  1. I run a website about the WW2 Hunt class destroyer, HMS Wensleydale. I met a chap called Reg who served on the ship, and previously served on HMS Bulldog. In may 41 Bulldog along with a couple of other ships captured U-110. Reg was ordered into a boat and rowed over to U-110 before she finally sank. Below in the U-boat the found and recovered the boats enigma machine. The first time a U-boat had been boarded. Reg still had a few mementos he took from the boat. It's quite well documented what breaking the enigma codes did to shorten the war.
  2. Tomatoes and lettuce coming along ok. Also growing cucumber for the first time, at wife's request. I hate the stuff. Got some perpetual spinach coming through in pots to plant out in raised bed later
  3. Many a time I've thought what would have happened if that bullit was a few inches to the left and got him in the head. No Mother, no me and no kids??
  4. Following on from them stories. My grandfather was in WW2 and ended up being machine gunned and shot through the shoulder. His mate next to him got it in the head and was killed. He told me many stories (and was also my idol). How they were held up at Caan for a month, meeting the Russians at Lubeck, who he described as 'bloody awful'
  5. Won an Oscar for his role. A real life cowboy and world rodeo champion I think. He also wrote a book which I would like to get hold of sometime.
  6. I'm 50 and used to watch that as well. I seem to remember them calling the late night horror film 'fear on friday' .
  7. Love John Wayne. Back in the day I used to record all his films on the telly. My own favourites are Rio Bravo, she wore a yellow ribbon and Chisum. All with great character actors, Walter Brennan and Ben Johnson.
  8. Hell drivers is worth a watch Bad day at black rock is also a good old film. Peyton place. Loads of choice, depends what you like. Personally, I like film noir and the previous choice of Double Indemnity is definitely worth a watch.
  9. Here is one of the roads leading to my home town.
  10. It's right where I live. Upper Wensleydale. About a mile from my house. River Ure about 4 mike's downstream at Bainbridge has reached a record high, I believe.
  11. Like someone else said, I would go for one which your accountants use, if possible.
  12. Blimey, Lots of questions. I will do my best to answer! I do all my invoicing with sage one. It creates them, and I try to email as many as possible. It allows you to view profit and loss. Monthly and yearly etc It connects with my bank and brings statements over which I then match. Yes, it tells you what's overdue. Works out vat. And connects with HMRC Works out what's owed by invoices and gives percentages etc Not sure about payroll. Accountant does that. Not sure about self assessment. Again, accountant sorts it. Stock control. I don't hold much much stock, so does not effect me really. It's cloud based and both me and the accountant can access it anytime. I was going to go for QuickBooks, but the accountants use sage, and they are familiar with it, so ended up with sage one. Costs round about a tenner a month, including vat. I would not go back to writing up everything now, and working out vat with a calculator. But, the first few months really did my head in till I got used to it Hope that helps.
  13. I use sage one. Does the job fine, but takes a bit of getting used to.
  14. I used to go detecting a lot. I have a late 1990s laser powermax 2 detector. Cost around £400 back then. Don't buy a cheap one. I think minelab are popular at the moment. I've found all sorts of rubbish, bits of lead, bullets etc. But also some really interesting things. For example crotal bells, Roman broaches and most interesting for me, hammered coins, dating back to Edward the second. Finding your first hammered is a moment you will never forget Also found an unopened condom Including silver paper wrapper dated use by 1973. You will also find lots of old ring pulls. A good detector will discriminate against ferrus metal, as it's usually junk.
  15. Here's one of my favourite's from the more modern Rush era. My son's 21 and Rush is his favourite band. He's like me, a bit gutted at the moment.
  16. Heard some really sad news today. Neil Peart, drummer and the main songwriter with Rush has died. Had the pleasure of seeing them on tour in 2008. RIP Neil and thanks for many wonderful experiences listening to one of my favourite bands.
  17. Living on dead wood, but parts of the tree still living and in leaf. About an inch and a half tall, no more than two inches. Sorry, did not smell them or pull away from base.
  18. Can anyone identify this fruiting body for me? Found growing on native juniper today.
  19. My son is coming up 21 and has worked for me part time since the age of 13. He's currently doing final year of arb degree. Then it's up to him. He can either work with me or find employment. As long as he's happy, so am I.
  20. Had to learn about 20 a week at college in the early 1990's. My English, grammar and spelling is terrible. But, learning botanical names was something I was interested in and found quite easy. Forgot a few of the rarer shurbs since, but the majority of common trees still roll of the tongue.
  21. Agree, but around here, it's still called luck
  22. Luck money still happens at sheep auctions around here. It's all a bit secretive and can involve thousands of pounds being handed back, so they say, to the original seller. Bare in mind, prize winning tups can sell for tens of thousands of pounds at auction.
  23. And this always blows me away.
  24. 3 incredibly talented musicians, who played together from the mid 70's, until retiring a couple of years ago.
  25. Done: on a rainy cold day in Yorkshire
