  1. we only take timber for our own use from the wood to keep within felling regs (5 cubic metres per calendar quarter) All the timber for the firewood business is bought in apart from 3T pine that we take from the wood every year to convert in to kindling. The smaller the wood the pricier they are per acre, depending on tree species growing. You may find 100 acres sitka much cheaper than 50 acres Beech - although the chance of finding decent acreage of hardwood forest/woodland is pretty slim You are welcome to visit our wood some time if you wish!
  2. M60 near trafford closed due to lorry being blown over in high winds BBC News - Drivers warned as high winds batter England
  3. Very blowy in cheshire this morning. Had to remove this pine from a customers drive. Went round two diversions en-route due to trees acroos the roads because of the high winds. Also several orther trees down on private land
  4. Hi mate, this wood was in private ownership for about 15-20 years and has been sold on via woods4sale (- completely independent from woodlands.co.uk) based in Bangor. The previous owners have split it and sold it on - it's where our 21 acres is. Although you are right that it was under FC management for a good while before that. The one in the link is higher priced as it is freehold - all the other pieces were sold off as leasehold - but we have been given the chance to buy the lease if we want to, but at £450/acre can't afford it at the moment. As far as covenants go we haven't had any issues. as they don't prevent us from doing what we want/need to. The gates have always been locked as it was used for game shooting for a number of years and there have been a number of occassions when things have gone missing etc. As far as expensive goes, woodland prices have rocketed in the last few years and are likely to continue to do so - buy one ASAP!
  5. Guessing they are in Staffordshire http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/firewood-forum/25295-hardwood-wanted-staffordshire.html
  6. sorry forgot to put link on Woodland for sale Freedom Wood, Ruthin, North Wales 11.41 acres (approx) of Beech woodland for £65,000 (freehold) [#245].
  7. Have you looked here? We bought a 21 acre woodland from these guys, leashold wirth over 900 years left on it and no further payments to make.
  8. What's wrong with a bit of pop then?
  9. The guys that bought it weren't sure if it was purple heart or ekki but I reckon after some research it is purple heart
  10. I believe Silver Back has it right - Purple Heart (Peltogyne spp) the photos don't do it justice, amazing colours. They may have some rings left so am going to try and save them from being turned in to firewood! Thanks for having a go folks!
  11. I do have a good idea that it is a tropical hardwood that was obtained by a reclamation yard. They couldn't find any one to split it for firewood so took my Thor 13T petrol splitter along and got through it ok. Cut some in half with the 660 and had to re-sharpen after 3 cuts! Took longer to sharpen than to cut 3 pieces in half. As far as i know it is ................. answer later this evening!
  12. Any one recognise this wood?
  13. I use a Thor 13T petrol engine splitter. Have been doing a lot of English elm (dead and left standing for about 6-8 years) without any problem - splitting rings up to 20" diameter and 18" thick. Elm can still be really stringy and awkward to split but haven't had any problems with it. Also used it on some old rings of very well seasoned tropical hardwood. The client runs a reclamation yard and got these as part of a bigger job - been left lying around for a few years as they couldn't find anyone prepared to split it. Had to use a forklift to put them under the splitter but we got through them all. I think it's a wood called Ekki - but may be wrong. Will try putting some pics up in a new thread!
  14. We use Pine if we need to get the temperature up quickly as it burns hotter and responds quicker when altering the vents. Haven't had to fiddle around with the fire bricks other than changing between winter and summer settings. His Rayburn may need a good clean out or a service, and needs to check the airflow to make sure there is plenty of draw.
  15. We had Wood-only Rayburn (345W) fitted just over a year ago, can't fault it. Ours is connected to a thermal store (along with log-burner in living room). This produces central heating and mains pressure hot water for a 3 bed semi (9 rads). We do 99% of our cooking on it as well. Couldn't tell you how many logs we get through but it is probably around 15cubic metres, mixture of hardwood and softwood. The 345W will only take logs, not designed for any other fuel such as coal. We can get it up to 200 centigrade in a couple of hours from a cold start (have had it over 250 when not paying any attention to it). The great thing is, if you like cooking, the oven and hot-plates are on all the time. Gets a good clean out every four weeks so we let it go cold for this. If you have to buy in your logs it will be quite expensive to run.
  16. failing that send us a message with quantities you are looking for and location, try and provide a bit more detail otherwise you may not get many replies, good luck
  17. try looking on the directory UK directory of firewood suppliers
  18. Have seen some builders bags priced at £75 for seasoned hardwood!!
  19. I'll be at Sanbach Farmers Market - helping out on a meat stall, cooking and selling award winning burgers etc The Great Tasting Meat Company Be interested to have a chat with you and see how you get on! It's a good market!
  20. sold more in the first three days of feb than the whole of Jan. Most customers tended to buy extra just before xmas
  21. Selling off the nations forests was only to be expected when the conservatives got back in to government - they sold just about everything else off ! My main concern would be who is going to be responsible for overseeing the kind of national strategy needed for this country to produce its own timber and firewood as sustainable fuel.
  22. your pile of timber will be classed as waste and so you have to comply with Environment Agency Regulations with regard to transporting it etc. Would take a lot of time to sort through and end up with no where near 10T - and as already mentioned not ideal for woodburners or open fires. Would be a shame if you got to it one day and found some body had set light to it during the night!!!!
  23. I could take some but prob not all of it cheers dave
  24. Hi Isaac, thanks for the comments on the website. Barrow bags are from

BAG Supplies :: Packaging Suppliers covering the UK, Europe and North America

Good company to deal with and have a huge variety of bags and nets etc.

I tend to tip the bags out so can be re-used on a regular basis. Some people do ask if they can keep the logs in the bags but I try and put them off by telling them the logs will sweat and poss go mouldy. The vented ones are better for this but aren't as easy to handle. I have left bags once or twice and asked for a deposit of £10/bag. This more than covers the cost of a new bag but you have to buy a minimum of 50 at a time. I have 50 of each and keep them filled and stored in a poly tunnel ready for delivery. Hope that helps mate, Dave

  25. 1cube of dry seasoned mixed hardwood (95%oak at the moment) delivered in 5 barrow bags (0.2 cube each) is £100 here. Will be going up 5% next winter to take in to account increase costs of purchasing timber and rising fuel prices.
