  1. I've just heard back from my brother. He said he would be interested in any Alder slabs 510 x 360 x 44 if anyone knows of any once Luthier finds what he needs Sorry to hijack your thread Luthier.
  2. It's bad that I want one of those Protos facemasks?
  3. My brother makes guitars and swamp Alder (I asked him for the Latin and he just looked at me) is apparently good. He made a guitar from a piece of Deodar cedar and he made a lovely one. I'm sure he would be interested if someone has anything similar. I have asked him to log on and ask but he hasn't bothered yet as far as I know.
  4. Whys that? Never heard that before. Is it because of weight?
  5. Haha!! Brilliant reply!! Good man
  6. Thought you got Ash trees down in a day?? Only joking mate. Looks like a lovely place to work
  7. That looks smart. Core completely removed?
  8. Instructional 16 Strand video. Try to keep up!?
  9. Exactly that. Everyone only looks through their own eyes. If you've got a skid steer and GCRS etc, you've got to pay for it all. If some old boy pays his climber an extra 50 quid for a tough day and does it in a day with a capstan and some 3 strand for 1200 as opposed to 5k. No-one loses. I know which firm I'd rather do it with but we're all walking our own path. Just because someone puts 900 quid on it, doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing. Just because someone puts 3k on it doesn't mean they do either. This thread is the most I have enjoyed Arbtalk for a long time.
  10. I'm almost certain that the majority of us could. Although the Greenkeeping team would need to spend a week correcting the lawn after I attempt it.
  11. I reckon I'd get that done in a day if we upgrade my bird table Plan A, into Plan B..... 30ft Dove Cote. Job done
  12. Something that size would look beautiful with a couple of pot and a bird table on it. Be a shame to grind it?
  13. Always surprising the amount of sawdust and rubbish off big tree. Just ringing that up to get to a level to split them will be a good amount of work for someone.
  14. Fair bit of Timber in the stem. I reckon 2 days to be safe
  15. @jfc Don't try to do the cover bury in one go either. Do it in at least 2. I put a crab in the eye and anchor off the cover once I've done the first stage to set the eye right, then go back to the fid for the second stage. Make sure the eye doesn't twist either so it still looks nice. Use a wire fid as well for all of it. Much easier. Hi Vee has a very loose strand construction so just be careful when you use the fid and make sure you don't part any by accident. Exit the fid, just before the core strands come out and on the opposite side. Pull on the core to bunch up the cover and to help keep the core strands in place. You really dont want to go through one. I've got 16 strand down to the point that I don't need to go outside and anchor it off to a tree to run it home. I just do it inside. My favourite part of all splicing is drawing in the cover and the core on a 16 strand splice but I'm a bit of a geek
  16. First of all, Daisy chain the core, makes it a lot easier when you're working with it and most of it gets cut off anyway
  17. What part are you struggling with? There is definitely a few things you can do to make it a bit easier
  18. Lad dropped it off today, he got 25m for 30quid. Lucky chap
  19. Little tight eye. Drop me your email @silky fox if you want those videos. I keep forgetting
  20. Hi Ricky. The course is worth it if you are going to be doing any sort of Felling. You will be taught felling stems under 100mm which will help you gardening. The course is recommended that you refresh every few years, however, you would be better upskilling and doing the next course up which refreshes the one below. Obviously the skills are perishable if you don't use them often and the refresher course isn't a full assessment. Where are you based?
  21. So thats not implied by putting ****? Sounds like you're taking the **** and being a bit of a **** by moaning about a point that doesn't need making. That's your perogative though and just my opinion. If you disagree, stick it up your **** and **** off. Not swearing though.
  22. Couldn't find any beads. Lent my last lot to Joe and he never bought them back. Hope this makes sense. Just cinch all the beads down to the end to cover up the fisherman's knot and tie a simple knot on the top to prevent movement.
  23. There was a no swearing policy that was pretty much upheld for a long time. The change in server removed a filter and now it seems to be fairly common place. No entirely sure its necessary. Anyone who has spent more than 10 minutes with me in the right situation will know that I'm prone to a few expletives. When you have to type them out, it becomes a bit redundant and pointless. That's not to say I've not slipped and done so myself. There is a difference between how you talk on the shop floor, in here and in a customer's garden. Although maybe there isn't. I know I wouldnt be shouting swear words from the top of a tree in a garden. Maybe some would. What do I know though.
  24. Then the knot can just be an overhand knot and that keeps all the beads in line and tight. The loop/splice at the end would just be to attach to the dummy. The little splice just means that you could do it all on a single bit of rope instead of a double one. I'll have a look and see if I can fashion something to show what I mean
