    There nothing wrong with Red Oak. The only difference is that it is not as strong as English oak. But as you are burning it that really does not matter. Just put it down to Oak snobbs, and once it is cut and split, no one other than a really sad tree spotter is going to know the difference.

    I can not see enough detail of the wings, but it is definitley a noctuid moth, so that count out the previous two. It does not have the heart and dart on the wings so that will narrow it down further, but with out being able so see the whole wing my guessing will have to stop there.

    Can you still get black gold. It is grease for rally cars, and it does not come off even with the help of a high pressure hose. Amazing stuff just don't get it on you.

    I ca not disagree more Jon, mine has only lasted about 6 months. It now leeks all over, and it is not a good fit for people at the larger end of the spectum. Its one saving grace is the fleece lined neck, always comfy no matter how wet.

    Don't skid out the trees, as sawmills hate stone in the bark. If it is muddy wash the logs before the buyer sees them. Get an accurate volume for sale, as it will save some haggling. Phone a number of saw mills to get an idea of price per cube/ foot Stand your ground, there are plenty of buyers out there.

    Work out the timber volume (useable part of the trunk up to about 4" in diameter) in a 5.6m circle (0.01 of a hectare). Repete this at random intervals to give you a volume per coup. The more times you do it the more accurate the answer.

    What do you mean by a block of milling oak ? Surely the only preperation needed is cutiing it to the right lenght ?

    I would say from what you have mentioned, that you now need experience. Tickets are handy but without the experience to back them up they are not much use. With what you have already you should have not much trouble in finding work. Once you have a couple of years experience, then think about furthering your education.

    Shame that you are the wrong end of the country to me, as i have some nicely coloured green ash and sycamore at the moment

    I have been using the 261 for the last month, which replaced my knackered 026. Noticeably less vibration. But it does not sound like a stihl anymore. I put it down to the spring av's instead of the rubber ones. I like the new saw though.

    I did not have to climb two dead Sycamores, managed to remove the B.T. tangled branches with the rods and not break the line and fel the trees. Just as i finnished the garage phoned to tell me that my landrover enginne had died. Warped head, and one shattered piston that had wrecked the block. Anybody got a 2.5 turbo engine ?

    It was in this months forestry journal. I have seen in the past at the royal welsh show, but this took place in N wales, and before the show. But i not seen it advertised anywhere before it took place. I was just interested.

    Did anybody one here know anything about this, or take part ? Not heard of this before, and i can not find much about it. Aparantly it took place on the 11th of June in Denbigshire N Wales.
