  4. life jacket is to keep person on thier back with head/face out of water to breathe bouyancy aid is to enable person to swim on front or back, is easier on back but will not put the person there automaticly and can still float face down bouyancy aid is easier to swim with

  9. hi martin, was good to talk to you today, first chance ive had to read this, cant believe i was the first in 50 to correct, if you need any more help, feel free to contact me
  10. i would go back, collect all the logs and leave. also i would tell him that i have banked the cheque and advise that he stops the cheque, which will cost him money oh , you dont bank the cheque cos that will cost you i dont need customers like that, neither do you his aim is to get the load discounted ( been there done it...3 times, no more) now i would rather remove produce from site
  11. to clear this up...... i fill an exact M3 measure with loosly tipped in firewood, as peter quoted it does not take into account the air as was Pete Bannister's point which i missed (and he missed my quote of me missing that) my measure is a cubic meter of loose tipped firewood, it is also advertised/ described as a loose tipped cubic meter of firewood therefore the customer gets an exact measure of a cubic meter of loose tipped firewood. (usually more, but never less) yes it has air in it, but so would a stacked cubic meter of wood but that is not what it is described as. most of my customers could not tell the difference in species of wood, but there are a few who can, and i have converted some hardened "i'll only burn hardwood" customers over to softwood after they have tried it. can i also point out that not all deciduous trees are hardwood, and not all coniferous trees are softwood. Also some conifers are deciduous and some broadleved trees are evergreen e.g larch and evergreen oak
  12. i see the point now:blushing:
  13. sorry mate, but you cant ( not that i fully understand your statement) quote in bold, i accuratly measure my volume for delivery, not when split fresh, there is no estimation second quote in bold you will most definatly find the wood at the top of the pile is much drier and contains less moisture than the wood in the center of the pile, no matter what the size of the pile is. also if i had to by scales for what ever reason to weigh the wood, then that just pushes up the price of the product for the customer, and i have no available use of a weighbridge. but thanks for your input, its very helpful:thumbup1:
  14. well the question was....does anyone know how to work out the calorific value of firewood??? so far the answer is no!! but many have pointed in the direction of results......thanks:thumbup: how were these results produced is my next dubious question i ask because i am sceptical as there is so many (for want of a better word) old wives tales about wood. i know how many woods burn and how well, but many a person on here will argue with my results without having tried the wood themself, but go on what has been heard, others do try, but then find it hard to persuade others. we need to educate the public and if we arent prepared to find out for ourselves, then how can we educate??
  15. thanks guys for that, but i want to do the tests myself if poss, and encourage others to do the same..... there is too much hearsay and guessing in firewood values
  16. does anyone know how to work out the calorific value of firewood. being fedup of all this rubbish about what burns best at what moisure content and whatever species, i would like to try and work out the calorific value of species of wood for firewood please can we keep this sensible and not argue over what is the best wood:001_rolleyes:
  17. i am going to guess that you are martin from wood fuel wales, the apparent welsh assembly government funded body set about to become the welsh authority on fuelwoods. if so i am appauled that you are asking these questions on here when you are supposed to be setting the standards for our industry. by the time this thread ends ( and i suggest you use the search facility on this forum to look for other threads along this nature) i hope you will be advising that "dumpy bags" are made in all different shapes, sizes and volumes, so buyer beware!! and seller state volume. i also hope that you do know something of the industry and are not just trying to cover over the excellent work that the recently let go Jos worked hard to achieve. i am one of your members, and recently took a phonecall off you this week, at the same time i could not belive the questions you were asking me, of which i had to correct you in your quotes and terminoligy. please take some friendly advice and contact some of your members, ( you know who the good ones are, Jos did!) are research this properly before we all lose faith in what you are trying to achieve. please feel free to contact me directly if you need help
  18. ash is also in the same family as the olive tree and the wood contains a certain amount of oil which helps the fresh wood to catch easier than others. in my experience fresh ash is no better than any other fresh wood but lime will dry faster than ash
  19. thats done the rounds on facebook very big hit with us welshies and is hilarious, especially if you know Newport....... which incidently is where previous WTCC have been held and not far from this years location
  20. always found lime pretty good, burns nice and hot with a good flame, and eventhough it has a high moisture content when felled, it always dries out quite fast. i never turn it away for these reasons and an be a godsend towards the end of the season when fast drying woods are needed oh, even when fresh it can give off a good heat, but i wont recommend burning any fresh woods indoors
  21. shocking display of disrespect as sister sells recently died brothers uniform and medals to on a cruise:thumbdown: Fiancée of dead soldier upset as sister sells his medals to enjoy a cruise | Mail Online what a terrible thing to do, and will anoy more people than just dean, well done to the trader who just gave them back free of charge to the fiance though
  22. where exactly in se wales mate, i'm in cardiff, might be able to help
  23. yes as recently refered to on this site its all GOOD firewood though:001_cool:
  24. bleeding canker i believe, very common in mature/over mature hybrid grafted cherries dealt with loads of them down here, does cause heart rot in crown union and can travel down the stem from center out. thats from my milling days experiences
  25. to be honest mate, and i have processed arb logs for years, it is a lot of work and takes a lot longer than the nice forestry stuff at 8 ft long and 10-12" diam which is fast, very fast and with the added hastle of having to move it in such small lengths, where it does'nt stack nicely and is full of air, just adds to the woes. i wont tell you what i would pay you for it, but i will tell you that if you sold it for seasoned firewood, you would not fail to sell out and you would make a lot more money than what it is worth now just sitting there, and slightly more than what it would go for un-processed good luck mate, i wish you all the best rekon you got 60 processed cube there too
