  1. Did anybody check to see if the little brass filter in the fuel tank was able to drop down when saw was laid on its side. If it struggles to pick up the fuel it will run weak and have idle problems.
  2. As I understand it any vehicle trailer combination weighing over 3500kg used for business unless covered by one of the excemptions needs a tacho. Never heard of the 3300kg rule. You can plate your trailer down yourself old or new ( or you could ). stamp an alloy plate and rivet to trailer. We did ask customers a few years ago if we could deliver bulk bags but it was a resounding no. The idea reminds people of extra cost and packaging and most customers stack their logs along one wall within an hour of delivery. A pallet of logs in a garage would be in the way for alot of people.
  3. Just plate the trailer for 3499 kg if it makes that much difference I would have thought ifor would do it. Are you saying 3500kg and above is operators licence.
  4. or an ifor tipper with mesh sides and doors. The middle size one TT105 I think carries 2.5 tonne and grosses at 3.5 tonnes.
  5. I thought they were good little machines but we sometimes need to pick up 2.5 tonnes and our 1.5 cu bags weigh a tonne when green. I think the biggest advant lifts 1000kg close in ?
  6. I am going to have a toy cull soon as I have two of everything. I would get a skid steer and mack a bund on concrete base. I am looking for some of those pyramid shaped motorway concrete barriers to make a bund. I store my logs in 1.5 bags and use the tipping loops to spread them in bund then scoop up and load. Many different ways of doing it depends what kit you have and what comes along at the right price.
  7. Depends where you live how often people in your area get put on a weigh bridge how large a load is. I found 1.5 cu at 20% moisture weighs 500kg. so 3 loads with the weight of a tipper conversion will put a tranny over 3500kg. May not worry you but worth knowing before spending alot of money.
  8. I quote a third extra and never get the order so it suits me. You may have to test your market if you still want the work. If its cold in October they will buy bits of chipboard from your kitchen by christmas. We are just going into the period where every log needs to be 20% exactly 9 in long 3.5 in wide with royal seal of approval burnt and branded into the end of every log.
  9. I have been a generator engineer since 1986 and I only just understand what he is on about
  10. If your vat registered it pays not to charge delivery as logs are 5% and delivery is 20% . We deliver all our logs free.
  11. 6 inch granny logs take twice as long create twice as much saw dust and use up all the air space in the truck. Charge a third more. I dont think you will struggle to sell your 12in logs but if you have room do two sizes 9.5 and 12 I think most people want house brick sized logs. With these super insulated houses all people will need in the future will be a 5 kw stove to heat the house so we need to get used to it.
  12. I buy a semi syn lube for the gensets we service. I also use it in our vans seems good nothing gone bang ? . I use caterpillar for my oil sample testing. The company that supplies our oil is specialised products in Dorset. The oil is reasonably priced as we buy 600 litres at a time would be interested in your test results. We have far more problems with coolant degrading than poor oil results.
  13. I think there is someone in our area currently selling 3 cu metres for £140 so until they run out I may aswell top up my tan and save my diesel. The test valley is a wealthy area as well, madness . Mind you it could be a nice green mix of pop and conny.
  14. We have been busy with large orders but are now taking orders for October if anyone needs topping up.
  15. I own the trailers and the westwood but the £70,000 tractor gets hired for the week for about £500. I tend to group my clearance jobs together if possible. We normally chase Beech and ash for logs but always open to offers.
  16. I have to declare an interest because we make bags of kindling. But look really hard at your figures including the hr it takes to prep the material for 60 bags. It may be more profitable to just buy it in even if you have the timber lying around. Good luck with what you decide to do its good fun making kindling for a few days at a time. If we can help with supply let me know.
  17. Are the trees too small to turn into cord wood. Have this if it helps
  18. I have a bob cat which was used on a pig farm for 3 years when new. After about 4 months the brass fuel pick up I think picks up straw particles which we cant seem to drain out. To get fuel tnk out is eng out job. We use an air line to blow back and clear pick up away it goes for several months. I would snap or grind bolts off inspection cover then drill and retap threads.
  19. Wooden but could be metal frames. Needs to be so you cant see through under 6ft but could add another foot for detail.
  20. There are tank cleaning machines with polishing filters. We have a home made one which is excellent. New they are about £1500. We stick ours in all our tanks and leave them for a few hours. Because they turn the fuel over several times they eventually grab everything. Sounds like you may have the algi plant growing in your tank may be worth getting some proper biocide aswell.
  21. I need some large drive way gates 6ft x 6ft 2 off for my drive. I have enough material here to make 100 gates but not the time or skills. We are near Andover hants if anyone has any ideas.
  22. You should get 1.5 cu metres of loose logs out of 1 tonne of green beech. For the last 5 years we have processed 200 tonnes a year with no log deck. Just made a manual log deck this year and the job is soooo much easier should of done it 5 years ago. I dont think I could justify the cost or effort of making a powered deck unless I was going to do + 500 tonnes a year. Big processors dont seem to make the best of small cordwood and the logs seem to come out bigger. I think a 300-350mm machine is the best compromise as it seems more controlable. After last years mild winter I would be cautious ivesting to much money.
  23. I am going with the easy jet idea this year. 15-20% priced to sell through the summer at £130 for 1.5 cu metres. If we get a cold snap in oct £140 if it gets short in dec lots more. You really find out who your regular customers are in mild winter and there is not many that don't shop around for cheap wood. Logs don't go off if stored right so you can always sell next year.
  24. Logs tend to be the poor relation to everything else that goes on in the yard. Ok when work is quiet unless you get the timber free I find it pays about ten quid an hour when you realistically break it down.
