  1. I used to buy about 10 of them at auction for £5-£600 ea but even though I cherry picked the best ones they were so knackered it was difficult making a profit at £1200 on the good ones. The yanmar engine is ok but it's only good for about 2 maybe 4000 hrs before rebuild. The safest bet is spend the £2400 + vat and buy a new p6000s
  2. I know this is a very old post but missed it first time round. I have forgotten more than I learnt about small sets as I generally only work with whoppers. Small generators generally have a floating earth which means on 240v live to earth spike gives 120 volts and 110 only 55 volts. From experience this set up means rcds do not work if you alter the machine so the neutral is no longer floating you will get 240v to Earth so be careful.
  3. If it's the one I am thinking of it's probably made in the same factory as the Kama kipor stuff in China. I think you had problems with a pramac p6000s ? I have a feeling the machine for you would be a lister flat top 1500 rpm or as aspen said a 1500 rpm kubota.
  4. I was starting to accept some of the points steve raised then I left the house and drove past the local brand new safe soft surface kids play area. The 3 kids playing had bump hats on not make do cycle helmets but purpose made play ground safety hats. Now are these parents being response able or have we completely lost our way. I have plenty to say about h&s and will consider how to put my side of things without looking like an anti. Luckily I am in my late 40's and after 30'years experience have the option to get out the industry. I hope the next generation are keen to embrace this ridiculous paper work culture. As Mortimer says above,h&s should be about protecting the work force and using a common sense approach. It's not who can piss furthest on a piece of paper. The more professional companies we work for have an in depth logical approach an are easy to work with. Then you get the fancy management suites with allocated parking spaces awkward people drawing fat salaries running their empires badly.
  5. I have been doing the former for years with mixed results 😊 I have noticed the more paper they require the less they want to pay and it takes longer to get paid if at all.
  6. If you are going petrol buy a Honda 5 kva is 4 kW. Kettle is 3 kw if fast boil and 600 watts of lights so a bit to spare also the kettle is hardly ever on so not scoffing the juice. The other way would be camping stove and Honda powered 3 kva for about £400 or 1 kva silent hand bag
  7. H&s has done more to hold up the job than scargil and the unions ever did. It's unusualto see paper pushers going out of business. It's normally working companies not getting paid by the big boys. There seems to be a return to the culture of not paying small businesses in the hope they go bust. I was not a Blair fan but he did seem to get on top of this problem for a couple of years.
  8. I have to deal with these so called corporate people on a daily basis. Educated idiots a lot of them with a university degree in bullshit. When I enquired what extra content I needed they said a bit more colour and some check boxes.
  9. I think the d950 may be the same. I have a spare 850 for my britruck but the coolant pipes are routed different so if you find one make sure the water pump is the same.
  10. Agreed also when you have them from new you know how they have been treated and even when 9 years old don't seem to give as much trouble as the used 3 year old van.
  11. I can see your point and normally go this route my self ( 3 years old 50 k miles half the money of new ) but more now than ever I give a lot of thought to buy new and dump at end of warranty. Diesel engines now seem to be very electronic and complex to meet emmission requirements. This fashion for getting more horses out of less cc's also means less margin for error when things go pear shaped. They don't put an once more ally ( note not copper ) into radiator than they need to. At 5 k for a new engine that's a third of the value of a new vehicle.
  12. Over 3 years that works out about £18,000 do you then give the vehicle back with 36,000 miles on the clock. I would be looking to get another 5 years out the vehicle before selling it for £2000 how much does a transit cost can't be more than 25k tops.
  13. You could do it the once for your hourly rate and see what it entails. That way the customers risk is limited. I can understand not wanting to pay by the hour can the job be done in a short day with travelling if so quote for a normal or extended day gives a bit of spare on the job. I use a recycle deck on a 6 ft toro around my house once a week and you can hardly see any cuttings.
  14. I never thought about it this way before but if you stood cord on end would it season quicker ?
  15. I prefer beech especially at that price. You don't have so many mould problems either and I think it burns a little hotter for a bit longer.
  16. Yes get a d4 Jon mate can't beat it
  17. do tell more about the spread of droplet on tissue never tried that is a timed thing depending on brand of tissue. I would imagine you can tell from experience how fast it spreads out ? I can normally tell if we could have a problem the way it falls of the stick, the smell, and if the engine has only done an hour since last year but the oil is half inch higher on the stick. The main offenders are sets with Hugh bulk tanks on stands because the pressure by passes the seals in the lift pump and fuel system. If I suspect a problem sample goes of to findings and I think they use uoa
  18. I was under the impression that commercial vehicles are 100% tax deduct able in one year. So if you have a high rate tax bill on the way it's a good way of taking the sting out of that. Borrowing money or taking any sort of loan or hp is always going to be more expensive than buying out right but it does preserve your cash flow for other projects if you need it. Leasing or hp just means you have someone else looking for their share of the pie. I could be missing a trick may be lease companies can buy so cheap they pass on the savings and these are reflected in the monthly payments ? I am think a clean 3 year old van is going to loose me less money than the £350 a month repayments unless I use it hard but then it sounds like they fine you anyway.
  19. Interesting read. I have been aware for many years that lightly loaded engines and really good quality clean oil can mean shiney glazed bores lots of breathing and not many hp when it's needed. I don't like changing generator oil every year unless we find fuel dilution. I would think for a Perkins Diesel engine a good quality 15/40 turbo Diesel engine lube would be ok
  20. I would be inclined to save my time and buy something with a brass pump ideally a cat. Or kranzle look reasonable with spares available. Something with a little quality you can rebuild next time. If ever
  21. I like the mercs and they seem to have rust proofed them better since 2007. Had an lt 35 and it was great mostly merc running gear in those days. Had some good transits had a really bad one in 1995 and it put me off for life.
  22. Bought a concept 2 when it was 4 years old for about £400 good bit of kit I do ten minutes on the rower and 40 minutes on the cross trainer sometimes throw in 6 k on the rower I feel like it. Been on it 4 times a week since October and given up drinking feel 20 years younger.
  23. I use cycle ways when ever possible but most are clogged with fatties walking 6 abreast if you ping your bell they turn around and get violent. If you run them over you damage your bike so you can't win they just don't get the sharing thing. I have noticed my neighbours can be ignorant when driving past but I get my own back when they walk their dogs and I am in the land cruiser alls fair
  24. Was this a 2008 d4d I ask as this was meant to be the only year that suffered this problem. Interesting write up I have always thought of this as one of the best engines around apart from this little problem. I would hold the Land Rover idea for now 😃
  25. The reason I have kept my 1999 Amazon so long. Since the cost of raw materials went up everything is made as light as possible. They almost seem to be making vehicles to break. Not convinced I need 240 bhp and the complexity and size of a v8 in family tow truck. You have ten times my knowledge on lube oils tcd but i have heard to get oils low soot they have taken a lot of the additives out that benefit older engines ? So the idea of buying the most expensive highest spec oil on the shelf may actually harm an engine. I guess as always best to fit what is specified
