  1. just sell mixed loads unfortunately - ive found few people want softwood alone and can often be sniffy about mixed loads. As long as you are honest about the product you sell and it is dry they will come back for more.
  2. Ask the customer what they want - if you dont think its the best thing for the tree then offer them advice. they may or may not want to take it - this resolves the dilemma. Realistically you will have two options - recut to previous points or reshape what growth is there - this may include a thinning out to reduce/shape.
  3. I have no idea on the prices of milled wood sorry:blushing: but from a business point of view why not ask firewood prices for it by the cube? - that would be my thinking - especially as i love beech for firewood
  4. I agree with Stephen competition is fierce - so it all comes down to your determination - good luck. £700 for 30+31 is about right.
  5. does anybody know what state the japanes knotweed is in - in machynlleth? have had a request to go and visit some but down here for most of it ts a bit late unless sheltered. thanks
  6. We have gone down the AA route, also constructionline and chas. Dont think there is any adantage really - tho' it may galvanise contracts you already have. IMHO it woud be wrong to do it thinking it will open doors for you - business just isnt that easy. Theres no body else AA approved near us although i think that will change now. In my case, to a certain degree, I did it to show that I could. most H&S concious companies we have worked fo still want to see everything just short ofa birth certificate anyway so as long as you can provide the relevant paper work....
  7. no worries - good luck we will all be waiting for pics of shiny new kit now!
  8. just contact the relevant accreditation co and ask to apply - an email should be enough to get the ball rolling. then just give them all the information they require (you will have most of this place already) and pay the fee for being assessed etc and bingo.
  9. Never had to do this but if its within the quarter you may be advised to pick up where you left off i wouldnt have thought it would be a problem for them - if you use an accountant i would probably just ask them to make it so and forget about the hassle.
  10. £300 for bulk orders of 4 cm, this summer, we were charging £250 mixed loads
  11. not sure what his set up is yet but he's based on my doorstep. will be meeting him this week to see if we can sort something out. Dont like the idea of having someone following us around to collect the logs we leave behind on every job but for the big stuff that would be nice sometimes.
  12. Thanks Tim - still got you in mind for that project we spoke about too. think the best approach for me may be to stack store then sell in bulk. that way i can keep myself a little pile to keep our log burner going too alternativey would be lovely to swap timber for use of his yard for storing vehicles etc
  13. we used to use blue tarp (rips easy but doubles up to catch trimmings) - then we used builders bags for rakings etc - free but heavy if overfilled - can be awkward to keep open etc - oh and still rip recently started to use plastic black bins - cant overfill, dont rip open, they do break occasionally but are cheeper than tarp anyway (though arent as versatile for catching trimmings) think they are excellent
  14. good luck, we all started somewhere- difficult to build a business based on weekend work only as as your client list builds your waiting time would become huge. work for family and friends wont keep you going forever. also - whoever takes you on to train you up to be in competition with them isnt going to very happy after spending time and money on you.
  15. dont know where to post this - firewood or business management section? so thought id stick it in here to get some varied replies does anyone work alongside a firewood merchant and have any arrangement/ deals with arrisings etc? how does it work? any bad experiences? we've been approached by a local guy intending to expand his business next season. He's looking for a source of wood from a list of customers he has who want trees removed. I.e a list of leads in return for the wood from the job if we get it. Its got me thinking as we have tons of wood lying in cord lengths ready for us to get a processor in. dipped our toe in the water this autumn selling logs and already sold out (only approx 30 cube) so i would say that its got to be worth our while.
  16. we marketed chipper hire with op for approx six months while we ran two chippers, vans etc. Didnt find a very large market for it, though we did generate some work from it I didnt see it as a worthwhile part of our business. and difficult to juggle alongside our main contracting as these sort of jobs often needed doing tommorow not in 6 weeks time those domestic clients that enquire about the service were generally the sort that did it themselves to save money so this is a consideration when looking at what you require for a day rate. also in most cases chip needed to be removed from site so is another consideration. you may end up with a tipper, chipper and a chainsaw to process the odd branch or bit of timber. think i worked it out that we required a min of £35/hour to break even on our running costs
  17. was looking at this option in the summer of last year ended up going for a tw the reason being dealer support although i have heard that greenmech now have a dealer this way
  18. had a rear prop fail at the uj on my 90. removed it and it would drive with the diff locked (-as far as home) wouldnt drive in normal 4wd

    team leader?

Well weve managed to raise awareness of the industry and perhaps created a monster. As we all know - theres loads of money in tree surgery lol but thats a debate for another thread.

    team leader?

Will do. Makes you realise how much costly training is required to cover all bases.... Didnt realise how much training we had put us all through till I started writing it down..... and theres more to go yet. experience will be the key to this position tho' as theres a glut of newly "fully qualified" people around trying to get into the industry at the mo (good luck to them)
  21. Davies implements still have one for hire, i think. Their prices are on their website - though there not usually completely up to date. Has anyone out there used the 2xs+carry?
  22. Had been thinking of putting up polly tunnels as Ive got a bit of space - but as always ive concentrated on the arb work and run out of time. might just process into a big heap on pallets so as not to mix it with the stuff in the shed and cover it for now ready to go in when its empty.
