Joy Is that true of the baler twine. I use it on my mini round baler and have bales over 6 year old which are still in perfect condition. It has become a problem as unlike sisal it will not rot down in the compost heap.

Browns sliding top. Does the job and very safe if you use the logging guard. Might upgrade to a tungsten blade similar to the one on my palax.

The netting looks like standard round bale baler mesh attached around a standard IBC Plastic insert with insert removed once wrapped.

Unfortunately these briquette presses can be and are used to compress nearly anything wood, plastic, paper,steel, so unless you have a specific standard that the briquette complies with you could be buying anything. Trading standards are starting to prosecute companies for selling briquettes that do not comply with the domestic fuel supply regulations but as yet it is very rare and difficult to trace due to the still large quantity of imports.

Unfortunately any grant scheme is not straight forward but dont be put off even if you dont get a grant the exercise of applying concentrates the mind.

I just get very annoyed with all this hardwood v softwood debate. Its bad enough trying to convince the public that split logs can be either hardwood or softwood the big issue being moisture content but to apply the same rule to briquettes is silly when the maximum moisture content of either hardwood or softwood will be 15% otherwise the briquette press will not work. Problem you have supplying wholesale is 20% Vat rate instead of 5% direct to joe public.

tac1 It all comes down to the manufacture. For Hardwood we need about 70 bar pressure to form a dense briquette. If we input softwood at the same pressure we would get the problems you describe but the manufacturer of the machine is aware of this hence the recommendation that for softwood 100 bar pressure is used forming a dense block without the sawdust problems. Its this higher softwood pressure which makes the softwood briquettes so similar to hardwood briquettes. Not all briquette machines will work at these higher pressures. I doubt whether you will have had any of our briquettes as we try and distribute within a 25 mile radius of manufacture and do not sell on the bay.

I would offer FOC if I kept the timber and was within 25 miles of my home base. It might sound cheap but if I am already paying £20 a tonne for roadside collect the extra cost of extract is minimal.

philg Who are you trying to kid. I manufacture both hardwood and softwood briquettes and due to the high density of my product you will have great difficulty without being told which is hardwood and which is softwood. They both burn equally well and produce very little ash.

Unfortunately the biomass plants approved are very inefficient using over twice as much fuel as the best European plants. I have very little sympathy with DECC who refused my Austrian designed plant as being to sophisticated approving the white elephant of Stevens Croft instead. If we used biomass micro CHP plants we could achieve efficiencies in excess of 80%.

Local Aldi was selling bags of logs approx 10 in a bag for £4.49 looked like softwood but it was so wet when put into the bag a white fungus was actually growing through the mesh of the bags.

Treedave More or less standard 2 tonne diesel forklift truck. Only difference to normal was a full cab so that when I tip out (rotator) woodchip I am protected from dust (health & safety). The mast has 6 foot of float before it starts raising the main mast so I can get in the polytunnels and stack 2 high. (Failed to work once and punched hole in polytunnel roof) Did look at all terrain forklifts but cabs where to high to fit in the polytunnels plus they get a bit wobbly when at full stretch unlike solid tyres.

I use IBC cages so 100m3 would only be 5x5 x 4 high so what would you do with the rest of the barn.

If you wait 5 years you will be very cheap at that price. Just look at the number of Biomass plants going in on your doorstep all competing for your timber. Dont be put off with Jenkinson price as it will go up once you have competition on your doorstep. In our costings generating is currently still profitable at £80 per tonne delivered so I think your local log customers could soon be in for a nasty shock.

Unfortunately wood is not sustainable due to the elephant in the room which has just been mentioned. UK biomass plants As you can see from the above map the dash for biomass has already started. If the plants were using the most efficient technology it would not be so bad but unfortunately that is not the case.

If you have 40k I would go for a grant which will add another 40% to the kitty. The discipline of applying for the grant and producing detailed business plans to support the grant application will focus the mind on what you really want to do. As for partners I could not work that way its difficult enough with the trouble and strife.

Make sure you get paid. Cash flow is king for a new company and every new client is a potential bad debt.

Anybody importing on a regular basis from America with room in a container for one of these crawlers or know of a cheap way to import.

If you want to pick it up yourself I have a flat trailer you could borrow on a standard 50mm ball and the flat deck is 6mtrs x 2.5mtrs (can easily be extended to 2.6 mtrs). Ask nicely at the shipping companies and some RoRo ships have a limited number of cabins for drivers but they dont advertise as there not licensed as passenger ferries.

Treedave Oxtrac is a bit pricey then. The Magnatrac is only $5k although PTO and hydraulics will be extra. I have asked for a price. Looking to use pto and hydraulics for log splitter, stump grinder, rotovator, flail, delimber.
