  1. Nice looking cord most of which would go through a 12" processor. A 3rd of the load is not 20" and another 3rd of the load 2" sticks. Makes me wish I still did logs only joking.
  2. I think when buying cord you need to trust the person your buying from not to pull a fast one I am more interested in buying volume rather than 4 tonnes of water. From seeing Nick Channers previous posts I would trust him to deliver me a good load of timber if I was still in the game. If I move premises and can get an arctic in and you have some nick I will get some large butts of softwood of you in the future.
  3. I think I see a nice ex arable one owner machine on ebay this week think it was 525 with equal size wheels looked very tidy.
  4. Tony good ideas I did a year or so back put a new seat in and sort some of the electrics. The machine is physically too big for the ground I have left. It should make about 4k so If I add 6k to it will get a much better machine. The old girl I have has been very loyal and capable so will be sad if it does go. Maybe I will sell a bit more junk and when the logs have gone there will be alot more room.
  5. Good points nick I would be happier spending 7-10k maybe I should look harder for something a bit cleaner.
  6. We are a foot deep in mud are you thinking they are only as capable as a buggyscopic. A buggyscopic would be a waste of time here. our 4x4 525 has no problems got me thinking now
  7. I think they changed the rules back recently from 100% depreciation to 50%. I dont think there is any difference between new and used but I may easily be completely wrong. If you replace kit every year its more tax efficent but heavier on depreciation. Also if the allowance is higher in the first year and you dont have a good year your tax will be at 25% rather than 50% so sometimes it pays to spread it over a few years.
  8. Good advice never occured to me it would hold its money I just assumed it would drop 10k once it had got muddy then I would spread the drop over 10 years. I never gave a thought to road use or towing I tried to insure our current one with NFU 10 years ago and it was £1100 a year road use and £1100 to insure while lifting. I did hear coop would do it for £60 a year but never got that far. It would be useful to take onsite occasionally and as they only weigh 3500kg you would not need a huge lorry.
  9. I have just sold all my logging kit but need a decent telehandler. Everything we have seems to be used and u have to cope with the short commings. Our current telehandler the seats always wet and cab steamed up lights dont work things are leaking oil. Its permanently on the go some days and I fancy something like a jcb 527-50 or manitou 526 a compact machine. If we had it 10 years it would probably still be unmarked. who has spent 30k and regretted it and who has spent 30k and glad they bought new. I keep tracking little jcb's down for 24k with 2000 hrs on the clock and they look trashed.
  10. Leaflets is a good one . We used to mailshot selected customers but dont bother now because of the cost. We use a free paper based nr newbury called the oracle not sure if you can see it on line. A business card size ad is £30 and lasts a month we always get 7 new log customers and even find people keep it by the phone for 6 months. The guy who runs it I think targets value for money good honest, reliable, quality small businesses but we still manage to get in
  11. If I had got 60% of my delivered cord through the processor I might still be doing firewood. Come to think of it if I got 60% of the wood I ordered might still be doing it.
  12. often the cheapest ads have the most effect and free editorial the best. My brother did not advertise the business he was starting until he finished employment in case he got trampled in the rush
  13. Maybe but the log snobs will never go for that. I am always looking for cheap saw timber to put through our kindlet.
  14. Its all twisted green beech round here. Plenty of 2 in sticks and bananas.
  15. I am sure like yourself alot of stove sellers are helpful and honest but alot are not our local one loves our nets of beech logs but wont sell them for £6 because it shows the cost of fuel for the stoves.
  16. Make it so you can take it with you, I like the look of those horse shelters you can push round the field. Man on ea corner and an ifor willaims they could go anywhere.
  17. Looking at your pics will inspire me, that and the hatred I am developing for mud a bit of planning and some decent concrete makes life so much easier. I have some of those railway sleepers on order for first week in December.
  18. I bought a stack of lime 2 years ago for £250 it filled a 17 tonne lorry and 3 big ifor trailers. So about 24 tonnes. I thought I had bought trouble but when it dried out I tried it on our stove. For the first few minutes a pronounced woody smell but then I would say it burnt as well and for as long as any beech I have had. Ash tends to be half dried when you get it so you get good volume for the weight. If left in the cord for 3 years I find it does not season at all. I find sycamore hard on the eyes but nice to cut up can go black if seasoned outside ideal I would think in a kiln.
  19. Well done mate if things are slow its got to be a good thing to get an order like that before christmas in this climate.
  20. The recycled boards have no strength when warm. The proper stuff is called phenolic board or something if you do a search I think I got some from silverman. Not cheap but looks the bus and lasts 15-20 years.
  21. I think thats why lindy only has a left hand glove.
  22. Thats good going joy I will have a word with wife now:sneaky2:. found new source of material in nick of time. Wife thinks her middle finger on left hand is shorter than rest do you know anyone who wants life time supply of right hand gripper gloves. Come to think of it do they make kindlets for left hand people.
