Thanks Paul. The problem is most consultants say ‘rest for two weeks, you’ll be back at work in 4’ without having a single concept of what we do for a living. I really want to get this right, I can afford one chance. Is it best to stay reasonably active after the op, walking dogs etc.?

I’m still working every day, just trying not to climb/twist much, or lift heavy at work. I’m still smashing the bench in the garage, 95x7 last night, a new PB at 52! Benching doesn’t seem to aggravate it, although I cut out dips and chins months ago. Any tips for pre/post op recovery? I can take a few weeks off, but not months.

I kind of ignored this mate, thinking you’d just had a bad customer or installed a pump arse about face or something. You know, the usual. You’ve got lots of mates on here Eggs, and as you know, sharing or talking about stuff usually helps. You’ve got my number if you fancy a chat tomorrow.

Update on this, and I thought I’d tag @Darrin Turnbull to avoid repetition. I’ve been working around the hernias, but the pain isn’t getting any better, more so after bigger days. The specialist thinks they will only enlarge with time, and my guts will end up in my ball bag. Not much choice really, having both sorted with a keyhole op on the 7th Jan. Private, £5k. The current NHS waiting list in my area is well over 2 years. At least I’ll sit out some crappy weather I suppose.

I wouldn’t say I’ve ever been a big fan of the hunt, but I’m certainly not opposed to it either. The digging out of foxes that have gone to ground never sat well with me, though. I suspect I’m not alone in this.

The tree at the front with ‘the canopy covering the road’? It barely covers the verge. Does your surveyor understand the Plasticity Index of clay soils? Does he/she even understand heave? Say an oak drinks 150,000 litres of water a year. Whether you knock the tree over in a oner, or over 5 years, the soil (if it’s clay with the necessary PI) will still expand the same amount that adding 150,000 litres of water will cause it to. You could possibly slow heave, you couldn’t stop it. Lastly, I think ‘lovely house’ is pushing it, but I’m a snob.

I’ve got some completely dark steps up to the back of my workshop that I’ve nearly set my arse on a few times. I took your advice Kev and bought a cheapo PIR solar light from Screwfix for £23.99. Bingo! I can now see where I’m going. Fair play to these little Chinese kids, they’ve sorted me right out!

I wouldn’t ever slate 2-rope working when it’s comfier, faster, safer, or more appropriate on some jobs. I will say it’s a total crock of shit on a lot of jobs, though, and I will simply never use it on those. Single stem connies? Chogging a pole? Where are your 2 separate anchors? It’s unnecessary clutter. Unnecessary clutter is dangerous.

I’m not an idiot. I only climb trees that I’ve dismantled using a MEWP (as per industry best practice). I always use two MEWPS, though, because it’s safer?
