  1. That was a few days ago, getting thinker by the day, 3 more to go!
  2. Been busy doing stuff throughout the summer, bit like last year really. Will check in more over the winter and try not to be too rude to the "how much will I earn with CS38?" threads.
  3. This is good news! I looked at the address and it all becomes clear! Well done HB!!
  4. I use a figure 9 on mine, it works ok.
  5. Seriously, stop watching the news!! It will all be fine. Another thing I thought was this: If you go to ten mates houses for dinner then eventually its your turn. You might not be the best cook and you might be a bit skint that month but its still your turn to do your bit. Its our turn to do our bit for the Olymipcs, and we will do our best. Comparing to others or critisising is pointless. For the next 50 odd years we will be guests again at someones elses house, and I am sure they will make mistakes (that we wont ever see) but overall the Olymics will continue so lets not take any notice of the media attention on the slightly uncooked dinner!
  6. Well, the media is more to blame for that than the organisers. They only focus on what goes wrong or could go wrong. Look at the run up to Euro 2012, all the news was about polish racists, nothing about the wonderful country of poland or much about the game of football (gay though it is). Who cares if G4S have screwed up, its their loss, plenty of good will come from the games, and the majority of the soldiers sent there are loving it!! G4S already stands for Good for soldiers. But I expect the media will continue to pick out the negatives. I am sure lots went wrong on the build up to Bejing, only difference there was that the offenders were shot and there is no free media!! Jessica Ennis for me BTW, and you get to see her do ten events, or is it twelve, who cares!
  7. Ah, I see! I had to watch the video on my phone, I see what the fuss is about now!!
  8. But surely if its in another country there are still costs. Someone has to pay even if its another country? And then our athletes have to travel so that costs money without there being the benefit of extra visitors to our country. I am sure we have all (mostly) enjoyed many many Olympics over the years, so for it to continue each country takes its turn and now its ours. It wont be again for a very long time, so in the history of the Olympics the expenditure is very minor. Yes it may have come at a bad time but it can still do a lot of good for the country, epsecially in Jubilee year when a lot of eyes have been on us already, we should be pleased and proud to host it.
  9. What a bunch of miseries!!!!!!!!!!! Pathetic small mindedness IMO! With the exception of ELG and his few supporters and Skyhuck, you are all a bunch of wingers!! Rich Rule, I'm surprised!! Your an athletic sporting type of bloke, you know what these people put in to their respective sports to be the top of their game, yet you complain about being stuck in traffic on your way to/from cutting a poxy tree down. Who cares, there is more to life than work. We should all enjoy the spectacle, be proud of the county for doing its best in difficult financial times and if its not as good as Bejing then that wont make it a flop, (Mr Bullman!!) and I think we will see far more golds for team GB than before, along with many new records being set etc. The rest of you moaners would do well to remember that tree cutting is not the be all and end all of life in this country, some people have far more interesting hobbies/activities and sports etc. and push themselves further to achieve in their lives than you lot ever will. Ha ha, what a good day for a rant!
  10. Well said! I know the council policy wording will differ from that, but the fact remians that the main employer is morally bound to sort these things AND take it on the chin when it goes wrong. No else can be to blame for a boss not doing his/her job right and (other than verbal maybe) an employee or "subby" should not be testing the employer to see if he/she has done their job.
  11. I could do with a very good groundie next tuesday if thats any good to you? Then my groundie is off for a month the week after so might lead to more but probably not climbing work. I generally prefer good climbers as groundies for some jobs where a newbe brush dragger might not quite be up to it. Let me know, pm prob best.
  12. Probably the best book on the subject that there is.
  13. IMO any employee found to be felling a tree without consent should just laugh it off and point the LA in the direction of the employer who should then take the caution himself. Its a disgrace that employers are sending workers out without the correct paperwork (even if they dont have it in hand it should be in the office) and then the worker gets the blame. I know about LA's policy of the person with the saw is to blame etc. but the person with the saw is merely a representative of the company carrying out the work. To the OP, dont worry about it!! Get a new boss or a pay rise for your inconvenience.
  14. I fixed a tipper with a spoon once! There was a bridge that carries the main power from solenoid to hydro pump and it had burnt out. An old teaspoon from under the drivers seat got put in its place when we didnt want to be shoveling at the end of a long day. It glowed red hot when the unit was tipping but lasted quite a few weeks! I like a good bodge!
  15. I just moved to trust. Very good deal IMO.
  16. I woul dhave thought there is insurance for companies to use sub contractors of different trades (completely different) to carry out seperate contracts in the way you are describing. I've not really heard of insurance bonds so cant help there, sorry. If you can get on directly with the council then go for it, but it might be that they just dont do it that way. i.e. they have 3-4 big companies doing things like security and then all small stuff (tree work is probably a small expense) is done through those larger companies. Where I live I guess I'm lucky, tree work is a big enough thing to the town and we have two full time tree officers issuign work of the highest quality to decent small firms like me.
  17. As an arb contractor to the council I also get notified of other contracts that I might be interested in, electrical, cleaning etc. etc. Not that I would do it, but I guess that is whats happening. If the security company have the business skills and set up to over see the tree work then it is above board (no matter how strange it seems) and they must have some insurance to cover themselves as they would be the person that the council would claim against first. A third party passer by would probably claim directly to you, but if they claimed from the council it would go to the security company before you.
  18. No, not if its just used for a hitch advance in climbing. Both are rated high enough for light rigging and then the rapide would then be an advantage.
  19. Marketing at its best/worst, making you want something for no reason!
  20. Yes, if it were a company vehicle you would be getting paid considerably less than you are and then gettign taxed as if you were earning that amount (or nearly) The whole point of company cars is that they are part of an employment package, so if one company offers you 20K and another offers 18K plus a car, you take the second offer, but you will get taxed on that car which essentially belongs to you (for the duration of your emplyment) Taking the truck home is not the same thing at all. Its not your vehicle. Some companies (im think office types, not tree work) have "pool" cars. They can be taken home and the employees are not taxed, its not the same as a "company car". Who is suddenly going to tax you for it anyway?
  21. 50 odd years ago a bloke called Higgs realised there was something missing in atoms that would explain how they work, now its not missing anymore but still no one actually knows how they work. Simple!
