  1. Hi all whats peoples thoughts on grinding stumps infected with honey fungus. Should the grindings be removed from site? thanks
  2. Hi All Trying to ID this bracket fungus on a Poplar, I'm thinking Oyster Fungus but looking for some input from someone with more knowledge than me! The tree was Pollarded some time ago by the look of it but the re-growth is not that vigorous so very little weight in the crown apart from the stem itself. Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks
  3. Is this Honey Fungus? Not sure what the tree was as the stump is quite old - probably Beech or Oak looking at surrounding trees.
  4. Hi All I'm in need of some extra hands on the ground, no fixed days but probably 1 or 2 days a week. Based in Nottingham. Simon 07939 141530
  5. If anyone knows Se7enthdevil can you ask him to check his inbox? Have some timber for him!
  6. I did consider Almond but the leaves don't seem long enough. They're more rounded like an Apricot, but again just not quite there. May just settle for Prunus!
  7. Damson's a good shout but as you say it would have a few thorns. Unless the thorns are higher up... I would have thought the owner would have mentioned being bombarded with fruit if it was a damson too.
  8. Hi All Trying to ID this and can't for the life of me put my finger on it. Some sort of Prunus? No picture of the whole tree I'm afraid, just leaves and bark. It had a slightly weeping form to it. Any help greatly appreciated!
  9. Left the key to the chipper wheel clamp at home one day 😳
  10. If he has his 38&39 why don't you let him get some experience. Then you'd be paying him a 'climbers' wage for climbing? One way of looking at it... Obviously there are pros and cons to working with close friends, personally for me I think it's worth the extra to have someone with me who I know and trust - even if it does mean they can prob get away with more than an employee I didn't know would.
  11. Hi All Anyone know what IBT is like as firewood? I've been told it turns to rock when dry so guessing it'll need splitting green, anyone any experience with it? Cheers
  12. Nothing of any note, just the only tree left in garden so a shame to see it go. Will let nature take its course, it feels pretty solid still so prob got a few years left!
  13. Thanks David, that certainly sounds like the one - in looks and feel! Its taken quite a foothold on the tree in question, do you know if there are any steps that can be taken to protect the tree?
  14. Hi All Found this on an old Apple tree today, can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks
  15. Got one too! Not read past the intro yet but looks good 👍
  16. I've only watched the first episode of this new series and I have to say I thought they recreated the original very well. So many different programs have tried to copy it in some way and Evans and co have shown them all how it's (still) done
  17. Add Mrs Browns Boys to that list
  18. Hi All Hoping someone may be able to offer some advice/wisdom on a sick Rowan tree. A friend of mine has a mature rowan, got to be 30yrs old at least, which is showing signs of dieback in the crown. The stem also has large cracks in it, but he hasn't seen any oozing from these. I've got a picture of the bark but unfortunately he had pruned out the dead branches before I arrived. No fruiting bodies are present. The tree is sprouting from the base. One other thing I noticed was that there is a large portion of root, approx 3-4" dia and 4m long, that is visible in his lawn. It has obviously been hit by the mower a few times and when I asked him about this he said that the root has only come to the surface in the last couple of years. The tree is situated in the middle of a lawn. Some kind of canker? Any ideas great appreciated! Sorry, picture needs rotating!
  19. That is exactly my stance Mick, I've made it clear to him that I don't give any assurances! But he's a friend as well as a customer so I don't want him to spend his budget on a pricey consultant unless it's really needed. I'm confident in my assessment of most common school yard species but not really come across bean trees before in a work capacity, of this size at least!
  20. Is that reduced because they needed to be, or just because they are to big for their space? These trees have loads of room so pruning would only be carried out if safety required it.
  21. Hi All I'm after a bit of advice on Indian Bean Trees. I have a customer, a school, who have 2 fantastic mature Bean Trees in the school grounds. (I don't have any photos at the moment but will try and get some). Both trees must be 25ft tall and twice as wide and provide a great natural canopy for the children in the playground. They seem in great health, except from quite a bit of deadwood in the lower inner canopy, which you can understand. The caretaker of the school is constantly panicking that they are going to shed their limbs onto the kids and keeps taking about having them reduced. I have been resisting this and have told him not to worry and that maybe a clean out of the deadwood would be the best option. I guess what I'm looking for is peace of mind that I have given the correct advice. I know that the wood can be brittle but is it likely that they can shed limbs when they reach maturity? Has anyone got any experience of maintaining mature Bean trees? Just to be clear, everyone concerned is very attached to the trees so any pruning would only be done if there was any real danger. Thanks
