  1. Somebody who has some wood for grabs from their site hardwood - beech ash and syc felled in feb and cut into manageable lengths and rings sorry cant remember volumes. they are a charity carrying out work to an old tudor mansion for community use and would like a donation in return. (Mods i hope this ok to post) If any body is local and interested drop them a line: [email protected] (contact is Pat)
  2. What would be the best way to suspend a tree house/ platform in a tree. I was considering a cable brace style of support - rather than drilling for eyebolts. but weighing up the pros of not drilling against the pressure of the suspension of the platform weight on the cambium has left me wondering what would be less harmfull. any thoughts appreciated Dean
  3. Unless they have a holding area for it I wouldnt think that they would be interested. And if they do have one they may not want you on it for insurance reasons. Surely there is easier ways of getting firewood than off the M4?
  4. thanks for the info so far
  5. any do's and dont's? timings. responses to pruning, internodally and at growth points thanks Dean
  6. got a badly scored p+p on an ms660 any one have experience of fitting and using a non genuine barrel and piston the price difference is huge. will it last?
  7. big trees are hard work and so should be priced accordingly - however there are those that will price for the glory of doing the job - I'm sure the novelty wears off. On the other hand - sometimes the other guy just sees (or thinks he sees) an easier way of doing it than you or I and prices it different. As you say, let 'em have it.
  8. I was told that willow is the only species to swing both ways - from a vascular sense. others won't due to the systemics. I have no idea if this includes or excludes poplars - but ive never seen it used like willow for live structures/ fencing - which can be bent over with the tip and but both stuck in the earth for example
  9. A long shot but is anybody travelling from berkshire to southwales and have the facility to bring along a vehicle either on - board in person or by trailer. many thanks Dean
  10. We've employed a couple of guys that have been on this course - from an employers point of view, and becuase we are AA approved - having lots of tickets is good but its experience that realy ticks the boxes for most employers. part of the course is an intro to the ISA cert - no one i know has actually carried this theory side of things through - which is dissapointing.
  11. Ive found one of our LA's to be fussy about removal under the DDD and there have been recent changes to the DDD scheme. The reason for the fussiness being that they are trying to inforce replacements. But as others have said in this instance, if documented I would say that you would be safe in continuing.
  12. need to sort the brakes on the tw 150 - before I open it up - does anyone have a part number / shoe size so I can have them to hand. many thanks
  13. In the car park area of a local wedding venue there is a Very large mature Beech. It was in decline, merip present all around base 3 years ago - I wrote a letter noting the tree and the potential future problems. I was brushed off by the manager saying that if there was a problem then their "industrial gardening team" would see to it. Its still there and now very dead. Now I just tend to leave them, doing anything else has never done me any good. If I knock the door I feel wrong, I advertise so let somebody else tell them its dangerous and maybe they will give me a call.
  14. Every now and again I wonder the same thing - Is it worth it...... Not quite come to a conclusion yet. I love the work we do in the winter 'cause its in the wood, away from people - but I dont normally get the chance to enjoy it while Im in there.
  15. Thought Id posted this but seems I didnt press the "Post reply" buton doh- thought I'd post my effort - decided to spruce up our old entec when we had two machines running. took it apart, wire wheel, sand paper. a bit of welding needed here and there. repainted the chassis and built back up. Did it over a couple of weeks with evenings and weekends. rollered the new paint on (surprisingly good finnish). a good quality undercoat then timberwolf orange paint - code recieved from tw. unfortunately, shortly after this I decided to just run the one machine and sold it on. after followed by the only before I can find
  16. I think it can be, but as said contacts would be everything. its also often an optional extra - that in the current climate is a luxury that people avoid if they can. This has meant companies with their own grinder can use it as a cheap/ add on sale or may secure the tree work on the basis that they can do the stump cheaply. The market seams to be different in my kneck of the woods. Our local stump busters is Cardiff and says he's had the worst 3 years ever.
  17. took the guys for a rec climb one afternoon last week. pic from the top of a welly - a smidge over 100 ft. and another from a sitka climbed LY.
  18. Ive had 265 75 r16. Cooper stt's not bfg's dont know if that helps - but some of the numbers match
  19. I'm sorry if ive missed something but isnt privet semi evergreen - its winter - some leaves have dropped off, but the cambium is green. If it was me i would go and speak to her in person. I would probably offer to replace any dead plants and spray the weeds at my own cost. But I would charge labour. I would make sure she knew that i was not admitting liability and that this action was taken as a good will guesture only. If i felt some tlc was required (ie general maintenance, weeding and watering)I would give her a quote for maintaining and looking after the hedge for her.
  20. hi all unfortunately the company i use when we need a large stumpgrinder has let me down. If anyone has availabilty for the 1st and 2nd of March. good access for something like a rayco 1625 give me a call I need to re - arrange urgently to not let client down.
  21. pussy willow buds yesterday. cherry blossom today neath area south wales
  22. If I found out you had got your mate to give me a call and wasted some of the little time I get to spend with my family or with a potential customer, so that you can undercut me by 10% i would not be a happy chappy and nor would any of the firms in your area - so dont go down this route. Remember - you may want or need to work alongside them in the future. assuming you havent any overheads such as insurance surely £100 - £150 should cover it for you and still be worthwhile for your friend.
  23. I think the difficult aspect would be the soil micro flora and associated conditions, these woodlands have to some extent become possible after hundreds of years of colonisers before them altering the soil conditions to make such woodlands exist. the nearest thing to this sort of project i can think of would be hedgerow translocations such as those carried out for new roadways and other development. from those Ive spoken to who have experience of this - success is not guaranteed - not necesarily down to the fine details such as soil conditions/ micro climates/habitats but the bigger details such as time of year too.
