  1. Strava is just an online tracking program for cycling, using a smartphone, lets you see how fast everyone else is. Interesting point about groups, but I need to go with groups to start with so I learn what I'm capable of. I had a road bike about 6 years ago and hated it and sold it, this time I want to learn to love it and maybe could go on my own, but would rather go offroad on my own at present. I go sundays with the triathlon club, they do different rides each week (on a six week rotation) and with different objectives on each ride, all good so far but many cancelations due to weather and that fact that its a friggin sunday morning! I have to plan my staurday nights a bit differently these days! Oh, how things have changed!
  2. Thanks Mick. It is nice, just getting used to it. So different from a days MTBing which is just a fun day out, road biking is something that can quite easily be no fun at all, so keeping it enjoyable is a challenge (this is my opinion so far) but on a nice day with a good group it is ok, excpet for sharing the road with truck etc. It was 45% from wiggle, so a tad over £900 not including the tri bars and pedals. Do you use Strava Mick?
  3. 80's steel mate!! 1988 that one!! I'm more precious about the old bike tbh it got some salt damage after one ride and can't go on like that, it's one of very few 88 Trekkers left, and the only xt version that I'm aware of. So it's worth at least £50 !! The carbon fibre is modern junk in comparison, just a tool to do a job with. I do like it though, carbon fibre is far more forgiving than I thought, similar to steel, both of which way nicer than aluminium!
  4. Sun comes out and it feels like we have all the time in the world! PMSL!!
  5. Yep top third would be my aim for most things these days, not quite there with the dualthlons yet!! I did the duathlons and last years mountain mayhem on the Cannondale, but the trekker is now a road beast, its really fast but heavy. So I used that in a short triathlon and was overtaking a lot of road bikes. Its just that it has 26in wheels so looks a bit odd, and it has a rear U-brake, but its 24yrs old so its geometry is far more like a road bike than a mountain bike.
  6. Its not so much the rating of the rings its the position. Side d's are not suitable for a hanging position and so shouldnt be used in this way, its nothing to do with if they are strong enough, of course they are strong enough, but the position is wrong. TM and sequoia only as mention above. So it ok to put a lanyard round a trunk, on side d's, while advancing your main line, but its not advised to have it over a branch and sit in it while doing so. Doesnt mean you cant, ever, just that its not meant to be done that way.
  7. I always work out my position as a percentage of the total number that took part, so you get a good comparison no matter how big the race is. I came in at 42% of the field in both my age group (oldies) and overall. You came in at 35% which is very good. I've done three duathlons now and one super sprint triathlon which I did on the bike you picked up for me! I have converted it to a road bike, but now its for general use and I have bought a proper carbon road bike. Wiggins' fault!
  8. What duathlon did you do? I did one last sunday (10th feb) which was one of the wettest days weve had in ages!! It was horibble but only 2/10/2 miles so all over fairly quick. 20th in my age group out of 60 or so I think. Done on a retro bike of course, a 1992 cannondale.
  9. I got left behind a lot!! To be clear I worked with him, hardly ever climbed with him cos I wasnt in the same league by a long way. He actually wouldnt come to the climbing wall with us (mile end) because everyone would stop what they were doing and watch him! He was only about 19/20 at the time but so good it was sickening.
  10. So how did you get this particular job? Did you undercut any of the 16 tree companies around you to get it? If so then no wonder they dont give free training to anybody.
  11. I used to do a lot, but I worked with some very good climbers (before going into tree work) and always felt rubbish in comparison, although I was ok really. I worked with Neil Gresham for a while, and his then girlfriend who died in the Verdon Gorge and it was all very sad. Neil has gone on to climb all over the world and write books etc. I guess trees took over as something I could be good at on my own terms. (not sure when that will happen). I even climbed with big Ron Fawcett BITD!!! That was an awesome experience.
