  4. are you sure mate, isnt there one behind tescos in pontypridd???? and theres plenty in cardiff outskirts they may not be on your doorstep but they are are close enough to pay you a visit!!

  6. whilst out driving in disco, the car infront was sliding in the snow, so cocky me overtook him, i stopped to tell him to give up as there was no chance he was going to get up the hill, when he told me his passenger was a blind school kid. so did i give the kid a lift home and leave taxi driver there....no. i towed him up over the series of hills, and then stayed with him till he got the kid home. he did offer me a tenner, but i refused it and said"" if theres no good will at this time of year, then when is there any"" i did feel good for the rest of the day:thumbup:
  7. Hooray! We've all just landed on the same playing field:-) Jayvee. No fights allowed on here, it's called strong debating. I understood where everyone was coming from, but when it's so busy like now, I like to have a simple system where I can get the wood out quick. Problem I have found is people always want the cheapest and not always the best
  8. So 1 m3 of loose tipped stacks upto roughly 0.63 of a m3. That's what I sell...... As Jayvee said :-) System works so why change it. It aint broken, so not gonna fix it. Price per loose cube is £90 Price per stacked cube would be £140 Not many want to pay the £90, even less would pay the £140 (all figures are as examples) Nice thought albedo, but I think I will stick to my 10 yr old meathod, which if I read Jayvee correctly, is an accepted method
  9. For 10 years now I have sold by the loose tipped cubic meter, and even have the truck bed separated into cubic meter sections. The customer sees this when I deliver to them, they then have the chance to accept or refuse the load. Job done!!!! 10 years and still growing, must have done something right I have never quoted by the " load", always a volumetric measure. To sell by the stacked m3 would just cost the customer more due to extra labour involved. The job is hard enough as it is, let's not make it any worse.......... Please
  10. Pine is apparenty austrias preferred firewood
  11. am i right in thinking that birch and alder dont produce fruiting bodies either and have naked seeds, alder especially has its seed capsule very similar to a cone, but both release the seeds to the wind
  12. unfortunatly, there always seems to be an exception to the rule. yew is needle bearing and produces a fruit a quick google search will always bring up the above quoted statement, and many copies, but, when you delve deeper there are differences of opinion. i'm not saying anyone is wrong or right, but, the one i prefer is the following from wikipedia Structure Hardwoods have a more complex structure than softwoods. The dominant feature separating "hardwoods" from softwoods is the presence of pores, or vessels[1]. The vessels may show considerable variation in size, shape of perforation plates (simple, scalariform, reticulate, foraminate), and structure of cell wall (e.g. spiral thickenings). Pores present in hardwood, but absent in softwood Hardwood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia i always prefer science to hearsay and speculation, but even this one is not as scientific as it could be
  13. both!! it charcoals down nice a grinds into a fine powder, ideal for mixing into gunpowder.................... good firewood too:thumbup1:
  14. sadly, the geek that i am, have done excessive research into the wood classification and its origin. boring i know!!!! i have yet to find a definitive answer to this question, it is on par as to "what is the best wood to burn" answer.... whatever you can get for free, imo not all deciduous are worthy of hardwood status, and many coniferous are worthy of the hardwood status. maybe its time ( and i have often thought about how to get this one going correctly) to get a collective thread goin on tree species and thier qualities from the professional view point how we percieve the tree, the wood, its durability, afterlife properties and qualities, but most importantly for this thread, its firewood properties without comments like "" its crap" and " waste of time" i started the thread of whats burninig in your stove 2010, and there are quite a few burning conifer there, i'm still burning leylandii, and have never had the house so hot!!! and surprisingly, as we have quite an efficient stove, it burns well and for some time. i think its not so much about what you burn anymore, but, what you burn and what you burn it in!!! if you dont control the air in the stove correctly then imo its like leaving the door open on the fridge. and those poems........ well they just rhyme and were written in the times of open fires in thatched roof houses, i think we have come on since then, and anyone who quotes them as gospel in thier firewood business, really does not know thier business
  15. i guess they come already split open and cut down to size:lol:
  16. its mental............but 100 phone calls in one day, 65 answer machine messages, 2.5 hrs to ring them all back and i took.............. .................. .................. .................. 8 yes 8 orders:thumbdown: all just ringing round for the cheapest price

Have spoken to some of the boys and seen thier work around. in bedlinog he is "apparently" regarded as a local hero for giving so many of the locals employment! good on him for that i have never had any dealings with him though so do not know much i'm afraid so cant comment on the above post
