If you drop the voltage the amps increase and so does the heat in the motor so may be worth keeping an eye on how hot the motor is especially if having a chain sharpening fest.

Mild weather, low oil prices and recession means slow log sales it wont last forever and will probably come back with a bang and catch people out.

All the politicians will be keen to play down the state of the country as we are coming up to an election. The figures suggest things are getting better but does not seem to be improving for the man on the street. As soon as things pick up the mortgage rate will go up to 5 %.

Next week Aldo will be sold out and won't bother restocking. Most people will assume aldi logs are poor quality and not locally sourced. Who wants to put logs in a trolley with there food or queue for half an hour for a trolley full of timber. Most people want there nets put in the boot and hear where they come from what species and how you produce them. As a small business I don't look around for the cheapest price and try and beat it. If we cant sell product or service for reasonable money it's time to find something else to do.

I should not say this but have towed big trailers for 20 odd years. Never changed a clutch. Some did 140k with me and were not new when purchased. I always use low box when moving loaded trailers and when stuck in traffic. I may have been lucky but cant remember changing a clutch.

It does make you wonder. I like the engineering principal of kiss. Keep it simple stupid. But I would also consider they may have made the gearbox lighter to save fuel. Also years ago the average van knocked out 80 hp. Land Rover are just about to launch a 2.5 litre 4 cyl engine that pokes out 250 hp. Combine this with people that use the clutch like a switch you can see why they chuck some springs in.

I would imagine as long as you have travel on ram you would need to adjust manually as you lift. My bobcat forks dont self compensate as you lift like my jcb tele does.

Big thanks for everyone's advice one thing I never appreciated was how much lower the ball would be compared with my big trailers and how far under. I have contacted alternatorman and when I get a minute I think will get the alt away to them. The only thing stopping the hilux from doing the job is the poor steering lock but this may be due to the high lift springs and big wheels someone fitted in the past. May be worth getting smaller wheels and tyres and adjusting steering lock. Otherwise it ticks most of the boxes big load area so don't need a trailer. 4x4 and seems to go through the deepest mud and reliable. I don't want to spend £1000's on a compact tractor because I have no need for the pto 3pl or front loader if fitted. A rav 4 for £400 would probably do my job.

Agreed lots of all terrain tyres are not marked for snow and ice either. Our 205 van went round an icey bend into our industrial every morning for weeks bit sideways sometimes but the Range Rover no chance straight on its roof. Winter tyres are amazing especially when new that's how a lot of Europeans get about. There is a line of thought that the weather is wet and mild enough in the uk to keep the winter tyres on all year. If I did 20 k a year and a car I would fit in September and bin after a year.

Good to hear joy. We could up the advertising but then the stuff goes over night and we can't keep up and let our regular customers down. I think it's just due to the mild weather. Last 5 years we were hunting round for timber and 3 weeks to delivery. I don't want Lindy kindling 5 days a week as she looks after the house family and helps run the generator business. Kindling = fun. Generators = better money. I guess you can't have it all ways.

I had a sanderson 2.5 tonne machine about 12 years ago. I gave it an easy life but the chassis snapped in half which apparently was common so we spent several hours welding it up. A few months later the king pin on the rear axle snapped and the whole lot fell into a hedge tree. It was recovered and taken for scrap. I have had a jcb 525 for ten years and been good as gold.

I keep looking for a 527 - 67. Everything seems to be knackered or huge money. The later 535 looks value for money but am guessing cheaper because they are too electronic.

I find the bbc 5 day is normally spot on for next day yet the 10 day gets it completely wrong even next day ? I like the format as its plain and simple like me. Looks like we are in for some nice frosty weather and the phone has started ringing already. -
She is still in training she still not got the hang of fags and kindling don't mix so she could be starting from scratch soon.

We use monofilament nets which I laid outside for 2 years they went white within a few months but after 2 years were as strong as day one. On one of my gallery pictures you can see the day light has changed the colour of the bag from the start of the 1500 bag run to the end which would only be a few weeks.

My wife has filled every available shed, workshop and covered space with pallets of nice neat kindling. She is like an 8 stone Duracell bunny. My landcrusiers is on the drive and she is now weighing up the double garage hopefully the cold weather will get it moving.

Agree the ideal snow is here for a day or two then nice sunny crisp days followed by another day of snow two weeks later. Followed by 6 months of summer at 26 degrees. But I have a feeling it's more likely to be rain followed by two weeks of 34 deg in October -
The government used to subsidise it u could get 3 rolls for £15 when the grants stopped they went to £45 not sure if the grants are back or coming back may be worth doing some research before u buy. The money came from the energy compAnies that's why they used to sent energy bulbs in the post nobody wanted.

How old is the fuel . I know it's 2 stroke but I have a few 4 stroke engines about and after about four months they will not start often just draining the fuel bowl gets them started but change the fuel and they start first pull.

Sounds like it's the lift pump again especially if it had a pattern one. Even genuine ones are cheap. If it has a priming lever lossen a pipe after the pump it should squirt out well if you give it a few pumps. Could be something completely different but lift pumps are cheap and known for it.

We have a glut of timber for making kindling at the moment and renewablejohn thinks it is because power stations are not burning at the moment but from March the new grants start. It will be interesting to see how this effects the price of timber in general. Last year we struggled to get a 100 bags of kindling on a pallet before it was sold and we were lucky to keep a few tonne of raw material flowing in. This year we have nearly 20 pallets ready and spare and must have at least 50 tonnes of off cuts and building. How times change. We are ticking over nicely but certainly no need to put in long days. I dont think cutters gained from the increase in cord price. I seem to remember the government brought in a £15 a tonne tax for timber from forestry commission sites. Private land owners then jumped on the band wagon and cord went up £10 a year for 4 years. This seemed to mirror the increasing price of oil very well until it reached £65 a tonne delivered in last year. Now it seems to have dropped to about £40

Explains why they are giving the logs away around here. We gave up buying cord in 3 years ago and it was £55 + vat a tonne delivered in. There are lots of people selling logs around here now. I was paying low 20's in 2008
