How do you sub contract out groundwork!? What you mean is self employed groundsman required. There is no such thing as sub contract groundwork, they will work for you on the days you hire them under your guidance and responsibilty. -

Could do with an extra pair of hands on tuesday this week, sorry its short notice. Would suit someone wanting some experience in the East Goucestershire area. It will mostly be stacking brash ready for chipping and then helping with chipping. There wont be any need for chainsaw use but someone with CS30 would be allowed to use a saw if the need arose, if they have PPE etc. but the main part (the dragging/stacking) does not need require any units and I can supply a helmet.

You shouldnt be up a tree if you rope is not long enough to get down in one go!! Change overs on the way down????!!! NO. Of course you can if you want, but you shouldnt need to in order to get down.

The front panel on my chip box is painted (badly) and is all peeling off. I need to do it again, its zintec steel, like the rest of the box, but the rest is only visible inside so didnt need painting. So, what make of paint on primer should I get for it? Peter?

If he was nice about it, and yhou agreed to the terms, then fair enough. I was just thinking that maybe he didnt deserve to get the work done. I am scoring him .5 out of 1 then for customer points. Did he make you tea?

Yet he wanted the work doing? Or was he forced to have the work done? Was he nice about it? i.e. "if you can manage to not lower on to the grass that would be great" or was he stroppy about it?

James, tell us more about the client. Did he really say something to you about going on the grass?

Gibbon, you cant have it both ways i.e. you cant agree how long a day is and hourly rate, then moan if they want to pay you half when you get a job done in half a day. Its got to be one or the other. But the important thing is to find out, and then agree on how long there is on a job. If its got a day on it, then its a day no matter when you finish it, but if you take longer than a day then your not going to be asked back so upto you to do it in the time allowed. To the OP, the other thing you need is to be the best climber in your area, if not then price is the only thing you can compete on.

BTW, thats why its actually best to buy chippers on the monthly rather than paying in full up front. If you pay £13K+ in one go for a chipper you will only get about 5k tax relief that year. might as well keep the 13K in the bank.

I believe with saws and small stuff you can put 100% in the first year and thats it done, no need to worry about depreciation, but not with vehicles chippers etc. Not sure what the amount has to be to class as small stuff. for example, if I buy an new MS200, it can be classed as repairs to my old one and just written off in one year, same with ropes etc. As far as I now, my accountant only works out depreciation for my chipper and truck and then maybe the larger saws that really are an asset rather than just a cost.

Yes, in a perfect situation crane+TM plus nice sunny day, everyones happy. But putting all that together is not easy, so you can see why others didnt put in a price. Next time you look at stuff like this you will plan it differently.

FTR I think you did well under the circumstance as well, not knocking the work put it, just seems like bit of a muddle.

I dont pick and choose waht makes me the most money, its not all about that, I do nice jobs for nice people for less money, but you have to have 2 out 3. Money, people (customer usually) and the job itself. 2 out of those three need to be good. Any one of those being good is not enough to make up for the other two. IMO that is, thats just how I like things to be.

No, I think that is their perogative, and right, to put in for what they want. But, yes if they advertise that they do any kind of work then they should, but they definatly dont have to. The job is to make a living, not just to do what people want.

Just watched the video, fingers in the cut at 1.20 !! I'm not shy of one handing but I dont put my fingers in the cut with the saw, especially with a crane lifting the load. But, I think you were probablly a bit nervous and stressed about the whole thing, so stuff can happen like that. Looks like lots of space underneath, I would have rigged the whole thing and kept the crane money even if it took longer, that way I can wait till decent weather and do it when I felt like it.

I cant help thinking that the "other companies" know a lot more about how to turn a job into profit, and when thats not going to work they dont they dont quote. Booking in cranes on jobs that rely on other companies/agencies etc. is a sure fire way to lose money, plus you cant predict the weather in advance and choose the right day.

I dont blame him for trying but he does state it needs to be someone who knows what they are doing. Also, if he said "take the timber and I'll clear the debris" then it would be more reasonable, but I am sure he want the whole lot cleared. Not sure how it would work though, if someone comes and picks up the timber and says thats it, he cant hold off on paying them until its finished properly? If they pay him the 99p (or whatever) on arrival then how is he going to stop them just taking a trailer full of wood and going! That would be worth the 99p!!

Thats because it really is something you have to figure out for yourself. Just see waht it is they want doing, and what hoops they need you to jump through before your allowed to work on their site, and price it how you want. If you dont get it your too high, it really is that simple.

I am not sure the tree can be considered the winner in that situation!

If you want a price guide then you could easily blow £500 on kit, and £1K if you wanted to.
