  1. Have had my muffler modded on my MS880 for around 3 months now and had no problems. It's louder but not that louder, definately more powerful although I couldn''t say by how much. Starts and runs well but I think now uses a bit more fuel than before. Milling is great especially around the 2 foot mark - you fly through! A guy in the states did the muffler mod - Scott Wojastik. Although it blew out the modded pipe bit after half a tank of fuel (I got it rewelded) the design was good and he refunded me half the money. He hadn't done an 880 muffler before so it was a bit of an experiment. Got to be carefull cross cutting as it can start to singe the bark! Also tried this Oregon square ground chisel skip link chain. It's def faster then normal chain, still smooth and produces less sawdust (so the saw chips must be bigger...). I have 2x 100ft reels of this so if anyone wants to try it it's £.30 + vat a drive link (.404 .063). But I need to get some square chisels from Baileys as can't find any in the UK. This chain is only for soft wood as apparently hard wood will blunt it quickly... but I'll have a go cross cutting some oak later! 2. Are those the same husky non spill fillers that only last for 2 months? I went through loads of these and they always started to seize and play up very quickly. Moved onto the stihl version and it lasted 2 years... ...but maybe they've improved them now.
  3. I have been but how true is the whole 'you have to run it from new or it causes problems when it cleans out carbon deposits' thing is I just don't know... The only thing I think you may have to do if you changed over is perhaps alter the mixtures a touch but other than this I would have thought Aspen would be fine to put in older machines. The fellow at the garden machinery shop has tried it in loads of things and his take was '2 strokes run better on it' We need the Aspen fellow to explain more on this!
  4. I've had 3x MS880s and they can be temperamental. I use a 2 handed pull method to start and find that 29 times out of 30 I will pull it over on full choke (when cold) 4 times and it will fire on the fourth. Then half choke and it will start on the second, third or fourth pull. If it hasn't started after 5th pull on half choke then I go back to full choke. If it doesn't start then it won't and I take spark plug out to dry and leave for 10 mins When warm always try and start without any choke first. If doesn't start first pull or fire up then go back to full choke as if from cold. But in the vid below it kicked over after 1 pull on full choke from cold and 1 pull on half choke. Prob because of warm weather. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7UHAend92I]YouTube - Big Stihl modded MS880 and skip link square ground chiesel chain meets big log![/ame]
  5. Yes shouldn't be long to go now before you're looking to do the big unstack!
  6. Cheers Jon but I'm really looking for someone who has one and wants to do a planing service by the hour (I don't have 3 phase here!)
  7. Bit of a punt but is there anyone that knows of anyone else that has a large industrial planer/thicknesser near me? There's a firm Farwells do but they've been too busy to do any recently.....
  8. You can get it delivered but it's expensive on carriage... unless you get 56 cans (of 5l) and then delivery is free. I just bit the bullet and got a large consignment. You can get chain oil as part of the consignment. I've been using it for 5 years now and still can't understand why very few others don't want to spend the extra money to pay for it......
  9. Oregon are bringing out some very lightweight type Cs soon... they look and feel lighter than anything else that's out there. I'll try and get Les to stick some pics up.
  10. The non spill filler cap is something I've been wanting a long long time. You haven't got time on a rainy day to start decanting fuel from an Aspen can to your favourite non spill can. They work very well although they can form a very tight seal and you have to wait a few seconds before the fuel starts to move. A big bonus is it fits all my saws from smallest to largest where the Stihl and other non spill caps didn't fit the smaller saws. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uP7BG566vE[/ame]
  11. Tree two sounds unbelievable! But I'd have an arrangement to be there when it was felled just to check for shake first.... I'd ask whoever owns the tree what sort of money they are after first as it could be a lot lower than what you may offer. If it's higher then you can start negotiating.
  12. Sound can leak through the muffs... Milling all day today and got very hot... ear muffs almost make a seal with the sweat so if you pull them off quickly damn it makes your ears hurt!!
  13. I'd say maybe £120 a slab if dry - loverly stuff!
  14. Excellent Stevie - I particulary like the bit about not talkign about football!!
  15. I have a 42" woodlandpro (cannon) bar for a Husq. Chains you would prob be better getting of Justin. It will also fit on a 395 but bear in mind the standard pitch chain for a 395 is 3/8 and guage is .058 where the standard on the 3120 is .404 guage .063. So you would either have to a) have a 3/8 nose sprocket on this bar which can be done or b) put a .404 drive sprocket (or rim if rim and sprocket set up) on your 395 when using this bar and chain with it.
  16. I'd offer around the £4 mark as well if you're having to fell it... Sorry to hear about your walnut John that is a choker!
  17. Well they both begin with D So it's pretty obvious how I got so confused Dear oh dear 37 and dementia already starting to grow its ugly roots....!
  18. I can see there's a tiny bit of mould on them but they look fine to me... And if they burn well then alls good. I wouldn't worry about it.
  19. Hmmm.... that one in the picture looks much better than mine! I can see what you mean Dave it wouldn't be that hard a job to do.... ... but I'd as likely still make a mess of it Sounds like your one is working fine though. It's one of those things a metal detector - after you've used one a few times how did you ever do without!
  20. I don't know if that dectector I use is just a scaled down version of a full sized one Dave - I think it's more designed for looking into wood... but I'd have to check up on that. Either way it's robust and has been an absolute life saver when looking for metal in trees as it will detect even a paper clip Lent it to someone while I was away recently but let me know if the one you've fixed doesn't work out and I'll dig out the details.
  21. I have to say from an exhibitors point of view the AA show is expensive when you look at how much area you have and the attendance numbers. Also 2 years ago I was charged a ridiculous amount for the ropey wood I was given for demoing the mills on. Even more ridiculous when you are on a woodland estate IMO. And it just made me think 'money grabbing .....' That left a bad enough taste in my mouth not to return... But I appreciate what you're doing Paul so well done on the thread!
  22. You learn something new and all that! Thanks Cracker I always thought you needed the engine running for oil to flow.
  23. Well the farmers a friend and so it's more of a favour than a strict by the hour rate re the felling. Also maybe I wasn't clear but I'll get at least 3 to 4 large pieces of furniture out of that oak butt as well as being able to sell a bit... I'll keep tabs on how much it's cost me/how much it makes me but I can't see myself losing out. I'll put some pics up when I mill it. The thing is some of the wood lying around in peoples fields their not fussed about whether it's moved or not - So if you want it you have to offer them something for it otherwise why would they bother? Timber that is felled in course of tree surgery is different and I generally don't pay anything unless it's something special because the grab's expensive. And with this wood you don't really know what you're getting...
  24. I think fair enough don't pay for more run of the mill woods but if it's something special I reckon its worth paying for otherwise there's no incentive for the person who owns the tree in a field/wood to let you have it. I did 1 and half days felling for a farmer a couple of months ago and in return asked for a burr oak on its last legs - burr all round bulging out to 3 foot. Probably around 14 foot long. I also felled it and cut it up how I wanted but the farmer dropped it round to my yard. But if I'd of had to bring a trailer round I would have. So effectively I paid £250-00 for it. But the way I look at it is one table of this will be worth £600+. Also I reckon I'll be able to sell a third of it when dry for £250. And also with wood it depends if you have an easy way of extracting it yourself....
