  1. Watch that dam film I think it's called. Shows the damage that man has done by damming some of the great rivers for power, irrigation etc. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

    Trousers

Also have a couple of pairs of the Steins. Incredibly hard wearing compared to the Stihls, comfortable and reasonably quick drying along with being relatively cheap. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. Yes, got an $8k fine. He was 83 and had to pay it back at $10 a week. Sold up and moved out of the area after drilling and poisoning nearly every tree on the reserve. We got him for one but he had done around ten. All mature trees too. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. We managed to catch one guy literally red handed. The poison had stained his hands red. I caught him pouring poison into a funnel in the holes. There was some media around it but not enough. I think now we intend to do some heavy media coverage and there's a heap of these signs to go up. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Ring barking, topping of street trees, removal of street trees and entire embankments of trees in some places. We have been loathe to make a big deal about it so far but things are changing. 5. It's usually a case of drilling holes in the trunk and pouring round up, escort, tordon etc. into the holes. Some are getting clever and using a granular, broadleaf herbicide. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  6. It was an idea that Brisbane city Council used with some success. You want to poison the tree to improve your view, we're going to make that view way worse than it was before the tree was poisoned. BCC hung strips of shade cloth from the limbs of the poisoned trees and then had a sign below explaining why. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  7. For those that don't follow on the FB page; Taupo district has been experiencing a spate of tree poisoning and hacking, mainly for views. Anything from this large Eucalyptus right through to entire embankments cleared and poisoned and a whole street of berm trees hacked. A new CEO came on board a couple of months ago and after falling on deaf ears with the previous CEO and senior management, we now have movement. This is the start, also on the cards is hanging shade cloth from the trees to make them as ugly as possible, bigger signs and a media blitz. Any other ideas are welcomed. 8. If you can't get up to the real thing then a trip out to Muir woods is about as good as you'll get. Heaps of outfits offer half and full day tours. They're not a patch on those further up the coast though. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  9. Had my top lip stuck together with super glue to save on stitches when it wouldn't stop bleeding have an accident. Good stuff Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  10. I gave up in the end and got a refund. Even that took several phone calls and much chasing. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  11. PM me, I might still have a copy somewhere. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  12. My subbie climber turns up with a 046 with a 22 and a 28 inch bar and two MS200's and he does everything I throw at him with those.
  13. I don't know the story or the background, only the outcome. Having said that; I know of plenty of outfits that A. Have ridden their luck with regard to H&S until it finally caught up with them and B. Have had under trained staff on jobs priced up by under trained and under pressure managers (I was one myself) so I won't comment on what did or didn't happen, what they did wrong with the fell etc. but rather, await the outcome of the investigation, if we ever get to read it. I will, however, agree with others in that if you're going to pull over a tree then the road should have been closed and pedestrians stopped from walking through. Two tree lengths is the rule here in NZ. Not sure what it is in the UK but would assume it would be the same if not greater. And while we're on the subject of almighty cock ups; line clearance bucket truck (MEWP) went over with a man in the bucket here the other day. See comment A. above.
  14. You're a sucker for punishment mate A mate of mine lives down that way, Cromwell I think, and he loves it and to be fair, the photos kinda back it up. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  15. How about talking to a couple of the local climbers and seeing if they'd be interested in a get together, bit of a BBQ, maybe a few beers after? Just a few hours rec climbing and make a few contacts. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  16. Nice looking bit of kit. Curious but barn doors on the back or just a low back? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  17. Due to several volcanic eruptions there is a solid pumice "pan" about a foot below the surface in most places around the Taupo district. This means we get lots of surface roots and have to do lots of root chasing. This was a Eucalyptus which, fortunately, grinds well when fresh.
  18. Stumps are like ice bergs. Two thirds of them you can't see.
  19. Oh, and red spider mite throughout was obvious.
  20. We have exactly the same problem here and trees aren't shaded and neither is the ground compacted. With the little bit of research i did I found that the Sorbus were susceptible to both insect damage and fungus. We're going to attack ours with a fungicide and insecticide and see if that works. Happy if someone with a little more knowledge has more info though.
  21. Just had PPE audits at work. Fading on a helmet is a fail. That's enough for me for the sake of a couple of hundred bucks. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  22. Having heaps of issues on the mobile with threads not responding when I tap to see them or clicking between participated, unread etc. have to close out of the app and reopen for a thread to open. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  23. Now see, why couldn't I explain it that eloquently. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  24. It isn't mine quite yet. Still have to get my mechanic to give it a once over. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  25. It relies mainly on procedures, correct use in line with manufacturers specs, correct training and that the employee is actually signed off. Then there's follow up training etc. as an example; guy in NZ put his foot into a chipper and lost his lower leg. First reaction is what an idiot, it's his fault everyone knows you don't do that. In the long run the company he worked for got fined because they cut the feed tray off to make digger feeding easier. If the feed tray is on you can't stick your leg in unless you climb onto the feed tray. If you climb on to the feed tray then you're at fault. If that makes sense. We're going through all this with my local Government employee AND my own company and its a very large can of worms. One of the things I hear regularly is; it's common sense. How do you measure common sense from one person to another? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
