  1. Ha, Coutts&co is for paupers , I have a private client who give me cheques marked "The Bank of England". They are plain white,no pictures or colour. ( i think he was employed by them)
  2. I looked at a job on friday that involves the removal of a tree near a building that is home to many bats . The warden told me that bats living in trees rarely stay for more than a few days before they move to a different tree ( travellers of the bat world it seems) A tree that has no bats on inspection may have residents a week later when you fell it and also the reverse applies and they may have moved on when you think they are there. Its a tricky one.
  3. I like cats too but they make me sneeze too much so I cant have one to love. I run a business and I dont do free tree work and call the paper for a story. Why is that any different. ( actually I did have a story printed after a tree fell on a house on a Sunday morning , but that was a payer too)
  4. If your new to this then 1 acre a day is optomistic. If the client was to mark the trees (or a sample )to be retained then it may be easier for you to visualise. If you ask the owners too many dumb questions they may think you have nebver done this before and ask elsewhere. Find a friendly forestry contractor to price it for you and add a commission.
  5. I've had trees with well over the 5 cubic metre limit and still had them down. I would rather ask the local tree officer if there is a TPO or conservation order in place as they are far more likely to prosecute.
  6. Burn any wood if your cold it will do. Most people do not run their woodburners hot enough. Living in insulated boxes they have a tiny glow for effect. They need to turn up the burn and leave the windows open a bit. Hotter flue temperatures reduce the condensation of tar and its blown into the atmosphere. I always put a percentage of softwood in a load, just so they can light the fire or get it hot quickly if they want to. ( also 95% of customers cant tell between spruce willow ash or oak)
  7. Do you do free tree work? or for the wood maybe?
  8. Should any of you get or read Forestry Journal (FMJ) then you would hardly have failed to notice the large articles on the Chainsaw training issue that are being published each month. HSE, trainers and contractors all having their say in at least 2 A4 pages of print is big news in the Forest and Arb industries.
  9. Last week in the evening I had a friend of a friend call about a cat up a tree(his tree neighbours cat). It was 3 mins drive away so I agreed to rescue said cat. 10 minutes up an Oak and down with "Misty" 40 quids. Job done. This morning , old boy owner of the cat arrives , "Thanks" and a bottle of wine , then Its can I have a reciept for the Cats rescue charity who actually own the cat. Errr, yes but you have to pay the Vat which is £ 7.00 as I thought the £ 40 was a gift from a friend. Silly old man got a little funny as they do. What is wrong with people, at weekends and dusk I have better things to do with my time than rescue cats . I told him that I would charge double next time as I what I had done was for a friend. Whats your views on this arbo-chums.
  10. come back with my: 262xp blower 372xp 141
  11. Not the end of the world. My old 084 had tyre marks over the top when I drove the tranny over it. I even had to back up a bit cos it wouldnt drive over it first time. I thought it was a log under the wheel.
  12. I've cocked up on pricing lots of jobs, but I've won on more. I wouldn't ask for more when i'm loosing and I wouldn't give it back when I'm winning. (Help I've just priced a £48,000 job , I hope my sums are right. )
  13. aw i just spent the afternoon decorating and managed 65 randomised tracks on my ipood in one go. only about 92% left to listen too.
  14. yay forget the rabbit food... ...and hit the toast and marmalade x 4 or 6 , coffee x 2, cadburys x1, eccles cakes x4
  15. I cut my left hand up a tree with a 200T about 10 years ago. pulled the saw out of an awkward one hand reaching cut. Passed rotating (decellerating, no throttle )chain over back of left hand. lots of blood. lots of stitches. Wearing a LH glove would have prevented this. I now wear chainsaw gloves in the tree when I think a lot of cut abnd chuck is gonna happen.
  16. hey , no racist stuff ok .
  17. Its not surprising to me , round here tpo's come in many varieties. single tree, groups, woods, boundary only or blanket. Front or back gardens no diffreence. What is strange is the patchwork quilt effect where some properties are covered to the max and next door a beautiful tree is ignored.
  18. I think I'm gonna start charging for tpo applications rather than as part of the service. Then give a discount on the work when I get it.
  19. I hate dull files , new ones, they cost a quid. When you charge big money for a fell or prune job add on a pound for a new file. One new file a week will do most people.
  20. reminds me of this occurrence http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sussex/7644404.stm
  21. second that but also remember.... you need a sharp file to make a sharp chain. buy lots of new ones , do not use a worn rusty opject found on the floor of the van.
  22. nope.
  23. bbc iplayer virgin? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dndnn/b00dndn6/
  24. I had a nice letter from my TO gang and as far as i understand its an app ap. ok.
  25. but not a cushy lifestyle choice. better than being a banker though.
