  1. wow. :scared1:what action was taken with those? fell or habitat stump perhaps?
  2. price seems to be a key factor with the fc then, by the sounds of it:sneaky2: has anyone found that standard of work to important to them?
  3. interesting: guess they use the rate given as a bench mark thanks buzz, something to keep in mind. think i'll give them our standard rates then, suck it and see.
  4. thanks gibbon, hope you dont think its too personal a qeustion:blushing:...... how much is that? I'm charging around 350 a day (for a 2 man team but depending on skill level required) how do you think that stacks up competitively speaking?
  5. thanks for replying so quickly gibbon. and thanks for the info the work i'm looking at seems to be a small scale localised thing - rather than a contract out to tender - where they call us in, as and when, spreading the work around a group of contractors depending on locality and work spec. had a meeting with the guy involved today - we just have to meet their criteria -which looks fairly standard and go from there. have to give a day rate as an example and although i know what that is for domestic work - i havent got any experience with the FC:001_unsure:
  6. Hi guys anybody have any experience of carrying out arb work for the forestry commision? whats the going rate for a team of: 1) team of two guys plus chipper 2) team of 4 " " " carrying out roadside, track and pathway maintenance - ie everything from clearing/ brush cutting scrub to aeshetic or safety orientated aerial or other arb work?
  7. good luck to us:thumbup:
  8. we started up about a year and half ago when i moved to a new area - for the missus so didnt have an local links besides family and a few friends this way. i always wanted to compete on quality rather than price - my thinking being that theres always someone that can do it cheaper - especially at the moment when everyone out of work seems to picking up a chainsaw and hedge trimmer for a bit of lopping and topping:glare: so sign writing, good stationary, full compliance with all the legislation etc, even the little things like a good answerphone message and profesional appearance at all time - especially during quotes. like you say having an image to promote is important. I guess its sometimes luck but i often win quotes on this basis alone - i'm told so by the clients. there will always be customers who quible on prices and give the old sharp intake in breath when given what most would see as a sensible price. we're doing well, i know we have taken a lot of work off the competition, but theres more to be had - just got to work out how to get to it:drool:
  9. nah i got them cause of my charm.... where do you spnd your advertising buget rupe? say for example % newspaper % leaflet etc?
  10. i know what your saying...... hence the "in a manner of speaking". But if you want to look at it in a profit/loss actual kind of a way then no, your right. the ad. comes to about a third of the total £ for the jobs - and i can always hope that they will contribute to the word of mouth - staying positive.
  11. Will give it a go - spose its a good way of makig a few more contacts too. all good
  12. thanks CTS - good tip (no pun intended) what department is the best to speak to? parks and estates?
  13. Hi guys is there any one in swansea or neath areas storing chip for any use and wants the occasional load? I'm trying to save on fuel and time travelling to and from our yard on larger jobs in those areas. Besides we have no way of loading it onto lorries for resale and hand shoveling for customers is a ball ache!
  14. had a couple of calls in the last few weeks from yellow pages, which is a nice supprise given the number of people in the book - both of them had looked through untill finding someone local ("supporting the local economy") so it's paid for itself in a manner of speaking haven't heard anything about the book going bust - maybe shows the way people are thinking with their advertising tho?
  15. Hi Dean, was going to post a similar thread, asking what the best resource for learning fungi info was. when i first started getting interested in trees i remember somebody telling me to learn to I.D 5 (for example) common trees along with their charactistics (growing requirements etc). guess its a good way of building on fungi knowledge too.
  16. I like it: wonder if it still knocking around?
  17. South wales (swansea area) think its an all or nothing with yell. got to be at the top of the list for any attention- no point in paying to be at the bottom. although saying that i did a quote this evening for a guy who said he searched untill he found somebody local.
  18. Ive never found my local news paper any good. comunity magasines and parish mags on the other hand: great! Ive had one call from the yellow pages (smallish add) since it was issued in May, but to be honest there must be 7 pages of guys under "tree work" so makes you wonder what the point is. I've noticed that the ammount of competition on the internet has exploded in this area just recently!
  19. I think it sounds like the consensus is to avoid it then. maybe google ads are a better way of going? anyone hadgood results from their sponsored listings?
  20. thanks for the replies guys, yeah get the feeling its all in the sales pitch:thumbdown: any one got any positives about yell? I'm getting plenty of work word of mouth, but it could be better - just trying to raise our profile - the difficulty is in finding the right way?
  21. Hi guys, I'm sure that this topic has come up before but.... what are your opinions on yell.com's priority / sponsored listings (the ones that place you at the top of their search page)? We all know that they are expensive (the particular one i'm looking into is around £2k) but the main thing is: Are they going to get you any calls? Any better alternatives? thanks:001_smile:
  22. Hi Clueless, if we can be of any help give us a call, based nr swansea. may be able to offer a few options or just some free advice. Arborum ltd 01792 864053 regards Dean
