  1. just a jockey wheel clamp I would expect its fine. I just needed to use the right kit with the right bolt in the first place rather than making it up as i went along. as soon as i knew that the turns per inch on the tap i used wouldnt match the diameter of the hole created it was obvious that i'd messed it up and would have to find another quick solution. should have just waited till the week when i could have bought the correct kit rather than rushing it. ta for all the help tho
  2. If its something that i know is out of my capabilities before I have a go its normally better to get a profesional in to tackle it - normally quicker and cheeper in the long run Its always difficult to get anything done without having to wait - especially for the little jobs that arent worth their time (and on a weekend in the snow) Plus we just dont have the time to take the chipper out of action and to somewhere to get these things done in the week. I'm just too impatient and have to give it ago myself. besides taking it somewhere and handing it over to some guy with grinder and no particular attachment to the machine probably would have made me cringe way more. ahh well, sorted now
  3. they hire out the self powered hakki pilke 2xs plus carry which is the sort of hing we coul do with unortunately - rung them yesterday to book it for a couple of days and they've just sold it - being picked up tommorow. doh
  4. Hi guys anyone in the south wales area have a processor to either hire or to come in and process our wood for us. was hoping to get ontop of it this year and havent had the chance. (we dont have the facility to run pto) thanks:thumbup: Dean
  5. thanks treewolf popped out today to try and get hold of the right kit to complete the job but couldnt find imperial sizes. nearest option was m14 fine (for spark plugs) didnt think it was worth drilling and tapping for m16. ended up buying some m12 threaded bar and drilling stright through the frame and out the other side to get it sorted for monday. but thanks for all the help
  6. thanks guys
  7. i guess I could find this number out then and take it to a fastners then and still use the helicoil then.
  8. god knows - does it say on the tap?
  9. ooh bugger - i get you CJ the bolt was (or atleast looks like a 10 mm /m10) went to 3/8ths as that was what was available in the kit. not much of an engineer i'm afraid so learning by my mistakes.
  10. ahh good idea tree quip might give a couple of bolts a try first though specially if anyone has any idea/ experience in what might fit. (especially as i dont have a welder handy)
  11. the bolt is behind a plate welded to the frame so inaccessable without grinding this off first. didnt want to go there as the frame is in lovely condition. (timberwolf 6 inch) the alternative is for me to take the helicoil to a fasteners on monday and get one that fits it - but wanted to get it sorted sooner. so sounds like the size given on the tap takes the down sizing of the sleeve into account.
  12. thanks justme un-fortunately the bolt just worked itslef out whilst driving along (just one of the many niggly probs ive had with the chipper since i bought it) the second bolt appears to be bent and probably wasnt the correct size to start with. the helicoil kit ive got is one i got hold off the father in law. the thread that ive drilled and tapped using the kit so far looks good to go if i can find out what size bolt will do the job. ta
  13. Hi guys any one out there used helicoil to fix a thread before? one of the captive nuts that hold the bolt for the jockey wheel to the frame of the chipper had somehow become damaged - so in my wisdom re-tapped it using the 3/8 tap provided in the kit to 3/8 in order to insert a helicoil..... then realised I dont have the right size bolt - duhh does anyone know if i can just use a 3/8 bolt to finnish off the process without inserting the helicoil or does the sizing given on the tap allow for the down sizing of the hole size that would happen if it were inserted - so i actually need a 1/2 inch bolt? hope that makes sense to somebody Ta:blushing:
  14. if the industry can somehow self regulate and decide on a simple soluton then i think it can/will avoid beurocracy. or at least hold it off. the key is simplicity.... the system jayvee describes IMO is the way to go. any seller abusing the system in some way will merely loose his custom - wherever there is any level of regulation there will always be those that cheet it. personally: We dont do a lot of fire wood but when i do I load the back of the wagon to a certain height (top of ali boards). the volume is measured at 1.25 cube however when asked I sell it at 1 cube mtre loose stacked. i feel it goes someway compensates or at least addresses the air gaps

    Unimog

i like the shape of the u900 is the 900 just an earlier model? I like the idea of the simplicity of the 900 - but do they / can they have the same uses pto applications etc?

    Unimog

hmm lots to consider then. Don't fancy the sound of those sort of repair costs.

    Unimog

thanks guys. the mog would be a second motor so probably not getting as much use as the landy. Hopefully this would keep wear and tear down to a degree and the landy can be usefull if the mog is broken i would need to look into finding an appropriate mechanic for it. (i like to get stuck in but time is usually an issue). what are the nitty gritty costs like mpg, road tax (is this req?), insurance. driving licence requirements? pto chippers seem relatively inexpensive. Thanks again

    Unimog

I know a few of you on here are in the know about running Unimogs. what are the day to day or annual costs associated with running a unimog (say a u1200ag) with pto chipper Vs a landy tipper towing a chipper. I know that they are very different motors but as this is what we run at the mo the comparison would be usefull. quite a lot of our work is off road so the capabilities of both these vehicles are usefull - though the landy being more apt for the Mrs jones's hedge type jobs. thanks for any input:001_smile:
  19. no prob minus 3 here at the mo
  20. got ours in october definately moves the air around without feeling a draft. But because you dont realy notice the flow of air it seems like its not doing the job. probably not worth the purchase if you only have a fire roaring in the evening for the effect. But over the period of a couple of days we've noticed that more of the house is warm when it wouldnt have normally been if we wern't to put the CH .

  22. I know of someone who uses Bsc after their name in their advertising - I feel that If you are going to add BSc for example to the end of your name on your business cards or marketing I think that its important that its a degree relevant to arb and not in media studies (no offence to any one who studied media). If it isnt relevant then it could be percieved as being slightly misleading - and perhaps a little awkward when the client asks where you studied forestry or arb at degree level
  23. I'll probably go for a splitter rather than a processor (mainly because of storage). tho I am tempted to just have one big blast and get on top of the wood pile with a hired processor as 2 or 3 days should easily do it. does any one out there have any opinions or use either of these splitters - think i will be ordering a forest master if not. Ta
  24. hi steve - thanks yes spotted it myself - though not sure if they are hiring out. Was going to give them a call today for prices but didn't get round to it.
  25. Hi guys. I'm looking into a trailed log splitter for the yard. i'm considering either the forest master 17ton or the MTD lawnflite 550 (25ton) at roughly £900 and £1900 respectedly theres a huge price difference and while I appreciate that this will probably be represented in the build quality and the extra split capacity etc is the MTD realy twice as well made? does anyone have either of these machines, and have any thoughts or comments on them. Im also considering a small toweable log processor as ive been hording and stacking in lengths - considering the hakki 2x s+ carry - anybody have a rough idea on price. anyone on here hire out a processor in south wales? (i havent got the ability to run nything requiring pto) Cheers Dean
