  1. That looks a nightmare! I've not had as many greenhouses, but had this one a few months back- 4 ponds, a fibreglass boat, trellis, ornememtal lights and some very brittle shingles! One of the groundies took an accidental swim on last day! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Thanks for the reply APC. Reading up a bit on the web, it certainly has the characteristics of Chondosterum purpureum. Will go back and check the leaves now too. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Can anyone help me with id of fungi on this plum tree? It seems to be mainly present at previous pruning wounds but there is also a large patch spreading up the stem. There has recently been groundworks carried out nearby which may have affected the roots, not sure if that could be connected some way? Any help greatly appreciated! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Angle first, horizontal second, just taught that way. Only time I do other way is if I'm on spikes and it's a big tree and the weight of the gob wood is poss going to trap the saw Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. That's great if your mates actually do something useful you can trade work for. My mate wanted some tree work doing, he works in finance dept at council.... £400 as a mates rate would be about right I'd say Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Thanks for the input guys. As far as know there hasnt been any major changes to surrounding ground area in last 15yrs at least. Will do some more investigating! Is there any kind of root fungus/disease that could cause sucha sudden decline?
  7. Nope, nothing! its TPO'd and has been left to itself for known history..
  8. No Skyhuck, garden was landscaped 15 years ago but nothing major. It is on a severe slope, surrounded by other trees, including other beeches of similar size. All the others appear healthy.
  9. Ha ha! Afraid not... all timber staying on site!
  10. So I'm trying to find out what might have caused a large established beech to have died. Was fine last year apparently but this year failed to come into leaf? I've been searching for possible causes but not getting far. Can any one throw some ideas this way? Sorry, no pics at the moment!
  11. That's my view too Paul, it's a lovely tree. I just don't want to tell him it's fine and then get a call in the future saying its flattened his tomatoes! I guess I'm looking for reassurance I've told him the right thing! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. Hi All My friend has this beech in his garden. He loves the tree and by no means wants it gone, but is concerned about this cavity near the base of the stem. It appears to be an old wound where a branch has been removed - probably when the extension was added to the house, not sure when. The cavity isnt huge but is constantly holding rain water. At most it is about 7-8" deep. The tree has a lean to it which is away from the house, but that said, he doesnt want it to eventually flatten his chicken coop and poly-tunnel! Would you say he has reason to be concerned? As I said, he want to avoid having it removed, do you think it warrants a reduction to get some weight off? Or would you say leave it as is? there does seem to be plenty of good stem.. Any advice appreciated! Cheers
  13. Well have just received delivery of a spanking new vertex. Thanks for all the replies folks! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Cheers guys. So basically same design, just Alevo a little thinner and cheaper right?
  15. Hi All A friend of mine has this Sorbus that has died and she would like to know the possible cause, any ideas? It was planted in '95 and has been fine but then failed to come into leaf this spring. I'm not sure on the situation as regards to roots as she has only sent me these photos. Cheers
  16. Hi All Can anyone tell me what the difference between the Petzl Vertex and Alveo helmets is? Is it just the weight? Cheers
  17. +1 for the butter/olive oil method Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Mmmmmm that road will be a mud slide come June! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. I freelance climb and only one company I work for uses them. I think as a tool they are brilliant, can't beat it from the safety point of view, they use a system where everyone can hear everyone else. Only down side is its not an arb system so the wires don't half get in the way when I climb, need a wireless/Bluetooth system! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. When I was a college 3/4 years ago mechanicals weren't even mentioned. I've been thinking of trying one out but still climb on a prussik. I free lance and can honestly say that everyone I know in the industry also climbs on a prussik or friction knot of some kind. I'm not saying ones better then the other, I'm still waiting to try one out - zigzag looks good!
  21. Put a tarp in the pickup first, once full 2 people can more less pull out the full load - no shovelling!
  22. That part was definately replaced last time it went in....
  23. Cheers for the feedback everyone. Hopefully getting a chance to try out a skylotec before I make a decision... the TM looks really good but at a price!
  24. The £300 was split over 2 different dealers about 6 months apart and included parts and service. Not excuses for not fixing it I know!
  25. So my harness is due for replacement. I've had this one since I started in the business, its an Antec Abies. Its been great, love the fact that it has loads of back support and the rigid leg loops. But I'm ready for an upgrade. What do people recommend?? At the moment I climb on a prussic but am toying with the idea of trying out SRT, if that makes a difference? Have been looking at the Petzl Sequoia, any one use one?