  12. No, but I do remember catching all sorts of colds etc when I gave up smoking, in fact everytime prior to that when I tried to give up I got a nasty cold, just goes to show what the body can cope with as long as you feed its addictions, take away the drugs (nicotine) and your body cant cope with withdrawal and colds etc all at once. Stick with it and hopefully it will help you never go back to smoking!
  13. I thought it might be zero radius, wasnt sure so put <1m to make the point but yes I think your right, its a thoeretical amount it could lift straight up.
  14. The tonnage of a crane (the amount it can lift) is based on <1m of reach. So yes a crane can lift more than it weighs straight up into the air. As soon as you go out sideways the amount it can lift goes down very fast. So a 200t crane may only lift 500Kgs at full sideways reach. This is why tree work with crane sis risky, instead of putting a load down away from a crane its picking an unknown load up at a distance away from itself.
  15. Yes they can invoice you, and they will!!! But it will take weeks to fix that way. So best to just go home!! If you ring bt you are stating something that you doesnt help anybody, the person who rents the line must report an unknown fault (not say XYZ tree services did it) and bt promise to fix faults in 24hrs so it should work out well.
  16. One thing that has happenned to me is the customer says they have a cheaper quote, and months later you pass by and the work is not done, they simply changed their mind but didnt know how to say so. Tree work would be great if it wasnt for the customers!
  17. Yeah, I suppose, if you had it all set up perfect and someone broke the speed limit or was drunk, then their failiure to comply with various laws would be to blame for the accident rather than the contractor. So when I said the accident proves its not set up right, then that was a bit of a broad statement. Other factors coudl cause the accident, and the contracotrs cant really allow for every type of ignorance from the public.
  18. Tell the business that they need to report a fault, and thats it!! Its not his line (he doesnt own it) so he cant make you fix it. No one can stop you getting in the truck and going home. But you really do need to pursuad the business to report it, and they will have it fixed in 24hrs (thats BT promise to customers) but if you report it your self it can take 2 weeks to get sorted, tell the business that (very politely) and hopefully they will see the sense in them calling bt.
  19. Yes, jumping the light is illegal (I think, are temporary lights covered by traffic law) but if you drop a branch on the car thats breaking through then you have allowed that situation to happen and so your are wrong. If your set up isnt working (an accident proves its not working) then its wrong. But you wont be guilty of any breaches in HSE stuff, but doesnt mean your not liable. You have to make it work so there are no accidents, and in the video here there was a close one but no accident so no real problem, they are probably still working like that today, and in general they are doing enough to make it safe as it can be.
  20. Sounds right to me. If no public exposure then no need for insurance. Public liability is for YOUR liabilty to a third person i.e. the public. It doesnt protect her (the climber) for anything. If your not employing her then you dont need EL insurance, so dont bother with it. Of course if she injures herself then thats on your concience but no more than if a freind falls off a bike while out for a ride with you. As long as shes happy to do the climbing and wont sue you for any injuries, and the public arnt exposed so they wont sue YOU for any injuries/damage caused by YOUR choice to get a climber freind in rather than hire a proffessional. (your freind may well be a proffessional but not while working for you in this manner she isnt, she's a freind).
  21. Does anyone know what kind of heat might build up in the zig zag? Could it be a problem I wonder?
  22. It's a difficult situation for sure!! £200 cheaper sounds a lot! Can't blame her fur taking the cheaper job, maybe yours was within what she expected and the other one was an evening unexpected surprise??? Don't know the situation but I don't think you should discuss the price on site? Even if they ask you should shy away from giving a price, but if you do and they accept it there and then (even with a hand shake) they still might have other tree guys due to visit and quote and so its bound to happen that some change their minds and cancel on you. Your not doing anything wrong but that's how it is these days. A written quote either posted or emailed will give them time to get ALL other quotes in and then they can decide. Even with complex things like bank loans, mobile phone contracts etc. the customer ways has a cooling off period during which they can change their minds, and I suppose you need to allow for little old ladies to do the same.
  23. Which, I think, is what Adam was getting at. BTW Mick, I've crossed to the dark side and bought a road bike!
