There's plenty of blackthorn here, don't worry! To the South Downs again and there's a constant battle against it to preserve the traditional, if artificial, landscape of the sheep-grazed Downs. You often see plumes of smoke where heaps of the stuff has ben grubbed out and is alight

Yes, that too down here in the south east. It seems people have maybe learned to stop hacking the things to bits and actually letting them show themselves off at last. The pollinators love them too

Certainly agree re the may. I've seen both the South Downs and the Dorset Downs today and they are spectacular though I wonder if some of it isn't blackthorn - too late for that maybe? There's an armchair shaped valley in the South Downs against the south side of the A27 on the north edge of Hove where there are now almost no gaps in the scrub; if left alone I suppose it will soon become woodland. It's a stunning sight in the sun just now

Vic Muggeridge trading as ML Contractors? Mentioned this topic to a mate earlier and he came up with that name. He drove the lorry (which btw was ag registered so run on red!) a few times doing street trees in Wandsworth and said that when they turned up in a new street they'd see residents dashing to put their bins out 😂

WJ Kent? Used to have their yard at Cane Hill until it got built on; I think they moved about 100yds! I think they're on here actually as their AA accreditation was announced on here a few years back

Has anyone actually used these as a chip truck? Would they work? I don't know but a few years ago @Old Mill Tree Care actually seriously asked the same questions I remember. I think there was no definitive answer!

Caught this little one in my hand to help it from the greenhouse a few days ago. The same greenhouse that sadly killed an adult male GS Woodpecker the next day when it flew into the end. Wifey's ordered some clear stickers that are invisible to us but not birds apparently; something to do with uv light transmission. Anyone know anything about them?

Agreed. The rot on the top of the stump suggests the tree was in someone's garden and cut down some years ago since when rot has begun where the wood's been exposed to the elements. The stump has then been dug up, cleaned and the roots cut, probably by hand

Here in the south we had a brief but very cold spell when the ground was unusually wet (can't remember if the same applies further north). Loads of plants haven't made it that would normally have been expected to take the cold spell. As has been alluded to above eucs seem temperamental to our cold winter snaps Nice reduction Andrew Jon

My experience of selling to turners is that 9-14" diameter rings sell OK though MP seems to have fallen out of fashion. With those sizes it may be worth cutting at every other knot ring - just above or below a ring - so that the lumps have two eye rings: that way the piece can be turned into a vase or cut down again by the buyer No-one's making a fortune from selling but it may be worth contacting Home WWW.STILESANDBATES.CO.UK to see if they'd be interested; they're near Dover

I can't be sure but it looks like the soil level has been raised around the trunks. That's not a good thing to do and can often result in a slow death; lack of oxygen to the roots, decay of the bark followed by infection of the live tissue underneath
