1. For someone like me who doesn't get to do that kind of work but is fascinated by it I totally agree; the text especially explains what's happening and why. Hats off to those who do the video'd work but after a while the vids do get a bit samey. It's always good to see your long-term planning David; I guess what happened there was a kind of reverse halo-ing. Jon

Tree Id help

Photinia (fraseri) I would say, formerly Stransvesia.
3. I get you being too tight (!) but the thing's hypnotic: you don't watch the twisted metal (which may need a bit of straightening out of the wrapping) - you watch the engine.
4. You've got darned good hearing then Jon as the moment anything happens in the room - chat, TV, cat breaking wind - you can't hear the very, very quiet fan engine.
5. The effectiveness of this in our house is out with the jury at the moment but it looks great. Vulcan Fan | Stove Fan Shop
6. It only works for smooth talking bar stewards like you Al; I'm not just anyone's bitch you know.
7. Brilliant - thanks Clive: I'll put the gent in touch.
8. A turner in Lewes, East Sussex, is on the hunt for two logs of Norway Spruce (Picea abies): - must be straight, clean, wet and not split - min 250mm (10") x min 600mm (24") Anyone knocked one down recently or is about to? Thanks in advance, Jon
9. ...probably the common male plant 'James Roof'.
10. If you mean you do a lot of jobs on large hedges you probably want a chipper due to the size of the material. If you mean you do a lot of large jobs on hedges you probably want a shredder due to the size of the material.
11. They are: I have a pen from Alex in yew - very nice. Jon
12. My bad. At least the OP enjoyed my non-Nana story!
13. kiwi, there is hope for you! I had a semi-mature specimen in the garden that was so shaded by other trees, and hence weak, that I pollarded it at 11ft from the ground leaving just 3 large limb stubs. That was in 1997. I dealt with the shading/crowding by the other trees around and didn't touch the Catalpa again until I sadly had to clear it up after last winter's storms wrecked it (it split down the main stem). My point is that when the storm hit the tree was 45ft tall with an even crown that had the outline of an egg sitting on its fat end: it was the best tree in the garden! A slight caveat to my optimism is that the reason the stem split last winter was due to an inherent weakness in the form of an included union, i.e. an enclosed region containing bark from both major limb and trunk that had allowed rot to develop. This is very common in trees and often a cause of weakness but don't let it detract from your own long-term plans. Catalpa is a great tree - native to your country - so the best of luck with it. Jon

Re the Caithness log contact I'm awaiting reply. The guy concerned is a mate of my best man, the one farming on Noss Head. Ab (the farmer) is dead reliable so any delay won't be of his doing.

You won't be forgotten!

15. Is this of interest to you? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/79870-wanted-processed-fruitwood.html?highlight=fruitwood
16. Okay. Give me a day or two to make calls and I'll PM you then. Jon
17. My best man farms on the outskirts of Wick (Noss Head) and bought an artic of windblown softwood from the Navidale Estate a few years ago. He wasn't able to buy locally because it was all contracted to biomass. How were you thinking of getting it to you - out of Scrabster? Hang on a tick; there's a man from Sussex living halfway from Wick to Castletown; he bought a small softwood forest a couple of years back to supply his own biomass burner for a handful of houses. If I'm not missing the point entirely re your needs I could contact him as a potential source of timber.
18. Confucius say... stop prevaricating and just buy the bloody things.
19. Your second line is your answer. They're great value.
20. Totally agree with that. Great derail here trees bien . Just go there and sod the tree work!
21. Perhaps that was in the north? And I was there a long time before 2006!
22. I've spent five weeks in two visits based in Hobart and no-one offered me anything stronger than beer. Bugga. By 'time warp' I guess Ivecokid means they have preserved some Victorian history - Port Arthur for example - but I felt entirely contemporary while there. It's a great island to tour though I didn't go far north. The central plateau is thinly populated and part of the south west is still called wilderness. Bicheno - what a blowhole and just the best fresh caught crabs to be bought from local quaysides. Oh - tree work. I don't remember seeing any being done at all, either forestry or domestic, but as I said I didn't venture that far north.
23. Yeah but we're running out of it so the issue may become moot; there's plenty of wood though! Bring on fusion, then we'll be sorted.
24. That rings true. The current low prices are due to over supply (like milk mendiplogs!) and that's happened because OPEC (largest member by far = Saudi) refused to cut supply. We may not like their alleged plans but if we were in the same position would we do any different? Happy New Year to you all. Jon
