  1. So that makes it allright to have no PPE or training then. The later quote to the effect that accidents are less common than expected is testament to the style of long term father to son training , mental and physical aptitude of the rural worker and awareness of the result of an accident ( disability = no pay = hungry family ) Why we persist in training methods with wannabe woodsmen who have a 1 week ticket before being let loose is beyond me. Great pics though.
  2. and the track platform is from dial a digger in Sway.
  3. nearly 20 years ago I used to drive my bosses toyota pickupjust like that one ,6cyl petrol smooth as silk. mpg made range rovers look efficient though.
  4. Mine are 10 years old and all I did was change the pads and keep em sharp. Unless your racing up trees the weight is less important than comfort and fit.
  5. ...and prices will rise but accidents will still occur.
  6. yea, when was the last time you saw some arbo ponce footlock into a leylandii. actually when have you ever seen an arboponce in a leylanii
  7. Not all chainsaw injuries are survivable . http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1034901/Man-cuts-head-chainsaw-flat-earmarked-bulldozed-developers.html
  8. when you see that you know yous smokin tooo much.
  9. as much as i hate the yellow book , it still is the benchmark advertising tool. I had a guy call last week and state my advert stood out and looked pro so he wanted a quote. ( my ad is light blue and white, not green like all the others, so it stands out quite a bit.)
  10. Thats not a good piece of advice. If you cool fast you will feel refreshed and drink less, you need to have plenty of fluids available its better to have 1 litre too much and sweat/pee loads than have 1 litre too little and become fuzzy. I put a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar in 1 or 2 litres of water to taste. Its a cheap isotonic drink.
  11. wait long enough and one closer to home will show up.
  12. we are all amateurs in our own ways if we pick and choose between the rules and regulations that we follow. I carry a first aid kit c/c wound dressing but no whistle , foam and as for paper risk assessments....
  13. That is a fine motor, shame I'm even further away than surrey.
  14. According to industry standards we should carry a personal firstaid kit ( item 13) http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/afag401.pdf just for fun. How we where injured or killed as an industry grouping. HSE put arb forestry and agriculture in one set of statistics but the percentages are oddly interesting. contact with machinery is a tiny ammount in the fatalities and on a par with livestock fatalities. http://www.hse.gov.uk/agriculture/hsagriculture.htm remember don't drive to work and reduce your fisk by a huge ammount.
  15. Now this is what I call logging. This was a big Oak, each disc is cut into 18 -20 pieces so we can lift them on the splitter. The saw is a 372 has a 20" bar. My crane struggled to pick up the discs as they where too large in diameter. I cut notches in the edges to allow the grapple to bite.
  16. OH MY the things we do for money. I mean wearing the Freddie Mercury T-shirt.
  17. I suspect that the good Lord looked down from heaven and saw that the workers where doing such a nasty job on consecrated ground that he struck them down with a plague or lightning bolt.

    sweet fa

I became self employed because of the last depression( there where no jobs). Business was fine. I went places and got plenty of work. Just as before I have few staff, kit that is paid for and a good name. This time however I have a wife and home and family. No more paying £35 quid a week to my mum. I shall plod on doing what we do best and give good service for sensible money.
  19. "can you just jobs start at £15 " I reply.
  20. http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/cbaresrep/pdf/034/03413001.pdf may be of interest
  21. yeah but you didnt topreducethat one.
  22. To which I replied "no mrs they have a petrol engine" old bag answers " does it have its own electric generator then."
  23. don't forget to jack up the axle well on one side only or the oil stains on the drive will cause wife induced earache.
  24. yeah what he said too. here's one I did earlier,(about10 years, I'm just the mush up the tree) the cavity in the butt was big enough to stand a 12 year old kid in, and the barn behind was an office and learing centre. ( have you ever moved a barn ?)
  25. when that does not work the canny scot will blame us for eating too much , well there are lots of obese people i suppose.
