  1. Unless its issued to you as a company car as part of your employment package then there wont be any tax on it. Maybe dont shout about it to the tax man though. Just see it as a huge priveledge to take it home and dont abuse it!! Many people I know have been sacked for beign spotted using the van to go to the pub etc. Of course if it were truely a company car then you could use it for personal use, but I imagine in this case that is nto how it is!
  2. Why did you think that? Arbtalk is not here to help with every problem in the world, if your vague with your requests and no one knows the answer then your going to get sarcy comments. Your taster session has just started!!
  3. I see where you are coming from but there are so many ways of doing this that its not often a problem. I'd be more concerned about the butt end hitting the groundie than the tippy tips hitting the climber. Again its all to do with type of cutting, "angle of dangle" and groundie skills. The actuall rigging is a minute part of the whole procedure. Secondary rigging points and/or winching the section upright before finishing the cut are both good methods.
  4. Stick all the food on the freezer for another day. But my advice is dont ever invite work colleagues to your house, dont mix work and personal. Of course you may well make genuine friends with people at work who may become friends for life but generally being "friendly" at work is not the same as being friends. There is only one or two people that I have worked with over the last 20yrs that I would have in my house for a social visit.
  5. Removing a third of the tree only should cost well over half of the original price to fell. Don't go in at a third of the cost!!
  6. Bad luck stu!!! I dont think anyone should underestimate the significance of two brits in the masters. A really really great achievment IMO, and winning the prelims is a top job Stuart.
  7. Petzl ones make you look like a work at height proffessional whereas Stein ones make you look like a power ranger. Take your choice.
  8. I think he was talking about a "heath and safety certificate" not an RA, but again the terminology is not quite right, its a "health and safety policy" and you write it yourself, its not a certificate of anything. But he's right, with less than 5 employees you done HAVE to have it, but that doesnt mean that I potential client cant ask (and expect) to see one if they choose to.
  9. Yes, I have no doubt they said "mission" but I dont think thats what they meant. Even a method statement is a bit uneccesary, the RA shoul dcover it but it is common to be asked for a method. Ideally it should be in the quote. "We will lower pieces with ropes to prevent damage" etc. then they can see what they are actually paying for.
  10. Do they mean "method statement" A mission statement is usually more to do with your long term aims/goals and moral intententions of your business and not really anything to do with any one particular job and so wouldnt be needed. A method statement is simply a list of key facts that you intend to adhere to in the process of the job that it relates to. So for the job you have coming up write down how your going to do it. Get Spikes out of bag. Cut down tree Pick up sticks Go to pub. I would go into some more detail if I were you but it needed be much.
  11. "presenter" is a bit strong. Didnt he just ride the motorbike?
  12. My local TO has, in the past, informed that a TPO is going to be imposed but he gives me theopportunity to withdraw my application so that this doesnt happen. We then look at making a new application for lesser works if applicable. Once the TPO is in place it doesnt matter if the application is withdrawn or not, or if it stays on their system or not, I wouldnt give a monkeys either way.
  13. I want to see the folding Euc vid again. Angus McMahon was going to dig it out and get it youtube but I dont think he ever did. Best video ever IMO but I dont think the quality of the film or the edit is anything like as good as the Tahune one.
  14. No insurance is required for a small business, but without it your not insured.
  15. I would wince/cringe and worry about him!
  16. Money should not be a factor, just keep away full stop.
  17. Both are a good idea but you would still need to start at the bottom and work your up. Lets say i need a chainsaw operator, I am going to get one who has worked with chainsaws for sometime. Then if I need a dragger I could get someone like you. If you came to me the week after doing a chainsaw course I could let you cut the odd piece here and there but I wouldnt rely on you as a chainsaw operator if that makes sense. Getting some kind of job first is always a good idea, if you cant do that then a chainsaw ticket is unlikely to help. Folk will say they have no work for you without tickets but what they really mean is they have no work for you, because if they needed a chainsaw operator they would get someone else anyway.
  18. Or go anywhere near a climbers feet, there's HSE regs about that somewhere.
  19. Ok, but the chain oil one is specific to the brand I use but it should do. How on earth have you done the coshh without the data sheets? That doesnt make sense to me, the information you need is on the data sheets. Oh well up to you how you do it.
  20. Do you mean chemical data sheets? I have some, they are about 4-5 pages for each product, but they are easy to get, Clark forest website has some, but I can send you mine if you want. They are not a COSHH assessments though, you need to write your own ones of those, and the information required for it is in the data sheets, and blank COSSH sheets are availaible on the AA website.

    Wanted!

I think the lesson here is more than just meeting girls. You can be "into trees" we all are, but you have to know when not to be. If I talked about trees all the time I wouldnt have any freinds (except arbtalkers) let alone any lady friends!! People who work in many other industries are also passionate about their jobs but if they went on about it all the time you would get bored of them, so try and keep your tree stuff to yourself. When my freinds ask me how works is going is just say "fine thank you" and leave it at that, occassionally I'll go off on a rant about something but only to remind them why they shouldn't ask!!
  22. a 20 minute job is always going to be expensive in comparison though, economies of scale and all that. This guy is on about subbing work, doubt he'll get any takers at that price, there cant be many companies or climbers that need to hire 2 groundies with a chipper, if they do then they cant actually be set up for treee work. MAybe the odd freelance climber might get a private job and need some groundcrew/chipper.
  23. Yes, but how would working SRT change your liability to a third party? If you drop something on someones head as they pass under the tree then the method of climbing is the least of your problems. Its not personal cover that you have its PL, and that is more to do with your management of your worksite than it does to climbing methods. For any major claim it would go to an independant "expert witness" to decide if you are negligable, and only if the SRT was the cause of the incident would it be an issue. And they would look at how you assessed the risk of the entire job and how you went about it. Remember that if you fall out of the tree while using SRT or any other method then thats your tough luck and PL doesnt cover that, unless you injure someone that you land on!
  24. they are the business, and the they do bigger ones as well but £££££££££
  25. Any old karrimor etc rucksack off of e bay will be better than anything you can buy new these days, unless you want to get spendy and go for a big wall haul sack type thingy.
