Reported to the police, they'd worn gloves as you could see the finger marks on the glass. Forensics came out but couldn't get anything. My Defenders a 1996 300TDi. So not new. The police did say they've been hitting the Land Rovers recently in Staffordshire. Martin

Last night me & the other half parked the 90 on a public supermarket carpark off the main bypass around Stone & went for a meal. We came back & discovered the car was unlocked & the steering lock had been smashed off. Thankfully they couldn't get it started because of the immobiliser. They got into the car by taking the glass out of one of the rear quarter lights in one piece and left it in the car. Nothing missing other than an emergengy £20 kept in cubby box, it was just the vehicle they wanted as they left stereo, gerber and mag light etc. So I've spent the day sorting out the steering lock & window. It's all back together & working once more. The only thing I want to order is some grills for the rear windows. Make sure your vehicles secure & get some added protection fitted. Martin

Im an Assistant Warden at our local Scout Campsite, so I do a lot of maintenance of both the grounds and building. Im also a climbing instructor for them. Martin

Check for an inline fuse. Either tagged on to the battery, ignition barrell or by the fuse box. Also check that the beacon has a good clean earth. Martin

We had a mini digger & the lift pump packed up on a saturday afternoon. The job needed to be finished. With a 2 ltr pop bottle strapped to the roll cage & a length of hose, I fed the fuel straight into the injection pump. Worked a treat, just had to watch the fuel level in the bottle. Martin

You need a 24mm Nylon Rope. They are rated at 12 tonne braking strain, and because it's nylon they have a bit of a streach factor so it smooths the towing out a little. The longest rope you can have for towing on the road is 4.5mtrs. It's also worth having a bridle rope so you can spread the load between the towing points. For this I use a 2 mtr endless sling. Is it a Runlock switch, so you can leave your engine running & take your keys out the ignition. Try starting it up, pressing the button with hand break on and not touching the pedals. Then see if you can take the keys out without the engine stopping. Martin

I've got a GKN overdrive fitted to my 300TDi 90. Makes the car a lot quiter, not sure about fuel saving as I use the extra top end it gives you. It took about half a day to fit. Martin

Thanks for the advice everyone. Think Im going to go for a Goodwinch 12,000 Tds winch with steel cable. Rol on the Indoor Offroad Show in Stafford in March. I can't fit anything to the back of the gearbox as my overdrive, sits in that position already.

Im thinking of fitting an electric winch to the front of my Defender and I was wondering what size winch to go for. The winch will be used mainly for self recovery and to assist with felling. Many thanks Martin

There are different sizes of caches. Micro, nano etc. Nano's can be a magnet the size of a bolt head stuck to the metal work looking like it's part of the object. Micro's are the size of film canisters. It's worth checking the online log to check it's been found recently & hasn't gone missing. It can get very adictive trying to find them. Martin

Me, the misses & the kids have been geo-caching for a couple of years now. It's great for the kids as it gets them out & about. We have been to places, that we would have driven past previosly. You can even get apps for your smart phones, so when your out & about you can see whats in your area. Martin

I've just fitted a 663 tractor battery to the other halfs 300TDi. It's huge & fills the battery box. Martin

Disco's suffer with the metal fuel pipe going porous where it comes out of the tank. This lets air into the fuel system. Take the plate up in the boot floor & cover the metal fuel pipes with grease. This will stop air getting into the system. If this helps change the fuel pipes. Martin

Ady, how are you findingyour new winch? Im thinking of putting one on my Defender after nearly getting myself and the trailer bogged in a farm gateway with axle deep mud. Could you also let me know what make of winch you have fitted please. Many thanks Martin

The part number for the bearing is SKF 6203-2RSH & came from simply bearings & only cost a couple of quid. Took me about 15 mintutes to change the bearing. The hardest part been getting the bearing retaining clip out, but all I had to do was drill into the edge of the casting to give me some where to get a screwdriver behind the clip. Martin

I was stopped by the police late one night. I was towing the other half's (who was in the passenger seat) horse box with the wrong number plate on. Just gave him both sets of vehicle details & he sent us on our way. They said they'd had a lot of boxes going missing. At least there looking out for us.

Tell me about it. Some of us have to live there. Should of gone up to Stone, much nicer town & got a few good restaurants. Dean I think you were stood next to me in the Buxtons stand, while the guy was cutting me my prussik cord. I came away with a hedge cutter hitch climber set up kelly kettle and a load of other bits & bobs. Martin
