I would just like to say I meant no offence to disabled people. You have to remember I live nr Andover. We have a large population of over eating unemployed and proud of it excess gold wearing tracky bottom wearing cafe going chavs.

One of the things that killed my log business was lack of storage. Customers will not invest in logs when they have to pay off the credit card from Christmas. The other things that killed my log business were lack of wood,lack of money, lack of customers, lack of good kit and a bad back it was never going to work was it

How does the Dmax compare towing 3 tonnes against an Amazon. The dmax and new ranger are the only two that would make the short list. The d4 we just sold was brilliant in mud with a trailer. The old d2 before it with no diff lock and relied on tc was a bit pants

I have a video some where of our land cruiser on wet grass in gear ticking over with all four wheels turning and not moving I just got out and left it to get on with it. The reason was road based tyres rather than a set of big at which transformed it. But saying that our disco got out of some really sticky stuff with road tyres. I am not brand loyal and tend to pick the vehicle to suit the job.

The advantage to permanent 4 wheel drive when towing is that when decending steep hills you use the engine braking to slow the out fit. Unless the wheels are sliding this braking will be distributed to all four wheels. Whereas on a pick up this will only be on the rear two wheels. I would be happy to tow 2.5 tonne behind a pickup but 3.5 tonnes with nothing in the tub would not be for me. Permanent 4 wheel drive and an unladen vehicle weight of around 2500kg makes for a nice secure stable tow tug.

Yes but if you engage the diff lock I think you will still have drive to the back even with the front wheels slipping. My land cruiser has a centre diff lock and axle locks but the discovery will still leave it in the mud. Land rovers are good at mud but not much else.

The way I looked at it was if I was looking at two vehicles the same in condition miles and year. The better specked l200 was £300 The hilux was £2000 I would not hesitate to buy the hilux. I just found them incredibly reliable and durable even when you have abused and knackered them they still start on the button in a -10 frost

I was with Barclays for about 10 years with free banking unfortunately they were completely hopeless. Last 12 years free with Santander but not sure if they still offer new customers. I can't remember ever paying charges .

The reason LR are good off road is the long suspension travel allows the wheel to drop down and gain traction from the ground. The other good thing about them is the wide range of cheap tyres available for a £100 a corner. Buy an X5 and u get 8mm of tread for £400 a corner and they last a year if lucky. Whereas my Landcruiser cross axles easily and fails to put enough pressure down. Although I know which I prefer using to tow big generators up the country. Horses for courses

I like your thinking I am sure a bing bong could easily be wired in with the dash light but think it would be tiresome if your are in 4x4 all day.

The defender is permanent 4 wheel drive with low box and diff lock. With diff lock in you have equal traction front and back but you could still spin 2 wheels as you dont have diff locks. The pick ups only drive to the rear wheels. When you engage 4wd the front axle is driven and often locked so traction to both front wheels. unless you have lsd or diff lock on the back you may spin a rear wheel.

I would love to see, that makes alot more sense than the traditional ifor williams set up with wheels pointing in all directions from new. Can you modify a chieftan trailer from ireland or are they too heavy to start with.

True put like that makes a strong argument to be vat registered especially if most of your clients are commercial. It's nice getting a cheque from the vat man

Can u borrow a pto generator and some fan heaters or is it too far gone for that. If it's too far gone then needs rebuild. May be buy a pto generator and connect it to a kiln or heat workshop after rebuild.

You could be right iperhaps I am thinking no tax on the first 10k but that could be wrong too 😊.

If the vehicle cost 10 k plus vat = 12k. If you are not vat registered you claim 12 k back against your tax. So often being non vat registered is not as bad as they think. But bad news if you have low earnings and only pay tax at 10% rate and you have to wait up to year to get the money back rather than a couple of months.

You can 100% on a van or commercial things may of changed but you can only claim for £12,000 of value on a car per year so a 50 k car will take many years to right down in the mean time you will be paying tonnes of tax. You can register for vat as you start your business with any turn over. If most of your customers can claim the vat back it's almost a no brainier. It also disciplined you into completing your books every 3 months rather than waiting until you have forgotten or lost the receipts. I am looking into claiming back the vat on a new landcrusier car. Some are vat applicable to certain trades if you need them for work. Not sure of the ins and outs but I think they then tax you for private use which will 100's of pounds a month. I don't know how they handle that because I am sole trader not wage slave or limited does anyone know if it's a loop hole.

I have towed 15 tonne of air braked trailer behind 6 tonnes of new John Deere and it felt as safe as houses. I have towed 5 tonne of trailer and generator round an air field and it felt like a fun parks ride with butt cheeks clenching the seat. Moved the same generator recently with the d4 and it was not much improved. A lot depends on how good the suspension is on the truck. In my opinion 3.5 tonne is enough behind an Amazon. 2.5 tonne is enough behind an old Land Rover.

I have a feeling your accountant may be getting cars confused with commercials. I have a Vito van and claim all vat back as its for work. My landcrusiers car is also for work but I claim all the vat back. But every 3 months I have to pay about £100 for the private use ie the vat element. The LC only does low miles ea year so not really worth it but it does not long to spend £400 in vat on an old car at 20 mpg.

I think a similar thing happens with kindling machines. Dealer says 70 gas an hour earn at £1 ea profit = £70 an hour or earn £320 from a tonne of timber But they forget it takes nearly as long to cut to 6" The machine and building maintenance, The waste clearing and disposal Then you have to collect material, shrink wrap to pallet and finally load on lorry means its more like £15 an hour

Good crimbo present. When he sends the reg doc off he will get the tax refunded watch you dont get caught out you ave a weeks grace or something.

I have three scruffy bits of kit that can have log grab on one bucket on another forks on the tele all working together makes the job. I found the cost of road insurance for the tele to high. I never got on with tractor and loader too slow and can't see after a tele loaders can be a bit annoying especially with the speed of a large bobcat.
