1. Those axe incisions are used on big old stems in a laid hedge to promote new growth. I've always cut them in. Sometimes works, sometimes not.
2. There seems to be as much conflicting evidence against the carbon Armageddon as for it. Of course the government want us to believe that we're ruining the planet as it's an easy tax hike ride.
3. Pear blister mite galls on the leaf and associated damage to buds and flowers.
4. She was sitting about 30m into a grass area off a slip road so just stopped on the hardshoulder and clicked away. One bird has hatched eggs and is followed by four chicks.
5. We're even taxed on that.
6. We're over a barrel here....pun intended We need the stuff, they have it. I think their argument is that they make very little profit from road fuels but from elsewhere. I have no idea what the answer is. I think part of the problem is that we're now convinced we've wrecked the planet, or so we're told, and that taxes on everything from fuel to tipping will ensure we all go to an ecologically sound heaven!
7. Been doing some tree clearance along boundary fence lines. So much wildlife on motorway corridors. Eight spp of butterfly today, lots of warblers in the bramble. Even peewits sitting on eggs...3 pairs and a beetle in an old ash log. Some sort of stag?
8. In that case I've got a bog standard Nokia:001_smile:
9. What's an android? Put me down as a numpty then:001_smile:
10. Well this is supposedly him. Osama bin Laden dead: 'photo of al-Qaeda leader's body' - mirror.co.uk
11. Or Norway.
12. Is it a syc? Bark doesn't look quite right.
13. Is the cambium still green when you scratch the bark off?
14. Just as a matter of interest. Oak trees used to be artificially infected, so I'm told, with Fistulina to create brown oak which was a valuable timber. Anyone know how this was achieved and at what stage did they know to fell before the timber degraded?
15. They must have taken plenty of cuttings before
16. Bin Laden killed by US troops today. So the world powers have known of his whereabouts for some time and this was obviously well planned. Do we now wait for retribution? Obviously good that they've cornered him but I'm not sure I want to be flying anytime soon!
17. Definitely a nightingale. Used hear a lot in France and Norfolk.
18. Mine had a bad leak last year. Turned out the oil filter had come loose. Worth checking.
19. Well I won't watch it. Mainly because it will a tear to my eye and big boys don't cry:001_smile: I fail to see how all the pomp and ceremony could fail to move anyone with just a little pride in this country and what it has stood, and still stands, for. Long may they live and reign.
20. Love the slow worms but rarely see them up here.
21. You have my permission to do what you think best. I've emailed Ted at ATF. Thanks for help.
22. Couple more pics
23. I'm no expert on landscape features but I've always taken a keen interest in them. It appears that this tree is growing in grassland that has never seen a plough and was probably part of an old open wood and meadow landscape. It was part of royal hunting forest. There appear to be traces of an old sunken road nearby with gnarly old trees on either side. Also some very big old beech trees on higher ground. I just can't believe nobody has ever noted this tree. It's just 30m from a main road although not in full view. The owner just said 'be careful with your pickup as you can drive into the back of it' So what do I do? Who should I tell...apart from you lot! It is truly an amazing tree.
24. Well I got to see the tree tonight albeit very quickly as the owner wanted to lock his gates. I've put a tape around at breast height and she's 37 feet circumference! That's not taking into account the lumps and bumps which I don't think you do. I have to go out soon so I'll post some more pics later.
25. They did it in style then Cholmondeley-Warner
