  1. YOu can hire a 6" machine for £89 from brandons and a plant etc, and an operator must be worth at least £120 a day just to stand there shoving sticks into a machine. TBH i wouldnt get involved with chip disposal- let your customer have the headache. If they need you to do the removal too then price for a tipper hire too maybe?
  2. I dont get the heater issue- I have a wonderful heater in my defender. If you are struggling then leave a bit of ply in front of the rad, and get rid of the viscous fan (pre TD5 of course). The viscous fan will help with power and fuel consumption too. I know a few tdi owners who have put electric fans in, and never use them even towing in the summer.
  3. Or he isnt greedy? I have met the lad in question, and worked with him. He has his head screwed on, and is happy with his price, and isnt a toatl newbie and works like stink. Personally i think he ought to charge more, but it obviously works for him. I rent my machine with myself for minimum £200/ day for a 9" vermeer.
  4. Well done mate! Good thread too- I am sure there are many 'newbies' on arbtalk who are, or soon are to be, in the same boat as you.
  5. I was recently dragged into a customers neighbourly dispute over a leylandii hedge. It seems that only after all courses of mediation betwen concerned parties have been exhausted that a court will get involved. It is then looked at on a case by case basis, taking into account the distance from the house, the effect on the amount of light getting to the house, etc etc. Apparently the commonest outcome is that the owner of a hedge who refuses to be neighbourly will have an ASBO awarded to them, but both parties are usually told to sort their differences out first, the court only getting involved as a last resort. There also appears to be quite a variation in the approach taken by councils across the country.

  8. Someone really hated that poor tree- looks like it had had a failed attempt at being ring barked already.
  9. Like who ade? I have yew in lengths/ planks!
  10. Cheers guys- I searched for ages earlier but never found those links. Ill have a look see!
  11. As in the title Dave- F3L1011. Reuben the mega mechanic is coming down from Plymouth, but I would still like a goobers at a manual.
  12. I have managed to dislodge the linkage inside the engine that connects the throttle handle to the govenor rack. I am told it is a very simple job, but need some answers and noone is open til monday and I need to go to work....I think it hapened when i put the injector pumps back in.
  13. Thought so windfall. I have relations up there.
  14. Billy- are you using both ends of your lifeline to climb with? Thus having 2 anchorpoints available at all times? If so you dont need your sidestrop, as the 'spare' end of your lifeline will be used when cutting. If not, then i whiolly agree with Rupes comment, and in answer to your question, I very very rarely cut without my sidestrop- only when i already have 2 anchor points, such as when branch walking etc.
  15. I cant believe you heathens are suggesting grinding out that root ball:001_rolleyes:. Cut the tree up as you like- thats all rubbish- and clean up the roots. Try and keep as big a lump off it as you can handle/ move/ get out of the garden for tuning/ carving!
  16. Heres a couple more pics of the 6' wide throat and the blades.
  17. As TCD correctly states, the tractor is powering the whole rig through the PTO shaft, running to a huge hydraulic pack at the front end of the unit. Buzzsurgeon is right- the fendt, a 930 vario IIRC, is way underpowered for that chipper, even though that tractor is chipped up past 400bhp, again IIRC!! It nearly stalled when they first engaged the PTO, and at one point the operator was a bit keen, and nearly stalled it whilst feeding it. Having said that, although the in-speed may appear slow, the huge amount of chip it produced was constant, regardless of how fast the machine was loaded, so although it appeared to be struggling all the time, it was producing ALOT of chip.
  18. Lovely old saws mate. Do you mind me asking where you are? You have a very interesting manx avatar?
  19. Anyone here know this engine? Mine is having a few problems......
  20. Try living here- scorrier woods was the first hotspot. There is aklot of misinformation being spread about this pathogen- as much because those that are investigating it are in the dark themselves as the fact that like every disease of this virulence- be it ramorum or foot and mouth or BSE- there is a huge amount at stake if the true extent gets out into public knowledge. Those investigating it (Ann Payne and her cronies essentially) are themselves on a steep learning curve about his pathogen, which also aids the (unintentional) spread of misinformation. I have seen this on probably 20 different species of tree, in all sorts of locations- including on a southern beech in a large national trust garden. One of the original investigators in this country was round at my place a couple of weeks back (his missus is a customer of my missus') and he was basically saying that nobody really knows anytyhing definitive about ramorum yet. They are still finding new ways for it to spread on an almost daily basis. This isnt over, and its not helped by people chipping the infected plants, or DEFRA allowing the like of me to receive infected sawlogs under licence, so long as we agree to burn all arisings on site and clean equipment after use.
  21. As above- cow dung or yoghurt. Just tell your customer that is their choice, or they can have shiney new stone. It doesnt take that long if not in too exposed a ocation. Done it on slate rofs more than once with success.
