  1. Loaders cost money and run on diesel and you really need another pair of hands.
  2. Shiney tractors £40,000 plus or fastracs and unimogs have air brakes. I have hydraulic brakes if needs must but with 14 tonnes on the back feels better with air brakes. Some times its cheaper to spend an extra hour or two on the road than spend 10k especially if you dont need it every day and the jobs worth it. Not sure I fancy doing 50 mph with a fully loaded trailer anyway 30mph is enough.
  3. Bobcat small great machine but hard on unmade surface. Teleporters can be slow and big. Cut to around a metre with chain saw and man handle would be one answer.
  4. Have built a trailer with air and hydraulic brakes to carry 8-10 tonnes of cord. Need a fastrac or unimog but cant afford 10k plus for something decent. Too late in the season to process for this year. Would you buy a ford Tw15 or similar for about 6k and struggle for a year or 2 most of my wood is within 6 miles. Access to yard is no good for arctic. We have someone with an 8 wheeler who is great but booked for weeks and sometimes you just need to turn the key and go.
  5. Good info I never knew that. I read somewhere you need to exceed 650 deg c to burn of treated wood.
  6. Getting a business of the ground and earning a good living was the easy bit. Employing people I never got the hang of and 20 years later still none the wiser.
  7. I would say be honest. I assume you will start as a sole trader this is a business rather than a company. You will be a proprietor rather than a director. Present your skills and qualifications rather than an image at first. As you gain the trust your business will grow. Good luck I hope it goes well for you starting a business I think is a combination of luck, hard work and common sense.
  8. Someone moved into our village and complained to british rail about the noise. Their response was its the main London to exeter line and has been their since 1840.
  9. Billys right never heard anyone else complain may just be we never had the right round wood.
  10. I bought a little german electric machine from Lidls mainly to true up teeth half way through life of chain. I sharpened a chain just kissing the teeth gently no blueing. Thought I would need to finish by hand but tried it first and was amazed. Maybe My hand sharpening was not as good as I thought . The grinder was £19.95 and I would not bother spending more. I used to have a problem with bars jamming half way through cut on wood processor and new it was due to my sharpening grinder sorts this problem.
  11. You are guilty of trying to earn a living and with that information they will work out you probably earnt some money. This what they are after and unfortunately we are an easy target.
  12. You can transport something like 900 litres of gas oil with out an adr licence. One of my rival companies refuelled gensets and it did well, then packed up over night. I have heard alot of old wilderbeasts say the price of logs has never been so high but cord, gas oil and processors is even higher and its the margin in between thats important. And for that reason they are out.
  13. I have some ifor tippers the pumps are not great. Most common cause of failure is water gets in and seizes the bottom brush often free this off and back in business. If you can live with out the back up hand pump, any taillift pack will do as long as it fits the space. The quality of the ratcliff and smiths industries stuff I think is better. Now you have a new pump I would craft a cover out of a 25 litre drum to fit over to keep the water out. I spray my motors with waxoyl or battery terminal protector. Sorry to go on but I have a shelf full of dead motors.
  14. Is that why I could not post on one thread but could on another.
  15. I had a couple of hirobos in the early 90's mine were more in love with kissing the ground. very addictive and cost money in those days about £100 if you landed even slightly heavy. Often used to rebuild 2 a week.
  16. I get reject timber for kindling production. long lenghts of feather edge and tongue and groove. Sometimes a bit small for kindlett but could be ideal for this job. Pm if interested I would imagine you need to be based in the south of england to make it pay otherwise transport will kill it.
  17. If you are vat registered you can also claim vat back on vans processors or anything else you buy that has it on.
  18. All our log sales include 5% which we pay to the vat man. Our pub customers can claim it back so gives us the edge sometimes. We dont advertise the vat as it stops private people trying to knock it off the bill.
  19. I have full no claims and have always found NFu very good but they have just put all my vehicles from £400 ea to over £600
  20. I have been looking on there if you can get the vat back better to buy new from jonsie. I bet it makes at least 550
  21. No offence was taken. We all have to make a margin. I dont know why retailers get so hung up on % margin. Fast moving non returning items like this must be ideal for them in the winter.
  22. That truck has to be a nightmare to get round roundabouts let alone corners. we use the same engines in our gensets and the fuel cost is horredous on red let alone white.
  23. Our customers retail them at between £3-£5 . We have sold them with our log deliveries for two years now 3 for £10 and they fly out very rarely do they not sell on a delivery. We dont sell them on the phone we hold them up and show the customer on delivery and give them the choice.
  24. Does he come from Manchester called ged
  25. Ditto you need to double the cost to cover the hour or so it takes to fight them into a net. £5 a bag minimum wholesale or retail.
