1. Bleedin hell thats unlucky for him:thumbdown: Hope hes doing OK. Did he work in a pub or something?
2. Maybe I am hearing it wrong but I thought you said that someone off the streets can be up to speed in two weeks. Up to what kind of speed. We obviously havent differing views of what is classed as skilled and what isnt. Myself I think it takes more like 5 years to be up to speed rather than a fortnight. Of course there are different levels of skill and we are always learning, just like everyone else in every other job. You will no doubt find architects bitching about each other (probably more so than us) since they also take a pride in what they do and they are probably only as good as there last job Doctors, well its not very legal to practice medicine without a license I think. Plus they are usually above the law, quite untouchable and they know it. It takes some major major boo boo's to get struck off.
3. The kit also allows you to do a better job. I doubt you could do a good reduction or thin while hanging on to the trunk with one arm. I knew a lad that liked to climb sometimes without a rope so he looked hard! He could only do easy stuff though and did a piss poor job at that. He did a lot better when he did it properly though. The bit about the insignificance compared to child birth well you could say that about everything not work but all life experiences. I think people stamp their feet when they hear that what they do is S*** and anyone with no effort, training, skill, competence, brain cells etc could do exactly the same with minimum input.
4. Surely thats a bit patronizing dont you think?
5. I'll be one statistic for nicking boots with a saw:001_smile: I'll confess to being guilty a couple of times in hitting the steel toe cap but thats from just being lazy, if I was wearing a pair of hiking boots then I wouldnt have gone there.
6. I think you should always dress for the interview as you would while in the job. This works for me.
7. Company policy can be completely different to what is law. From July 1 2007, it is now illegal to smoke in the workplace in England, as part of new government legislation which was passed in the Health Act 2006. The ban applies to all workplaces and public places, public transport, work vehicles, restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes, shopping centres and offices. It is therefore imperative to know what is expected from businesses, staff, customers and visitors and for businesses to ensure that the new law is complied with. The ban extends to incorporate any public area which is either ‘wholly enclosed’ or ‘substantially enclosed’ – the latter meaning that places such as sports stadia, outdoor concert venues etc. will also be covered under the new legislation."
8. Its to do with smoking in buildings its against the law, and work vehicles.
9. The mewp v climber would be good as I can see that one causing more problems as time goes on ie the HSE will push it more and more imo. It could also mean the end of the top handle too!
10. Got to post 21 on page 3. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/15012-ms200t-idling-issue-3.html#post266986
11. Yeah but could they do that without you guiding them? I reckon I could perform a nice bit of brain surgery if I had a skilled expert talking me through every single step. Surely all you need for that is a steady hand and lots of knowledge, probably just like every other job there is out there. Lumping logs from one end of a garden to the other requires no skill. To safely, in a controlled manor, efficeiently and without damaging anything/anyone section down a big nasty tree over a house, conservatory, sandstone wall etc etc does take skill. I dont see how anyone can think it doesnt as long as they do it in the above manor. To crash it out, destroy the lawn, damage the odd roof tile, smash a few pieces of glass have a few near misses with the groundies, chip a few bits of sandtone and take twice as long doesnt require any skill and yep any muppet can do that that has a head for heights. Its in the manner we do things that shows are differing levels of skill imo. I'm sure I could bodge a fairly poor table and chairs together but that doesnt make me a chippie. I havnet got my head up my arse and dont diss what others do ie grass cutters(I've spoken to a few green keepers and there is a hell of a lot more to it than sitting on lawn mower) and especially groundies, which as we all know is a physically hard and very essential job. Some of us probably dont realise the skills we have and use, and some others think they have more than everyone else and should be bowed down to(work with a couple like that!)
12. I disagree with all the time serve=skilled stuff. I agree it does take a lot of time and experience to be highly skilled but just because someone has been in the game 10+years doesnt mean that they are good at their job. Experience and skill are not the same thing imo. You need experience to have skill but skill doesnt come with experience. I should know, I've been at it 15 years and I'm still crap.
13. Unless someone is in training how can they be classed as semi-skilled:confused1:
14. If your in dirty works overalls then I wouldnt let you get into a brand spankingly clean car!
15. I think youve missed the entire point of the thread mate. The vast majority of the arb companies arent AA approved. So from what I can gather the AA are looking into why that is and how they can change it. They either have to change our view (which is a lot of peoples minds to change) or find some middle ground ie they change which is a lot easier. Although it will no doubt be a bit of both since I bet there are a few people already looking at getting AAAC status just from the info AAtechie is giving out.
16. Works fine here and looks like some really nice pieces of kit:thumbup1:
17. Errr at least there is a minimum wage. I used to work on a farm 20 years a go for £1 an hour, and that was bleedin hard work. This is the problem it looks a lot more attractive (to some)to sit on ones butt and get dole than do some hard graft for a minimum wage. They dont see the benefits of working!
18. Some make of synthetic 2 stroke mixed at 50:1 bought in 25 litre tubs, reasonably priced but good stuff:thumbup1: And a 45 gallon drum of some make of chain oil that does exactly what the stihl/husky oil does but at a much cheaper price.
19. I think I've heard that using a pressure washer to blast them off can help! Also try attracting birds near to the tree ie hanging fat balls etc so they can eat the scale insect.
20. You cant do that with public money. Its not fair to say if you aint in this club you cant play. They can ask that you meet certain requirements ie work done to British standards HSE compliant etc but not that you have a certain badge. Which I fully agree with and I'm not dissing the AA especially since AA techie has enlighten us all a bit about it. But, I wouldnt be very happy at all if I couldnt tender when I could prove that I comply with all good practices but aint in the club. Otherwise what would stop my mate in an LA insisting that all tenders must have MRH approval (MesterH)
21. Excellent:thumbup1:
22. I like that:thumbup1: Just need to get the rest of my T&C on the back of my quotes:blushing:
23. When you say old machinery do you mean really old stuff or just saws say 10 years old etc? If its the former then maybe they were designed to run on a different type of 2 stroke than modern saws. If its the latter then narr modern 2 stroke is good stuff and if the saw is worn a new piston and rings should sort it.
24. IME its the ones who have been brought up by scrounger parents, they see them getting a roof over there head and a giro every week for doing nowt. Besides I think alot of people think tree work is a nice cushy job with loads of pay. Seen a few wanna be tree heros but as soon as they realise theres a bit more to it than climbing trees(like they did as a kid!) then they soon change there minds. It does seem that a lot of foreigners do work really hard for there money though.
25. Well that shows exactly how low they will stoop, and, well tbh I cant think of the words or sentence but they just plain suck! The amount of people that I have heard that have had accidents due to kit failure is absolutely zero. People have accidents because of negligence and miss use of equipment. Anyhow LOLER is law unfortunatley so I suppose I will just have to keep filling in and ticking those boxes every 6 months to keep the insurance and HSE happy:thumbup1: ( will obviously be doing it myself though )
