Kero burns very well in my boiler.

our steam cleaner was a bit smokey so I thought running on kero it would be a bit cleaner. Within 3 minutes the fuel pump was dead and cost me £90 . I tend to put the correct clean fuel in everything now.

The brunt of this one is forcast in the west. This time last year it was 29 deg. In two weeks time they forcast 15 deg lower than average for time of year. A good sharp cold snap early on gets the fires opened up and orders in. If it does not get cold early on people think they will wing it through a mild winter.

Arctic blast coming in two weeks apparently stocked up on logs . Building stocks of kindling. If anyone wants to reinvest some of their early profit in top quality kindling let me know. Good luck with your sales

alot of medium sized processors can be driven with an 8hp honda. The reason for needing a 40hp is the stability when transporting. Or has the 30hp gone somewhere else.

My hilux is better in most ways over the defenders we have had. Except I dont carry much weight maybe 700kg tops . If I was carrying weight I would have a defender again

Set up an arbtalk co op deal thingy. You pay for what you need but there must be some buying power on here especially with the likes of Nick channer and his ag kit. You could even put a cut towards Arbtalk.

Sometimes you want to say something and no matter how you put it on a forum it just comes out wrong. No matter how much you read before posting it just causes offence to someone. I read and take others posts with a pinch of salt. If you were face to face you would have a chance to correct yourself and explain. I remember in my apprenticeship days alot of the old boys put the nippers down as they felt threatened with career prospects so were reluctant to pass on the limited skills they had. Now as one of the old boys I cant see why you would not train and nurture ( and in alot of cases babysit ) newbees. When you are young you learn fast and its rewarding to see a younger member progress. I like arbtalk, I have never cut a tree down in my life and am not a tree surgeon and I have been on here years

I tend to think that with delivery our 1.5 cu metre load takes 3 hrs. Factoring in clean up time and machine repairs and large cord that needs ringing. We travel upto ten miles and the average has to be 7 miles. If you approach another merchant in your area you will find they prefer to sell to end user rather than you. I have tried and almost done a deal on 3 occasions but either the load was short or wet and full of trash. Last year we charged £95 for 1 cu metre and £130 for 1.5

I did sit down years ago and work out best I could what the costs were per cubic metre on a machine similar to yours. Trying to work out chain wear and bar oil seems petty but on tight margins it all adds up. My feeling is costs have risen faster than sale price. The answer is sell in december and hope for a cold winter. The other problem is in my experience at least 20% of a load is too big for a sensible processor so you need to ring it and use a splitter. another 20% is under 4" so a waste of time and fuel on a processor. Last year I did about 150 tonnes used 50 litres of bar oil, 3 chains, 2 bars and £300 in cherry and probably about the same in petrol. I am afraid to work it out these days.

If we got £160 a metre the hourly rate would be £30 not £10 . I would say the average for metre of logs round here is about £80 andif you buy in cord its cost £60 in materials to get it to your door.
