriously thick side wall and don't pick up punctures or store stones like some of the others.
  13. no problem at least I got things write in the end
  14. I like to put a little something in my posts for everyone I think lots of spelling mistakes are actually caused by spell checker and you just don't notice when you read it back.
  15. I would prefer to hear what people have to say rather than hold back due to spelling. Some of Jons post can be a little challenging but I treat them a bit like doing a daily cross word 😊 . I am just reading my sons report the English teacher has spelt his name wrong when it's correct at the top of the same page and spelt aptitude as. Apptiude if the English teachers can't get it right what chance have the kids. I know lots of hard working incredibly skilled men who can't read or right. I know lots of educated idiots who's reading and writing is perfect but never actually achieve anything other than get through an inheritance. Too many people in this country use a good education as an excuse to avoid actually working and spend their life pushing bits of paper about ( I think we covered this in the excess h&s thread )
  16. Yes we are more 30- 2000 kva 300 kva is our bread and butter
  17. You work in the industry you must come across more jobs worth awkward for the sake of it idiots. No one was attacking you until you made a few arrogant statements. We all work on a daily basis with helpful h&s people otherwise nothing would get done unfortunately there are few bad apples. One advantage to an idiot guide for simple tasks is large companies can employ low paid low skilled staff and cover their back sides with paperwork
  18. I am also constantly surprised how quickly people working in the h&s industry throw the rule book out the window when trying to get diy jobs done at home with out the right tools
  19. I used to buy about 10 of them at auction for £5-£600 ea but even though I cherry picked the best ones they were so knackered it was difficult making a profit at £1200 on the good ones. The yanmar engine is ok but it's only good for about 2 maybe 4000 hrs before rebuild. The safest bet is spend the £2400 + vat and buy a new p6000s
  20. I know this is a very old post but missed it first time round. I have forgotten more than I learnt about small sets as I generally only work with whoppers. Small generators generally have a floating earth which means on 240v live to earth spike gives 120 volts and 110 only 55 volts. From experience this set up means rcds do not work if you alter the machine so the neutral is no longer floating you will get 240v to Earth so be careful.
  21. If it's the one I am thinking of it's probably made in the same factory as the Kama kipor stuff in China. I think you had problems with a pramac p6000s ? I have a feeling the machine for you would be a lister flat top 1500 rpm or as aspen said a 1500 rpm kubota.
  22. I was starting to accept some of the points steve raised then I left the house and drove past the local brand new safe soft surface kids play area. The 3 kids playing had bump hats on not make do cycle helmets but purpose made play ground safety hats. Now are these parents being response able or have we completely lost our way. I have plenty to say about h&s and will consider how to put my side of things without looking like an anti. Luckily I am in my late 40's and after 30'years experience have the option to get out the industry. I hope the next generation are keen to embrace this ridiculous paper work culture. As Mortimer says above,h&s should be about protecting the work force and using a common sense approach. It's not who can piss furthest on a piece of paper. The more professional companies we work for have an in depth logical approach an are easy to work with. Then you get the fancy management suites with allocated parking spaces awkward people drawing fat salaries running their empires badly.
  23. I have been doing the former for years with mixed results 😊 I have noticed the more paper they require the less they want to pay and it takes longer to get paid if at all.
  24. If you are going petrol buy a Honda 5 kva is 4 kW. Kettle is 3 kw if fast boil and 600 watts of lights so a bit to spare also the kettle is hardly ever on so not scoffing the juice. The other way would be camping stove and Honda powered 3 kva for about £400 or 1 kva silent hand bag
  25. H&s has done more to hold up the job than scargil and the unions ever did. It's unusualto see paper pushers going out of business. It's normally working companies not getting paid by the big boys. There seems to be a return to the culture of not paying small businesses in the hope they go bust. I was not a Blair fan but he did seem to get on top of this problem for a couple of years.
