  1. This used to be the role of the forestry commission planting land and then selling it to reinvest in more land and planting expanding our forests from a miserable 8% to a still miserable 15%. Then came along a load of Nimbys shouting that you cannot sell off our FC woodlands so now the FC do not have the finance to purchase new land and plant virgin woodland. In my opinion we have quite sufficient wasteland (non productive farmland) to expand uk forests from 15% to 30% in the next 10 years if the Nimbys allow you to do it.
  2. Go to your nearest Merc Commercial dealer you should be able to order the front link parts over the counter. Looking at my MB Trac manual you will need to quote SA T 36 144 which details all the front linkage parts.
  3. We have set up our operation to cater for this demand as woodfuel supplier producing G30 chip, woodpellets, briquettes, in addition to normal logs and kindling. By having solar kilns we can guarantee a moisture content of less than 20%. What makes the operation work is the ability to turn any type of "waste" virgin timber into fuel instead of being reliant on processor sized cordwood. For security of supply we are actively purchasing woodland in a 25 mile radius as well as planting new woodland.
  4. I am pleased a market already exists. Could only find french producers whilst doing my research. Can you remember what size diameter pellets they were 6mm or 8mm ??.
  5. Get your log cabins and storage barn up and then apply for change of use on your storage barn to industrial workshop units. At the moment you might even get grant support for small rural units. Again speak to local land agents for best advice or your local NFU or CLA office.
  6. I use woodchip produced from my heizohack chipper but need to put through a hammermill before it is compressed in my briquette press. As previously said moisture content is critical and needs to be below 15% for my briquette press or below 12% for my pellet press which we achieve in our solar kilns.
  7. I will be making poo pellets later this year but not for burning it will be as concentrated compost, Starting with chicken manure and then horse manure both on wood shavings as bedding base. What has put me off has been the cost of the special die which I need. Also making grass pellets but again for horse feed not for burning.
  8. Caladonian Forestry is were I get my parts just speak to Jim. If anybody bends there Palax combi rocking bed I have a spare which is only slightly bent but repairable. Open to offers as new one cost me £750 but was contracting at the time so could not afford the time to straighten the arms.
  9. Our heizohack is protected by a shear bolt in addition to the stress control and can confirm that it works due to stupid operator error.
  10. Biggest gain is not having to handle logs again once you have placed the timber on the saw deck but this requires being organized in our case straight from conveyor into IBC containers for drying and delivery direct to customer using 3 point pallet fork on tractor.
  11. No help at all really as the waste directory is set up to comply with the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 neither of which applies to virgin tree arisings obtained by tree surgeons. The material is classified as low risk by the Environment Agency and covered by there standard paragraphs 3,5,7A, 12, 13,15,21,and 30. Any farm with these exemptions can run as a tree station however not all farmers have applied for the exemption even though the majority of them are free. Anybody want a site close to Bolton to tip (free) timber or chip can use our farm just send a PM for details.
  12. Registered with who. Our farm is registered with the Environment Agency but it is not registered as a commercial waste disposal site as we do not accept commercial waste only virgin timber as authorised by the Environment agency.
  13. Biomass prices have a long way to go before it becomes uneconomic to generate electricity. What I cannot understand is why if you have the fuel you dont use it to generate your own electricity. Even a small 250kw generator can use 5000 tonnes of woodchip per annum and generate revenue of £250k. On the continent the obvious route would be a co-operative but that seems alien to the "British" way.
  14. I know of a forward control MB Trac thats for sale at reasonable price if your interested.
  15. If you had been in Lancashire you could have hired mine but Peterborough is a bit far. Not sure a timber trailer is really the right thing for a lot of road use. If I have a lot to haul I put the timber crane on the 3 point link and use a proper drawbar trailer with air suspension and air brakes. Far safer than a standard timber trailer.
  16. Container drawbars make good logging trailers and normally go cheap due to having no body. Easily sorted by the addition of a container flat or in my case 4 container posts welded to a salvaged lorry flat.
  17. Really does annoy me this % margin. One of the shop keepers I wholesale briquettes to only makes 20% on the stuff he sells so I offered to sell him my briquettes with a 25% markup. I went back to see why sales were sluggish only to find he had increased the price to 125% mark-up. I think it is pure greed on the part of the shop keeper. Needless to say his sales have stopped due to the price hike.
  18. Hardly flatpack but I do give my customers the option of a standard fencing panel attached to the top of my IBC containers. Simple but effective.
  19. Can take it all and have log trailer and crane if you want a hand with larger dismantle.
  20. I did one recently for a local school plus 30 large rings as seats for the kids to sit on. Went back later and was treated like a hero by the kids who loved doing lessons out in the sun.
  21. Very happy with my Palax saw blade for upto 12 inch timber with an additional splitter for doing larger rings. As for timber trailer I have a 9T Kesla from caledonian forestry. The crane can also go on 3 point link so we can use with our 16 tonne drawbar trailer for road haulage.
  22. Invest in a solar kiln. Dries down to less than 20% in 3 months during the summer and takes 6 months in winter, all cut and split and stacked in IBC cages for good air circulation.
  23. Milly We only grow coppice willow as a weed on wetland next to a stream. Any drier land we plant ash coppice instead.
  24. Skyhuck Quite right, Although I have improved the design by increasing capacity by 50% by using a straight sided tunnel. Doorways modified to dutch barn design to give wider opening and 4x1mtr concrete bog mats laid to allow forklift access.
  25. Milly If you Google Short Rotation Willow best practice you will find an excellent paper on the do's and dont's produced by the Irish government who have done a great deal of practical work on the subject. The document is very long but covers all you need to know.Personally I find rod harvesting easier to control moisture content rather than direct chipping. If you still have any questions I will try and answer.
