  1. So, James, how would you score the job now its done. Out of three, with one point for each of the following The Job itself The customer The financial reward. Half points are allowed, so I suggest the customer scores .5. Making tea made up for the lawn issue, otherwise it would be zero. With the financial aspect, half point can go for quick payment even if its not that high. But waiting weeks for low payment, or very low payment scores zero. Only good money paid fast or very good money paid within reasonable timescale scores one point. And we already know the tree itsefl sucked, and the final result is not special, and you hated it, so anything more than zero is unlikely!!
  2. sorry if I came over too soft!
  3. No I agree there is no law saying we have to have a bank account, and I would be against such law on principle, but I dont see it as a right to deal scrap metal. Only qualified brain surgoens are allowed to be brain surgeons, surely if I want be a brain surgoen I have to qualify, and to be a scrappy metal collector a basic qualification should be to have a bank account. Just one bank account per traveler community would be enough. They are stealing the man hole covers and powerlines!! Something needs to be donw, and "no cash" scrap yards is a good way forward but not if it doesnt apply to the very people that it needs to apply to.
  4. Fair enough, we dont have reds here but I would be the same if we did. The only time I come into direct contact with them is when removing trees with dreys in, of course the dreys get destroyed but in the event of it being full of young we deal with them humanely, and with me being such a wuss that usually means leaving them to oneside and seeing what happens. If the mum collects them before I get a chance to carry out my "legal" (your words) duty and kill them then thats fine with me.
  5. What I mean about unecessary suffering, is poking a drey full of babies and letting them all fall out screaming and dropping to the ground and then battering them with sticks. Especially not a good idea if the client is watching! Take them out of the drey carefully and kill them humanely, or let the mum take them away.
  6. Of course I do. I am not saying dont kill them! Not at all, they can be killed if necessary. I am just saying unecessary suffering is not acceptable IMO, and if anyone is unhappy about killing them then my advice about letting the mum pick them up and take them elsewhere is perfectly valid. If that is illegal and you HAVE to kill them or take them home then please call the police!
  7. Really? But they if they were in the wild already then surely your not releasing them? I did work with a guy who took one home as a pet once. It was very small and he had to bottle feed it. It would go to the pub on his shoulder and run round stealing peanuts of everybody! Then he would call it and it would jump on his shoulder and go home!! Until it discovered lady squirrels and then he never saw it again!
  8. Oh, apparantly they are kittens!!!!!!!
  9. Sprogs will have to do, unless someone knows what baby squirrels are called, I dont know!
  10. Its not illegal to destroy the dreys, causing suffering to an animal is another thing though, but its quite easy to move a family if your taking a tree down. No need to not do the work.
  11. Yes you can destry dreys, at any time of year, they are rats! But, unacceptable suffering?? No, I would say there is no reson to cause any suffering to a squirl or a rat for that matter. If you want to destroy a drey with little ones in then put them in a rope bag, destroy the drey and leave the bag out somewhere (overnight if necessary) and the mum will come and take all the sprogs to a new nest. She will even come and do it while your having lunch if its all quiet enough. Gloves are a good idea!
  12. If its to the property that you are working for then it might be easier to ge them to call their supplier, their customer number will give them better access to that service than you will get unless someone can give you a direct number for that area (which I am sure someone here should be able to do).
  13. Thats crazy, no one has a basic right to deal in scrap metal, even if its not stolen, its still not a right! Its a business like any other, if travellers want to continue to do this kind of "work" then they can choose to get a bank account, and if not then stop doing it. Sorry about the loss of the splitter though!
  14. High stump just makes it a double stunt fell!
  15. No, a krab will do, but flexability is a problem IMO, i.e. it wont like any twisting. So a short length of cord is probably better as it allows twisting, and then like you say, no need for a tibloc. Also, the tibloc is a bit fierce on the rope, very pointy little teeth in it. I have one if you want to try it.
  16. One thing though.......... STUNT FELL???!!!! That would move your brash closer to the drag route?
  17. Tibloc on the spliced end side of the rope, with karabiner attched which holds the pulley under the prussik. Simple set up, similare to using a small prussik on that side holding a pulley under the hitch. Nicely made video, I like the non controlled speedline set ups, a bit like a vertical speedline but not quite vertical, just enough to shift the debris away from the base. Good stuff!!
  18. Stick with what you already know! I have electrics as my back up, not the other way round! I see it as a cheap and easy way to make a living. If you cant make it in electrics then stuff tree work!!
  19. Dont be SILLY!!!! My neighbour owns this........ Bargain Booze - Beer, Cider, Wine, Spirit, Shots, RTD and Grocery Offers I get a discount!!!!!!!!!!!! To be honest he (my neighbour) only owns a franchise, but it still works!!
  20. Yep, will do, I am not planning on competing though but will try and get there for saturday sometime.
  21. A freind of mine was asked once if he was a modern man. "what do you mean" he said. Well, would you buy your wife some sanitary products from the supermarket if she asked you to? His reply was "No fffing way would I ever go to the supermarket!!"
  22. By investment i mean office, financial, physical, mental. So far it has not been worth it by any of those definitions, but its early days yet. Glad you mention mental!! I dont believe anyone can achieve it without some mental strain/impact. The day after the assessment I had to go and finish the job that we did for the assessment. I got there and sat in a heap all day and was useless! Never felt like that before, I was just drained! But I had eaten zero the day before due to the stress of it all! I am still not sure that a small business, especially one that has a good local reputation already, will benefit. I think you need to look at it as personal achievment first and then anything else is a bonus.
  23. Yes, it didnt really need to do anything!! We wound a couple of sections, like the low flat branches over the roof, they all lifted up and away from the roof no worries. But we were only using 13mm rope so no where near its limits. Also, interestingly, we had 60m of rope in use so all the energy was absorbed in there, the Oak tree never moved an inch!!
