  1. This may be of some help (if you haven't looked at it already): Arboriculture | RFS I know the RFS Cert and the AA Tech Cert can be done via distance learning. They are the two mid range quals that I'm au fait with. I would say that the RFS Cert would be a good option for you as your previous Hort qual shows that the theory side should be no problem to you and the practical parts of the Cert can be done on a modular basis. I know that the ISA offers something as well, but I don't know much about it
  2. For your, ahem, cough, daughter, huh? Sure you're planning a bit of a makeover for the truck Al?
  3. Cornus mas then? (slight hint of grasping at straws sneaking in here). That's definately opposite and it ticks all of your other ident' features. Although at this time of year they are easy to spot as they are starting to come into flower.
  4. Do I get a gold star, Sir? I've never take much notice of the twigs and buds as the bark and form is so distinctive on the Parrotias. If, er, that's what it is...
  5. It might be tempting when I've seen and done all our beautiful country has to offer. Which will be never ! Plus I'm pale and pasty enough to have to use sunblock all year 'round here; I think I'd fry down in Oz.
  6. Where are you based Stump? I know Gristwood and Toms are looking for a load of staff at the moment, if you haven't tried them already. Good luck for the continued job hunting
  7. ... And if he's not on a budget? I get by - just - with a hammer, DBH tape, 5m tape, a combi spanner used as a pokey thing, a bit of chalk and a digi camera (for using ratio method of tree height measuremement if it's critcal) and lots and lots of practise. Plus various other low cost bits and pieces that stay in the murky botom of my survey bag. You can have all the best gear on the market, but it's still only as good as the person using it.
  8. ... Because that would be too sensible! There is a cap on the amount of fish landed, regardless of who is bringing them ashore.
  9. I've been following the series on Ch4 over the past week. It's been showing disgraceful fishing practises that I have long been aware of and I'm glad that it is now being shown to such a wide audience. The fishing quota has to be a contender for one of the most absurd and wasteful reg's EVER. Grrrr!
  10. I bet you actually know what it is and you're just teasing us, aren't you? My (educated, of course!) guess would be Persion Ironwood - Parrotia persica.
  11. I signed up to the site the article is taken from and done a general search under "tree".... I think I've got more than one afternoon's reading ahead of me!!!
  12. Good call If you've seen nothing that immediately alarms you about the condition of the tree, why don't you ring the ivy and then reasses when you have the opportunity to see it's structure more clearly? If they are long term customers of yours, I'm sure they will appreciate you not rushing in and doing (possibly) unecessary work.
  13. I haven't seen the films, but having looked at the rest of the 'site I think the "Wild Trees ... " book is going to be on my wish list. Good find
  14. Not covered by Hi Hedge Regs. Even though it may be a hedge. Clear ?
  15. Why are you all so pro removal??? I thought we were in the days of enlightenment and conservation ? If there are no H&S issues and the customer wants to retain the tree, suggesting anything else just to make a bit of money is very short sighted as they won't come back to. Think of the bugs, bats and beasties lurking in all that ivy . Do you reaaaallly want to make them homeless?
  16. My instant thought was Jew's Ear, but having looked a bit closer they are quite degraded parasols. Have you tried looking through the Fungi Directory? I'm sure there are a couple of experts on here somewhere that will be along shortly to share their knowledge
  17. Why are you suggesting felling? Is there major decay or defects that you haven't mentioned? Have you carried out a climbing inspection? If the customers want to retain the tree and there are no H&S implications in doing so, then surely that should be doing, not it's removal
  18. It all depends on the way the LA breaks up it's departments. The Arb Section of the LA's I've worked for don't deal with High Hedges as they come under the Legal department. The TO's don't even take queries as all correspondence bypasses them. Leaving plenty of time for all those emergency leaves - in - gutters calls
  19. Thanks - a bit of revision needed for me I thought that the quoted height was the minimum that the LA could enforce, not the height they had to enforce. Is that right?
  20. If you mean what height is a land owner legally obliged to keep their hedge at... well, there isn't a legal limit! Are you thinking about the High Hedge / Anti Social behaviour Act 2000 and something, possibly 5? That gives the relevant LA powers to enforce a maintenance order to keep a hedge (a minimum of two trees that are predominently evergreen spp) to a height of 6' or 2m.
  21. At least you haven't reached the point where you can't go out and act like a hooligan coz' your leathers have mysterious shrunk in the wardrobe
  22. I hope pajamaman had a written site specific RA done for that Are there any chances of the LA recouping the money for the emergency removal and replanting? I don't think there could be a clearer case of criminal damage to Council property! And does your LA use CAVAT for incidents like this btw?.
  23. I've gone off on a complete tangent and I'm doing a bit of part time bar wenching work. It's not ideal - I don't drink so there aren't even any perks! - but it's pocket monies. And it's a heck of a lot warmer than surveying at this time of year
  24. It's amazing what you can do with cable ties and duct tape Yeah, got it as standard and put the RCV11 replica body kit on it, Dream Machine paint job, MHP carbon can... And can you take a guess at what happened the first time i took it out? Binned the darn thing! Doh!!!
