  1. My first attempt at swedish log candle this evening using a piece of dead elm, felled about 6 weeks ago (standing dead for a good few years). Pushed a fire-lighter in to the top and a few bits of kindling over that once it was lit. Quite windy so kept going out but then re-igniting it self. Turned it round a few times to get an even burn The last picture taken about 40 mins after lighting
  2. As of 1st september my prices will be going up from £100 to £105 per cubic metre (all hardwood). Have some part-seasoned stuff to shift now at this years prices but it wont be around for long!
  3. If I'd had the time and appropriate transport I would have collected it. Don't give poplar such a bad name, especially on a public forum. I've sold it in the past (30T last year) and no complaints - as good as any softwood (pine/larch/spruce etc)! Poplar seasons really quickly and also makes excellent kindling
  4. NFU insured some of my timber as stock in the open (£2K worth i think)
  5. Wood burning Rayburn 345W and a villager logburner in living room (3 bed semi). This does all our cooking, mains pressure hot water and about 9 rads. Both appliances heat a thermal store providing all our hot water requirements. No gas or oil but we get through about 12-15 cubic metres of logs a year
  6. How long does it take and how much does it cost to become a qulified chimney sweep - any ideas?
  7. Same way as any other wood Once processed, ie split into logs or billets, stack it off the ground so the wind can push air around it and cover the top to keep the rain off, simples! I believe airflow is the main key to seasoning firewood. I don't store any of mine in a barn type situation so couldn't comment on how good it would be. But what I do know is oak or beech billets will season in under 6 months (down to 20%mc) if stacked on pallets in a windy place with a tarp covering the top.
  8. I have about 15 cube of part-seasoned hardwood and am offering to customers at this winter's prices (£100/cube) in order to get it shifted. Hopefully it will go soon as I am also telling them it will be going up in price in June (5% increase).
  9. It isn't just the wood that may release moisture, the air trapped inside the bag will produce its own condensation especially if left in the sun or where it is subject to temperature changes. Kiln dried wood still contains some moisture (8% or so) so unless you are going to vacuum seal each bag then I would have thought you may get some condensation forming at some point. All depends how long the kindling is going to be stored in the plastic bag
  10. 25T (freshly felled oak or beech) produces about 35 cubic metres seasoned logs. We aim to get £100/cubic metre so would be looking for £3500. This is seasoned mind you, which obviously means it wont be 25T when sold on as it will have been reduced from 45 down to 20% moisture content
  11. aim high to start with, go for £100 min per cubic metre. If it doesn't shift you can always reduce it through special/introductory offers. Pricing it low to start with will produce problems when you want to put the price up after realising what all your costs are of producing and delivering the final product. Mine is £100/cube at moment but will be going up next autumn. In the process of contacting all customers to let them know that - and offering loads for them to keep all summer at this year's prices (part seasoned oak). Hope that makes sense and helps!

    Poplar

As Peter says, split into billets is best option, stack and cover. I did some 2 years ago (over 30T) and was seasoned within 6 months. Never tried charcoal though, think it will produce very light charcoal and will burn quite quickly
  13. mine does just over a metre but cost over £3k, available for hire with operator!
  14. ours will be going up next winter from £100 to a minimum of £105/cubic metre possibly £110 depending how much cost of fuel goes up by

  18. I have been researching log sheds for a few customers and wasn't overly impressed with what you got for the money you pay out. So I had a go at making one just to see whether or not they would be worth doing from a business perspective. Made from 6"x1" and 3"x2" tanalised wood with a felt roof, volume of 2.16 cubic metres (internal 1.8mx0.8mx 1.5-1.6m high). They can take 10 barrow bags of logs comfortably (2 cube) Price would be around £230-£250 but would include delivery and putting it up, slab bases at extra cost. Any thoughts/criticism (pref constructive) welcome I have two retail outlets in mind for selling them pus a website

    Poplar

Softwood generally refers to coniferous (cone-bearing trees) Hardwood refers to broad-leaved mainly deciduous trees. The relative "hardness" of the wood is not a specific indicator as to whether a wood is hard or soft Softwood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  21. It's just for myself pus one named driver, fully comp. Sounds like a reasonable price then. Thak you people
  22. Time to get some insurance quotes for 54 plate L200 double cab warrior, for firewood business use. Any one recommend any good/inexpensive companies. My existing insurers (A Plan ) have sent a renewal quote (£486), was just wondering if any one else with pick up truck has any good or bad experiences with any particular insurers. Had a quote off NFU (they do my PL and EL) but they wanted at least another £150! Cheers guys Dave
  23. Un lucky mate Sounds like you did well to get most of your money back, but what a load of hassle. Build quality doesn't look good. This is one of the main reasons not to buy expensive kit off ebay.
  24. Out of interest, do the police or highways people have a contract with an arb company in each area? I'm not trying to get in on the business, just curious. I believe you can register/give your details to the police to be called out on emergenciy tree work. Not sure what the full details are, might be worth starting a new thread as I'm sure some one on the forum will know
  25. how about a man trap? [ame=http://www.metacafe.com/watch/173005/pool_prank/]Pool Prank - Video[/ame]
