  1. Have you seen how far they run when you offer them anything remotely tree surgery related?
  2. Have you checked for the obvious like air leaks That's an old school saw so its had plenty of time for seals to harden That was a great saw in its day, (I can still feel my fingers tingling now), but its been a while since it was front line kit. If you rely on it as an earning tool it might be time to cut your losses and go for something a bit more this decade
  3. You talk a good fight but do you ever buy anything :laugh1:
  4. The handle length is "calibrated" to the input force, a longer one can cause problems to the shear pins if nothing else. Greasing the cable is also bad advice, grease will pick up grit, which will , as it gets pulverised by the internals, make a nice grinding paste, it also puts lubricant directly on the jaws that are supposed to grip the wire, to say nothing of the fact that you are going to get a nice covering every time you use it.
  5. There is no "technically" about it, anyone "cards in" is entitled to any PPE that's required. There is no card to be played only a legal duty to be followed. Any employer could simply claim a rate of pay reflected an enhanced rate, how would an employee prove otherwise, your rate of pay has nothing to do with the provision of PPE.
  6. Mig, tig MMA?

    Heart attack

Speaking as a recent heart attack sufferer (Jan 2015) you are right and wrong, there are those who are genetically pre disposed to coronary conditions however diet and life style play a significant role. There is history of heart condition in my immediate family but there is also little doubt that diet and lifestyle played a major role in my condition My heart attack was caused by a blockage in the blood supply to part of the heart wall, this is directly linked to it getting bunged up by fat deposits and that's down to me, my problems are self inflicted. The heart attack was relatively minor, more significantly the subsequent stroke nearly killed me. Take care of what you have, it can be gone before you know it.
  8. If you were in a tornado area the trees next to your house are the least of your problems, they are going to get ripped out and land somewhere else, its the ones that were on someone else's property that are going to land on yours and cause problems.
  9. There are plenty of people out there devoid of mechanical sympathy:thumbdown:
  10. Of course you can still use it but it may require some thinking. Once upon a time, in the days before "no stress" technology existed we had a thing called thinking. People operating machines would assess the size of the material and manually operate the machines in feed using a process called thinking. Its a quality that over dependence on technology seems to be breeding out for some but thankfully, when put to the test, most rise to the challenge.:laugh1:
  11. Calm yourself and be reassured that, in and of itself that lean isn't a cause for concern. It does indeed look to be phototropism (grown towards the light) and while its hard to tell from the picture notwithstanding other defects those trees are as good a condition or better than many others I don't think that angle is anything like 30 degrees and having grown in that attitude the trees will be "optimised" in their location
  12. Yeah, its amazing isn't it, errr, how many is that?, I mean how many is it that "take pictures" and "do nothing to stop them continuing". Do you have any details or are you just speculating? Are we really complaining about here about nothing happening to address cowboy contractors while yet in other threads complaining that people do act?
  13. It arrived damaged, send it back
  14. Its not so much how far you can travel as how long it will take you. A trip across the other side of Manchester can take several hours if you time it wrong
  15. Yes but you cant have it cos I am still driving it:laugh1:
  16. The simple answer is (provided its your place to do so) to provide the client with the information needed to make an informed decision then let them do that.
  17. I have rescue climber exemption because I was climbing before they invented rescue climbing:laugh1:
  18. Something that hasn't been touched on is the worst case scenario. Any insurance you may hold expects you to behave in a prudent manner so having identified the problem you need to act. This is going to mean the tree needs to go or you need someone to put pen to paper on a cyclical basis to say its OK. You can also accept the fact that the insurers wont cover losses arising from an incident they can disown and keep the tree. The condition isn't going to get better and how fast its going to deteriorate is a lottery. Gather all the info you can and make an informed choice
  19. Don't sweat it, the builder spent a couple of months tracking all sorts of plant over the roots, altering soil levels, installing services and such like.
  20. Liking the brash pile on the beach, what time is high tide? :laugh1:
  21. Do what the customer wants and bight your lip, or work for someone else
  22. No one said poorly, read the above, and where safety is the issue everyone has the right
  23. Just because the man is described as new doesn't mean he is inexperienced or wrong
  24. meripilus giganteus Long term prognosis is bad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meripilus_giganteus
  25. There have always been thefts, the only thing that has changed is the reporting, back in the pre internet days when someone got cleaned out word found its way through the grapevine over days and weeks. Now we find out about the minutia of each event while the scrote is still running from the deed Nothing has changed except the reporting
