  1. I did a 15 mile ride along Bournmouth sea front on cycle paths which are shared with pedestrians. Normally walking 6 abreast if you give them a ping with the bell they get abusive so it's easier to just leave a tyre mark up their back. There is a big pushin this country to get people out of cars and on to bikes but it's difficult if people can't share there is a reason the pavements have been widened and it's not just because the population has got fatter. It would not surprise me if the little girl was on a cycle path. I notice my neighbours are braver In in there xc90's when I am cycling than they are when I drive the battered 15 year old landcrusiers at them.
  2. Thank you makes a change for me For serious towing it's really Land Rover or land cruiser Amazon. But the amazon eats fuel and is poor for tax depreciation only allowed 8 % of value against tax per year due to the high emmissions. Commercials are 100% tax deductible and £230 a year road tax.
  3. It's a difficult one as everyone has different priorities. I would avoid Nissan because I had one and the dealers round our way we're dreadful. They have had loads of grief with the engines for over 10 years. But it was a good drive and I loved the gearbox. I drove the amorok and felt it stood head and shoulders above the rest but only 2.0 litre engine and the truck may not be tough enough especially with no low box. The price is horrendous and so is the waiting list. The dmax I thought drove crude a bit like a 15 year old l200 but it does tow 3500kg Hilux nice to drive but dated, noisey engine, poor towing weight and expensive to buy will be reliable though with good resale. I learnt years ago to stay well clear of French stuff. I don't think the new kids on the block will grasp the towing thing straight off so expect clutch and drive train problems.
  4. I am looking for the same steve but have only managed the time to drive 3 to be honest motors interest me less with every passing year. I can give you my opinion but we are all different and want different things.
  5. I have a metal one identical to the Oregon one always found it very useful saves bending down to drag rings about. I am not sure I would get on well with a heavy wooden one especially if I missed the wood and it was heading for a shin.
  6. I have the 3 ph sheppach splitter and the performance was superb 1 phase machine would be like comparing a moped with a Impreza. I converted mine to run on an 11 hp Honda and it now has no where near the power but at least we can use it in the woods. Ours is 7 years old and never put a spanner to it just plenty of grease.
  7. See this is a wait for next post to get more clues one
  8. You have to read Jons posts as fast as he wrote them. If that fails re read and imagine a somerset accent. If that fails wait for the next post for more clues . We all have the time otherwise we would not be on a forum
  9. It took a good few days to get rid of my back ache after we changed the mattress. Everyone is different and you can't tell just by laying on a mattress you need to sleep on one. If you go the pocket sprung route the amount of springs is not the be all and end all you need a good quality spring otherwise they fail after a year or so. A good brand of bed spring is calico.
  10. Put some 4x4 tyres on your land rover
  11. I will try to find the report I might be doing them an injustice as it was 6 months ago. Well worth having a good read of the John Ryan site. Memory foam mattresses can be very hot in the summer. I think they may be like marmite. I knew it was our old mattress because i slept on a Hypnos bed at a premier inn and my back was much better but the Hypnos mattress never struck me as anything special
  12. I am sure which did a test within the last year and the tempur mattresses came out as rubbish the £1600 mattress was the only one to fall to bits during the test. I went through this problem about 6 months ago crippling back aches. Bought a middle of the range pocket sprung from John Ryan. If nothing else read their web site it will give you good knowledge. Ours was £1100 and I orderered with out even seeing it due to their money back guarantee and their good reviews. Ours is superb I would go back for another when our 10 year guarantee runs out they can do the mattress in two ratings my wife is slim and I am well you know less slim
  13. My first 300 disco had the cambelt changed at the right time then the head went between 3+4. The next 4 discos we run them till the cambelts snapped normally well over 100 k. We then stripped the head off checked for piston damage relaxed a few valve train parts ( can't remember if they had push rods ) Most were sold at 4 years with 260k on the clock and most of it towing. The engines are very good which can easily be checked for wear once the head is off measure the bore and check for a lip near the top of the cylinder. You could do a compression test on the good cylinders before you strip it. The water pumps and p gasket behind them were crap so we often just changed them at 60k saves cooking a good block. We could spot an early pump failure the belt starts making lots of noise and if you look the water pump pulley is out of line with the rest. Over all a good engine but likely to crack the head especially if you tweek the fuel pump and the radiator is not 100%
  14. About £200 for a complete 2000kg one £350 for a 3500kg one. Sometimes it's worth it for the new hitch damper and tight tube also quicker to fit.
  15. After 30 years of getting grindings and dirt in my eyes I know buy those proper expensive orange goggles from screw fix£14 . If I work under vehicle I wear the open spec type goggles. My eyes have been dug around too much and suffer infections to easy now. I always wash out if I get dirt in them even tap water is better than doing nothing. I am about to try sustain eye lubricant expensive but good reviews. Look after your eyes and put some thought and money into the right ppe.
  16. I think we all got off lightly. I was reading the disco forum yesterday about the premium sound system I had occasionally would lock up and freeze. If the display, the cd changer, the amp and a few cables fail the bill will be in excess of 5k. I was thinking £400 would be a killer what happened to the days when you went down halfords and spent £99.
  17. Sounds more like an injection/sensor/egr problem. With head gasket normally the radiator pressurises and you can see bubbles comming to the surface. Oil in the coolant water in the oil and overheating problems loss of coolant and constant water at the tail pipe.
  18. It sometimes feels like you are better of at home feet up in front of the fire and let someone else have all the grief. But where is the fun in that so i guess I will be out with my 1000 kg trailer within 33km trying not to do anything rewarding tommorrow.
  19. I had new bfg mt on mine never felt like it was going to get stuck and drove well on road as well.
  20. How old is the hilux is it double cab.
  21. Boulders did a complete tipper conversion with high sides for our hilux and that cost about three and a half four years ago. I would think a simple chip box would be about 2 k. You could try making one with glasnite sides like the ridgidge bodied trucks you can hire but I would think it would be heavy.
  22. Can you not import them from fuel wood. I think Richard has spent over 20 years developing them and getting them right I would imagine less hassle than producing your own.
  23. I have been told if you can afford it the kubota is the only one to buy. I had a Kawasaki mule years ago and felt it was crude and badly built.
  24. At times I run with about 16 trailers. I have new ones, serviced ones and not so serviced . I would not trust the hand brake in reverse on any of them they simply don't work. If your not confident your chocks will hold don't un hitch. We don't use the hand brake in the yard as when left for a few weeks the shoes will bond them selves to the drums especially if cleaned new or well serviced.
