  1. TO be fair, yorkshireman, there were a large number of failings in many areas of the met during that investigation.
  2. Is that shed loads of fruiting bodies up the trunk? I cant quite make it out.
  3. Just watching this documentary on Stephen Lawrence. I am lost for words at the bigotry that exists in this world that could make people think that it is remotely acceptible to treat other humans the way racists do, and also the reaction of the authorities at the scene which stemmed from the institutional racism that exists. The whole thing makes me very very sad indeed.
  4. As above. On top of that, it polishes to a VERY fine finish, and is extremely durable too.
  5. Its partly that, but I liked the way that before you could just browse through, now I see threads, click on them ,then have to click on another link, and I find that on the rare occasion that someone has bothered to put a pic up, quite often if i click on the pics nothing happens. It just doesnt seem to 'work' for me.
  6. I have to say I hate the arbtrader thing compared to the classifieds as it was. i also understand that its here to stay.
  7. Wind died down, sun shining and rain stopped. For how long i dont know......

    Otters

Beautiful Matt. You're very lucky! I was fortunate enough to see one in the Camel Estuary in north cornwall a few years ago. I saw a silver flash, which was the huge fish (probably bass) it had caught. We watched it for about five minutes before it swam off.
  9. Good set of pics there Paul, and welcome to the forum. I am not sure that this thread is the best place for them though, being as its a teamANB's thread about landrovers lol. You may want to send a moderator a private message to ask them to move it for you. (you can do this by clicking on a moderators name, on any of their posts, adn choosing the 'send private message' option from the menu that drops down.)
  10. I should hope he did at those prices!!!!!!!
  11. If lime is a problem for log merchants, have you guys not considered flogging it to mills/ turners/ carvers etc. You could sell cheap, but surely that would be better than splitting it and just having to sit on it? And as for you burning yew huck.....well really! :lol:I can get rid of yew so easily round here that it would be sacrilege to burn it:biggrin:
  12. I dont see the problem......I mean he WAS wearing a Stihl jacket.....And he had a top handled saw.....he MUST have known how to do it....surely?
  13. Well that tree was diagnosed as having ramorum....
  14. Black marks.......oozing, like this?
  15. If it just says sp. then usually they mean p. infestans IME, which isnt the end of the world, certainly not like p.ramorum. I cut a large limb off a hom oak a couple of years back with extensive levels of p.infestans on it, and to my knowledge it hasnt returned on that tree.
  16. My card genuinley wasnt working Bob.
  17. SOunds a tad over-cautious perhaps, given that (I think) its the wrong time of year for phytopthera to be sporulating (the time it is infectious). However I am unsure myself of how effective propellar is on tools...I mean unless you bathe your saws' parts in the stuff surely you will miss some anyway? Your theory on cross-contamination may have something in it though. What benefit is there to pollarding an infected tree though? What sp of photopthera is it?
  18. The relevance of the bark roughness is a theory of why the trees dont get hit for about 15-20 years. It could well be cambium, it could also be that the beetles apparently have a flight height of about 4-5 metres I have also read, and that until the tree reaches this height, which coincides with the bark losing its smoothness, it is not susceptible to the beetle. I think that there is probably a certain amount of indecision about the causes......
  19. Scolotyd beetle, scolytus scolytus lays eggs under the bark, (as soon as the bark gets rough enough for the beetle to take hold, coinciding with a height of tree of about 20-ish feet), and introduces a microfungus [usually] ophiostoma novo-ulmi. The tree then closes the xylem vessels in an attempt to contain the spread of the fungus, thus strangling itself.
