  1. Unpopular Poplar. Peel off some of the bark, and it will be fibrous
  2. Unless you are doing loads of very large leaning trees, you will find the ratchet wedge much more useful. I probably 20-30 trees with the Koller wedge, to one with the jack. Get proficient and confident with the ratchet wedge, then move onto a Jack. When things go wrong with a jack, because of the size of the tree, they go very wrong. Always always have a Plan B.
  3. Ratchet wedges are good, but you need to think about what you are doing. They will work on all but the biggest trees, and mine still surprises me. I have been useing the Koller wedge for 4 years, and has been faultless. They are alot heavier than wedges, but require a lot less effort. Alot of people complain that they are too slow. Tree Jacks are very heavy, but have an eye watering amount of lift. The smallest tree i have managed to use one on is 55cm diameter. Getting the cuts right takes alot of practice. Did I mention how heavy they are. I did a video of the Koller wedge, which i think is in the video section.
  4. Are you tracking them, or are they tracking you! What an amazing job
  5. Cheers David, now that you have said that i am heading towards the Brick tuft, H.lateritium. I kept coming back to the Sulfur tuft, which i knew it wasn't, and the brick tuft isn't in my id book.
  6. I'm sure that this is an easy fungi to identify, but i am going round in circles. Any thoughts?
  7. It sounds like you are ready to start looking for your own work. You will never make decent money working for other people. If you can build up a good reputation, then people will come to you. Just be mindful of blowing your own trumpet , and not able to deliver your promises. I regularly get people with vastly over inflated abilities, and deliver a big mess.
  8. Cattle are good for clearing brambles. The only issue that I have had is they tend to congregate in one place when not feeding, which can get a bit poached with minor root damage . Check the felling licence, normally have conditions about keeping livestock out for a minimum of 10 years .
  9. Just be wary 6-12 months down the line, when things aren't going well. I lost a good friend when he relapsed and died of alcohol poisoning. Make sure that you have some support, alcoholism is a life long disease.
  10. Every one likes a low stump, but it isn't always possible. Big spruce can take a tank of fuel just to trim the knees off, and you are still 18" of the ground. This site is going to be difficult to extract because of the stumps and the size of the timber. Trees are averaging 4m3, and the big ones 6m3 The other thorn in the ointment is about a third of the wood blow down in storm Eunice.
  11. I picked up one of these at the APF, it the most comfy helmet yet that I have worn. Zero Pinnacle Zertec vented helmet with Koroyd assembly, MSA Sordin ears (26SNR) / mesh visor – F.R. Jones & Son WWW.FRJONESANDSON.CO.UK
  12. Its all down to experience , my day rate for cutters is between £90-£200. It is not so much volume felled, but how tidy their presentation is. Most people when they start for me need at least 6 months to get up to speed, and in many cases 12-18 months.
  13. I like the Igland, but unless they are set up exactly, particularly after a few years abuse, they can be troublesome. Always found uniforest reliable
  14. Good article David, lots of difficult words, some of which i don't have to look up any more.
  15. Sun rise at the APF, it can only be a good day
  16. Found another Flame shield today, easy to spot, but difficult to photo at the bottom of a hollow tree stump .
  17. The inline fuel filter on mine is prone to blocking wuth gunk, and is only a fiver to replace. I have found speaking to tech support at Greenmech the best place to start. Always helpful.
  18. Ported saws and bottle jacks, it can only be a good day today.
  19. Dont worry i can come and annoy you, on Thursday and Friday 😁
  20. You will need your passport or driving licence to get into the docks. Not sure how Brexit has affected it, but it was very straightforward as the people or used to dealing with clueless fools. When i picked mine up, the ferry had docked about 4am, and i was able to load it by about 8am. Give us a ring if you have any questions 07966 792798
  21. There are similar things in west Wales used for baptism
  22. Those look like Bird cherry, so they wouldn't be exempt. One of the felling licence requirements is re-stocking, so you will need to provide an additional site if you are not intending to restock . Sites like this are always tricky, and the developers just want it done. If nobody complains then you will be fine. Richs idea has merit
