  1. mine was a Husky 61 !! i soon moved on to get a 254xp oh how i wish i had never got rid of it !!
  2. thanks guys , im just looking at options at the moment , there is not a large call for huge amounts of softwood felling down here but never the less it is a market that i/we want to get into . what sort of money does the Patu 40 HE sell for second hand ?
  3. Hi guys not sure its in the right place but im looking for informtion and advice on the merits/disadvantages of using a Stroke processor as opposed to felling and snedding Many Thanks Dave
  4. As Steve said - it was merely a demonstration to show what the machine was capable of , lets be honest who would look at spending those sorts of money on a machine of that size when they have only seen it mulching through a bit of Gorse ? Often it is more cost effective for the client to have timber of this size mulched rather than the cost and time of harvesting what may oly be 30-40 trees of this size on a 100 acre site . i certainly dont know many contractors thatwould clear their own tracks into a huge/ long site so that they can pick out a a couple timber trailer loads of firewood !!
  5. Hi guys , im just looking for some advice and experiences from anyone thats used a Valtra 6850 in the woods , i have been offered the use of one from a mate but having not used one for anything other than verge mowing and using a chipper on road work . cheers in advance guys
  6. has anyone used the Moheda cranes fitted on a king post ?
  7. in short - Nope Would 1000 hours of driving an artic lorry entitle you to drive one and for your insurance to be valid lol
  8. If Im totally honest i don't see why i should spend what is normally the only decent break of the day doing my admin , i usually tend to spend an hour at the end of each day going through emails and allow one day per week for looking at jobs and writing quotes etc and inputting all of my receipts onto quick-books . As soon as a quote is accepted i will book it into the diary and print of a job sheet and RA and its placed in a dated to do pile. I had found that having apps, not having a paper diary and trying to do my admin when i have i moment on site did not work . It was far to easy to agree to someone or a client over the phone because i was busy and wanted to get on !! this didnt work and caused me to lose track of jobs and let the odd job slip through the net .
  9. I have burnt 1 bin load of logs this morning and will burn at least 1 more bit today , this is seasoned hardwood that has been sat in my wood shed since the summer , if i were burning kiln dried timber i would expect i would have to double that to keep the wood burner in all day . throughout the winter we rely on our woodburner t heat the house and provide hot water , im fairly sure if i were to try to do this with kil dried timber it would cost me more in 1 year than it would have cost me to have gas brought in from the road and have a boiler fitted
  10. There has been a massive change in the NPTC units and because NPTC are now a part of City&Guilds the unit titles (CS3,31,32,34 etc etc) have now changed to fall inline with the rest of City&Guilds . This should all become apparent to the industry workers after Christmas . Because there is a specific unit qualification for using a chainsaw in a MEWP then it is expected that persons carrying out such an activity should hold that certificate of competence
  11. unfortunately i didn't get the chance , i applied for a job just as the new head forester decided that operations were being scaled down . It is certainly something that i look back on and wih it had been different but on the other hand i have seen how the estate has changed and also the outhlook from the management has changed .
  12. Hi there , give a member called RowentheBruce on here a shout , he is just about to emigrate and has everything in place
  13. To use a chainsaw from a MEWP you should hold what is now called CS0974 - operation of a chainsaw from a MEWP , CS39 is not seen as appropriate training to operate a Chainsaw in a MEWP Hope this helps
  14. Ahhhh well im 29:blushing: so not far behind , I went strait from school into the tree surgery industry and spent bit of time in the early days here in Cornwall and then moved to Devon before studying at Merrist Wood and working all over the country , i then moved back down to Cornwall and after going back to work for the company that first got me into the industry i set up on my own . I spend a little time in the woods in north Cornwall when i was 16 during the summer i had left school , i didn't decide to stay as the firm was fairly primitive to say the least lol
  15. Short back and sides !!!!!!! way cheaper than a new lid
  16. I know of a local coal merchant that is buying in kiln dried hardwood , he sells heaps of it to the wealthier customers however several customers have come to me saying that the timber is too dry and feel it burns too fast ?! i dont mind having their custom but really does it burn that fast ??
  17. Wow that soundls like you were there in the good days , now it seems that there is very little done in house and most of it is now farmed out to contractors (some of which are crap) but the majorit of their contractors have been in the game years and know their stuff . I am envyous of both your self and Kernow Stu ! it seems like i was born in the wrong era !!! do you get down this way that often ? Cheers Dave
  18. Some Nice kit you have there wooded . how much timber does the trailer and botex carry ?
  19. Do you mean Terry voacs ? (big terry ) ?
  20. thb i not use predominately use Husky saws as i have found them to be the best all round saws for general ground work and felling , as soon as the 540t comes out we will be buying several and replacing the Ms200t and 201t this being said i will not be changing away from the ms880 as if way out performs the husky 3120 . all in all i thinks that it is good to have a mixture of saws that suit their application as opposed to being brand name led .
  21. What have you found to be wrong with them ? . I bought a pair of hi viz orange trousers when they first came out and found the fabric to be far less durable than the ordinary trousers ! when i inquired i was told that it was because of the chemical process the material undergoes to actually get to the orange/ yellow .
  22. I forget the name of the company that supplied us with a wired, woven Willow hedge that came in panel sections that simply had to be placed in the ground ! it worked really well and it did provide an instant screen !!! i will see if i can find a link !!
  23. roughtly 70 miles (90 mins) away , thats i the tin tents are not still on the roads !!
  24. What have Tregothnan got now ?
  25. Hi there , how would 30 tons of beech do ? we are regularly producing this sort of volume of timber in west an mid Cornwall , do feel free to pm me if you are interested Cheers Dave
