  1. Ok so I treated myself to a zz at the arbshow. Had my first play around today and so far so good. But, when ascending I'd like to get the zz further away from me so that I can advance more in one pull. I know the lady on the petzl stand said this was a common place thing to do. My question is what have people found is the best way to achieve this. My first thoughts are a soft link sling/strop. Any suggestions? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Nobody on any stand could tell me which would be coolest, Pfanner type c arb or Pfanner type c gladiator. Hope it's the gladiators.... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. What about an electric saw? Quite a bit quieter. What's the max diameter of stuff you'll have to cut? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Can be v nasty if you have asthma I've heard. I was in Norfolk over Easter and saw thousands of them on the trees in the dunes. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. I was diagnosed with CTS in both hands about 2 yrs ago. The symptoms are still there but with a few changes in activity and the way I work it has improved. I know that I'll need surgery eventually but at the moment it's not something I can afford to do (12 weeks of climbing essentially I reckon). I used to do a lot of rock climbing, especially bouldering. I cut this out and concentrated on more ropes climbs with bigger holds and not so much pinching! At work I tried to consciously loosen my grip on saws (within reason!) and try to climb the tree using my legs to progress upwards whenever possible instead of hawling myself up the rope. One thing I've really been meaning to do is to try some new climbing systems and get more friction out the system. Cutting down on caffine and not smoking are said to aid circulation but I confess I have no hope in meeting that criteria! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. One of Bob's classics, love it!!! Rarely a day goes by without a bit o Bob for me Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. Overpriced Surrey? I went to North Norfolk at Easter and they wanted £17 for scampi and chips at some of the local pubs! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Love it! Not sure it'd work in uk, all you'd get is residents complaining about the leaves in autumn! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. +1 for the timberwolf. Had one as my first chipper and lasted me 4 years. Once you get used to what it will chip and how to prepare the brash it's an efficient little machine. Portability was excellent. Found that it jammed less on conifer if using slightly off blades, too sharp and it dragged to much through. 10min job to change on site so no big problem. 10. Ha ha! Good answer!! I shall pass both these no's on, cheers Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Hi all I have some friends in Iffley, Oxford, who need some tree work doing. Anyone recommend a good firm down there? Cheers Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Thanks for the feedback. I agree and would prefer he had cs30. I suppose I'm questioning how different the two courses can be, if they both cover safe use of saw then why is one the preferred ticket for arb? I think my argument will be ( seeng as he's not full time with me) that he will be more employable with other firms if he goes with cs ticket. Still waiting on rely from insurance co.. 13. Hi All I'm after some help if possible. A guy who works for me wants to do his chainsaw ticket. I've found him a local place to do CS30. He has come back and said he can do a cheaper course through a friend who does training but that the course he is looking at is run/certified by NPORS (National Plant Operator Registration Scheme). My question is, what is the difference between these courses and is there any reason that the npors course is not suitable for arb? I've yet to contact my insurance co for their view but will be doing. Any views or advice appreciated Cheers Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. This beech went during the Feb winds at the neighbouring property to my customer. When I was quoting, the right hand stem was teetering on some bad wood. Not sure when it joined the rest on the ground but glad I didnt have to work under it today!
  15. I've just spent 3 weeks sub climbing, which meant using other peoples fuel/oil. Now my 200t is full of congealed horribleness and won't oil properly. Any ideas of best way to clean it out? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. My truck currently has a big space where the engine should be..... At least I'm not out in this weather! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. Been lucky here in Notts, not really had a wet day this year. Feel for you guys down south though. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  20. I've found that contact lenses actually protect my eyes from the dust, well I certainly don't find myself bothered as much by it as when I wear glasses. I do also see the potential for infection if crud does get behind the lense though. 3 months ago a piece of hedge found it's way into my eye and pierced a hole dead centre which I had to have glued up. The Drs at A&E said the contact lense probably slowed the object enough that I kept my sight in that eye. A close call as they say. I am now extra careful to wear eye protection at ALL times!! 21. Having very nearly lost the sight in one eye a couple of months ago whilst hedge trimming, I've started to wear goggles/glasses under my visor. I picked up some at the APF called Safe Eyes which seem Ok. They are the fine mesh sort so misting up no problem, not amazingly comfortable but for £10 can't complain. Pretty sure there are others out there which may be better design Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Rugged case in my pocket, I prob won't deal with a call til break but I agree with dent, I like to have it handy in case of an emergency Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. Thanks for your reply Alec. Luckily the trees are in a private property so if they do shed a limb then it would be very unlucky to be a danger to anyone. Like I said the tree with the bracket seems to be in relatively good condition and fruiting well. I've just pruned all of them today so keeping the weight off for now. Will just keep monitoring them I guess Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Cheers sloth. I had just found some info online which also pointed me in that direction. I'm assuming it's black because it's so late in the season for it? The apple it's on is actually the healthier of a group of 3. The other two are showing symptoms of the same as they have some very weak and in some cases hollow limbs, but no visible brackets like this..... Not looking good for them anyway Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Found this bracket on an old apple tree, can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
